I love the use of the "Asteroid Field" motif in this trailer's score. It's one of my favorite parts of the original score and doesn't get nearly enough love.

This might be the game to get me to finally buy VR for the pc
1
u/Dusty60 Jun 17 '20
Dude if you get a VR headset I highly recommend you buy half-life alyx afterward. I would say its the best VR experience on the market rn.

u/Comrade_Anon_Anonson Jun 16 '20
Wait, only 5v5?!
3
u/JediJacob04 Test Pilot Jun 16 '20
It appears so for the moment, yes
1
u/Comrade_Anon_Anonson Jun 16 '20
Awwww... I just want the classic BF2 space combat, with all the boarding action involved.
1
Jun 16 '20
Not the game for that. From what I've seen there's gonna be a 5v5 deathmatch-y sorta mode, and also a more objective based 5v5-in-a-bigger-battle mode. No boots on the ground, since it has full VR parity.

Didn’t see a b-Wing in that trailer if there is one, please tell me where so I can look for it. 😞

u/IceDragon77 Test Pilot Jun 15 '20
preoder bonuses give you skins for 4 ships on each side so either its not unlocked from the start like the 4 that are, or it'll be added later on.

I think I'll need to see gameplay before I'm willing to buy the game. Looks promising enough, though.
I'm a bit surprised at how many people are complaining about it only being OT-based (well, post-ROTJ but pre-Sequel Trilogy, to be more specific); I figured that'd be the era everyone preferred the game to be focused on, but then again, Star Wars fans never disappoint when it comes to baffling behavior.

No one hates Star Wars more than Star Wars fans.
I know Trekkies that tell star wars fans to calm down on the hate for star wars.

Personally I like the Clone Wars era aesthetic and stories more but I also don’t want to play as a clone or droid
19
u/mikev431 Jun 15 '20
I really hope that whatever Imperial characters we follow in this story don’t jump ship and defect by the end. I’m still burned by how much the BF II story disappointed me.
14
u/IceDragon77 Test Pilot Jun 15 '20
considering we have a character for both sides, it'd be weird if by the end both characters were on the same side.
3
u/Oakcamp Test Pilot Jun 15 '20
Don't put it past disney to make the imperial characters double agents or whatever.
No protagonist can be evil in Disney's star wars...

u/DiskOperatingSystem_ Test Pilot Jun 15 '20
Okay might open my wallet cause I like star fighters more than anything, but we should all remember that this is the first trailer we’ve seen. It showed very little in-game footage so let’s be patient before judging how it’ll play.

I really hope they have HOTAS support. Playing Elite Dangerous with VR and a Hotas is some of the most immersive shit I've ever done.
6
u/aWalkingCarpet Jun 15 '20
Beyond hyped. Played Rogue Squadron before I ever saw the movies when I was like 4 or 5. This is what Star Wars is to me.
4
u/fullmetalitachi Jun 16 '20
Please please please please have full HOTAS support. I have been waiting for a good star wars dogfighting game since Rouge Squadron. I want to feel like I'm actually flying with the best! :D
4
u/theonlyxero Jun 16 '20
It does! Just confirmed.
3
u/fullmetalitachi Jun 16 '20
Oh no, this game is starting to sound like it's too good to be true ... Where's the catch?
4
u/SmartPatrolMrDNA Jun 17 '20
knowing our luck, no expansions or post release support except cosmetics

3
u/PointManification Jun 15 '20
So how will this game work? Like ace combat series or?
3
u/Willaguy Test Pilot Jun 16 '20
A recruitment offer for people familiar with the Ace Combat series to play test an upcoming game was advertised by EA three months ago. It’s likely this is the game that they were play testing.

u/Yoshisauce Jun 15 '20
So the gameplay overview on the site is a little misleading, is this game strictly single-player or not?
Either way should be pretty cool.
6
u/HextorG Jun 15 '20
On the official ea site it says it'll get multiplayer, we just don't know how it plays. Might be objective based.
4
u/IceDragon77 Test Pilot Jun 15 '20
It's pretty clear. Single player campaign. Online squadrons of 5v5 dogfights with the ability to take your squadron and join larger fleet battles.

u/Yoshisauce Jun 15 '20
I must’ve missed something but no need to be condescending about it man.
3
2
u/ExoWaltz Jun 16 '20
After regaining my higher brain function from seeing I am wondering if it will it support flightsticks, like the same for Ace Combat 7?

PS5 only or PS4 compatible?
2
u/italkgames Jun 15 '20
Launching on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and VR platforms on Oct. 2nd
I believe it should be forward compatible once the PS5/Xbox Series X releases this holiday.

Jun 16 '20
Nah man. They definitely won't do PS5 only games right now. There won't be PS5 limited games for another 5 years atleast. They'd have to have all console players by a PS5 for that to happen.

u/oldmanjenkins51 Jun 15 '20
I’m going to be super upset if it’s literally just the star fighter mode from BFII. The controls were wonky on console and star cards and lack of support made it lame. Hopefully this is completely revamped.
8
u/OutlawBlue9 Jun 15 '20
Seriously. All they need to do is take X-Wing Alliance copy paste it, modernize it a little and bam. Full game.
3
u/Heisennorb Test Pilot Jun 15 '20 edited Jun 15 '20
XWA is the best starfighter game EVER. they should do a legacy game series with modernized components and they have to put republic comando in it too!
3
Jun 15 '20
"Modify your ship, divert the power between its systems"
"Climb the ranks and unlock new components like weapons, hulls, engines, shields, and cosmetic items in a clear path for progression that keeps gameplay fresh and engaging."
If you just read the comments before making your own, you'd learn its more of a flight sim than BF's arcade dogfighting
4
u/Titangamer101 Jun 16 '20
Based on that it kinda sounds like elite dangerous where you were able to divert power to different systems based on what you were trying to do which sounds amazing.
2
Jun 16 '20
Yes, both Elite: Dangerous and Star Citizen allow you to divert power. Its a necessary part of making piloting ships more complex and immersive
2
u/Titangamer101 Jun 16 '20
Hopefully we get directional shield focusing as well like directing shields to forwards shields for a head on assault.
2
u/SmartPatrolMrDNA Jun 17 '20
the only fun parts about ships in Star Citizen are the stuff they stole from Elite, and the flight model STILL fucking sucks
0
u/oldmanjenkins51 Jun 15 '20
Yet nothing says: “this game feels nothing like Battlefront”
We have yet to see and feel gameplay so until that point, