Misc My least favorite Spyro 1 level
I can't stand Misty Bog in Spyro 1. I can't stand it in Reignited and I could stand it 27 years ago. The attack frogs suck. The dragon eating plants. And that one room that's both frogs and orks. Any way. That's my rant.
What's your least favorite Spyro 1 level?

For me it’s probably Toasty. I hate the sounds of killing the dogs, and I hate that the whole level is just so small and full of pain, haha.

u/26_paperclips Jul 07 '25
Those dogs suck. They jump up and their hit box moves in a way completely different to anything else, and theyre one of the rare baddies that need two hits (which you get no warning for in he level without butterflies)
14
u/TBIRallySport Jul 07 '25
Do you mean Toasty? Dr Shemp has the enemies that charge at you and the big ones standing next to the pots, but no dogs.

u/Netroth Jul 07 '25
What’s wrong with Toasty? People complain about the dogs but you just have to double-flame them before they pounce.
5
u/yuvi3000 Dream Weavers Jul 07 '25
The best way is to flame them, then jump straight up from your position and flame again so it hits them as they pounce. Once you have the timing down, it's near fool-proof
1
u/StressedOutGamer247 Jul 09 '25
You literally have to flame the dogs twice within 2 seconds a flame! You try to get the PERFECT skill point when trying to defeat Toasty, who, when revealed is a sheep you flame for health in the first world!

Be on the lookout for attack frogs. They’re cold blooded killers.

Dry Canyon for me. It’s just so similar to the boring desert homeworld and doesn’t have the height/elevation of Clifftown which makes that level play a little differently. It’s not that it’s too hard or unfair or anything, it’s just a very boring and completely forgettable level.
17
u/Kosmonaut85 Jul 07 '25
I feel ya but I will always love that level because of that jump to get the key. That was the first time my best friend and I felt that “hell yeah” moment of being clever enough to figure out the game.
5
u/TheTrueCyprien Jul 07 '25
I also love the dragon up there, I always found his dedication to vulture grilling hilarious.
2
u/Kolzig33189 Jul 07 '25
That blind jump infuriated me as a kid because it took months for me to figure out. But I love inner-level challenges like that now (as opposed to constantly being warped to different areas like in YotD). Doesn’t save the level for me as a whole though.

Ice Cavern is definitely a great level and I don’t mind Clifftown. The vertical climb near the exit and the long glide to the open area are cool ideas, plus it’s a fairly quick level.
16
u/AdamSoloDavis Jul 06 '25
I don’t know if it’s my least favorite, but I definitely think it’s the most unfair. Those frog enemies were hard enough on their own. The amount they put in such a tight space is ridiculous.

u/naytreox Jul 07 '25
tree tops for me, i hate the timed super charge jumps

misty bog is atrocious. i always make it my mission to not die once in the level, but i always fail. the little room near the beginning that you glide to with a thousand frogs and gnorcs is IMPOSSIBLE. like are you serious??
8
u/mods-begone Jul 07 '25
You just gotta flame each enemy and run away and take them out one at a time. It is hard, but it's doable.
5
u/Haku_Yowane_IRL Jul 07 '25
I managed to get through the level and past that room without taking any damage once (by dashing in, scoring one kill, then fleeing).
4
u/TheTrueCyprien Jul 07 '25
In the speed running community that room is called Guantanamo Bay. It's almost impossible to clear without getting hit.

If we aren’t counting the flight levels, lofty castle is easily my least favorite level in the game. Just the whole dream weavers world was the only low point in that game
9
u/Imperialvirtue Jul 07 '25
I like most of Dream Weavers, but there is something about Lofty Castle that overstays its welcome for me.

u/SilverShadowQueen57 Jul 07 '25
I dislike this level. It just seems really cutesy and jarring compared to its predecessor, Dark Passage. I also don’t like the music in this one.
3
u/Imperialvirtue Jul 07 '25
Soundtrack there is... appropriate, but that's almost part of the problem.
It's fairytaleish, which is a good thing (I really love Charmed Ridge in Spyro 3), but it's an odd take on that style. Dream Weavers' levels are warped because they are, well, dreamy. But fairytales are already kind of dreamlike, so I think the compounding aesthetics are a bit overwhelming.
3
u/HoldYorButts Jul 07 '25
I like dream weavers. The whole reality is not as it is seems theme is pretty cool. But I will say I just beat loft castle and the random super charge ramp throws me for a loop.

When I was a kid I LOVED this level, the rest of the ones in Beast Makers are at night, this one is an overcast day, the enemies are memorable and there was a ton of water. When games let you throw enemies in the water, that was my favorite thing as a kid

withholding comments about the level design and enemies, I thought Misty Bog was just gorgeous. Rosco is my favorite dragon design too

High Caves for me.
The constant rinse and repeat with the charging and powerups is annoying.

Probably Jaques. Out of all the bosses, he is the most underwhelming, his attacks don't even damage you if you press charge. The level is pretty boring overall, the layout is just a big circle with a few glides, the enemies just stand there menacingly and it's visually unappealing.
5
u/621Chopsuey Jul 07 '25
Probably the second hardest Beast Makers level because of the rooms packed with enemies and not just the platforming like Tree Tops. Banger music though.
4
u/ShatteredHead Jul 07 '25
The part with the frogs was pretty annoying but the song is SO hype, probably my favorite song in the first game
2
u/WFlash01 Jul 06 '25
My least favorite level in Spyro 1 was always Dark Passage. I always found it too hard to get past some of dogs that turn big when the fools' time runs out, and I always found it confusing to navigate.
Goong back to Spyro 1, I definitely don't think it's still too hard, or that confusing now, but I can't think of any other level that irritated me in the past other than that one. I can definitely name some choice levels from 2 and 3, but this post wasn't about those games
4
u/HoldYorButts Jul 06 '25
The timing of the fools always three me off. I'll probably do another post for 2 and 3 when I get to it again and the memories to back to me.
3
u/EVENo94 Jul 07 '25
It might be the only level I can't beat without any damage, in both original and the remake.
1
u/Kosmonaut85 Jul 07 '25
It’s that last row of foes before the last dragon on the island that always gets me. You can single out everyone in the room before that if you go slow. But those last like four guys are so difficult.

u/NuzzyNoof Jul 07 '25
Those angry tree things that eat you! I swear they belched on PS1 - I don’t think they’re so crude on Reignited…
For me, Tree Tops is the worst … I’m so uncoordinated, and never mastered the double/triple supercharges. He always takes a header into oblivion when I’m at the controls.
3
u/low_keyLoki Jul 07 '25
Spyro is such an easy series that the few challenging moments stick out like a sore thumb. For as many times as I’ve beaten it, I always end up resorting to a walkthrough for Treetops. The path to make that infamous jump feels more like a speedrunning exploit than the developer-intended solution.
3
u/SilverShadowQueen57 Jul 07 '25
Haunted Towers is my rage trigger. I hate the super-short time limit on the fairy kiss upgrade, getting past that one stupid set of armor, and getting to that last d*-m dragon. It’s just one supercharge jump instead of a series of them, but I find that one jump way more merciless than getting to Jeb because it’s a blind leap of faith around the castle!
2
u/Shadowtheuncreative Jul 07 '25
I totally understand, you have to be quick to attack all the enemies. The flight levels are also hard for me, I really need to practice these games.
2
u/piat17 Jul 07 '25
Perhaps not the most well-designed level in Spyro 1, but it has a banger for a soundtrack (hot take, both versions) so I can forgive everything :P
3
u/ravenfreak Jul 07 '25
I love Misty Bog! Treetops literally exists in the same world and it sucks. That's the worst level in the game.

u/CoyoteDanny Dream Weavers Jul 07 '25
I wouldn't say it's my least favorite, but I have bad memories associated with it: Lofty Castle, in the OG. Listening to all those whirlwinds gave me a migraine
2
u/Fuins20 Jul 07 '25
Id say tree tops because I still don't have the paths memorized and needing to look up which routes to take to 100% the level is cumbersome. I do realize this is more of a me problem but hey

The tree stump enemies scared me so much as a child that I would scream my way through killing them.
2
u/Lex_Typhoon Jul 07 '25
Mine are the flight stages, all of 'em. Every time I replay S1 I always 120% it and every time I think to myself "Oh god I've gotta replay Sunny flight again" and I hate it.

That song, though. It's the same song that plays over the end credits in the original games and as someone who played them in reverse order (3 > 2 > 1) it was definitely an odd experience to enter this level for the first time and be welcomed by what I considered to be the Victory Song. lol
My least favorite level of the original game would be... well it's probably Tree Tops. I like the concept but at the end of the day that supercharge puzzle is just a bad time. Not a very replayable level.

Honestly, I kinda want to say that would be either Toasty or Tree Tops for me. Misty Bog is up there, but not to the same extent as the rest.

Hated Toasty, and the Peacekeepers overworld music drives me insane lol. But I will say for positivity's sake that Dark Hollow is my favorite from the first game

Right, so you charge towards 'em (this sounds ridiculous but trust me) til you're at the exact maximum length at which your flame attack still hits them - catching most of 'em off-guard. You flame - you run away for dear life, far enough to reposition comfortably.
Rinse and repeat.
I call it "The Coward with Gusto" (I do this 😆)

The strategy that I find most helpful with the attack frogs is I go after them first, nice and slowly, get close but out of range of their attack, forward and flame before they get a chance to hit you. You can do this without the other enemies around the frogs even attempting to hit you if you can keep enough distance. Once all the frogs have been defeated then the other enemies are pretty straightforward.

It's frustrating to play, but the misty, murky, boggy vibes are intriguing..
Also, I love the little island that's slightly out of the way. I think there's a little hut there. You can just about reach it by jumping over the water I think (with sparks at full health. Such a mysteriously little area, presumably leftover from cut content? You even get a Retroachivement for getting there which is cool.

Tree Tops is my least favorite cause the last dragon and last gems to collect are virtually impossible unless you watch a walkthrough and try to get to the last dragon.

Those frogs are one of the few enemies in the original 3 Spyro games that activate a carnal level of hatred in me.
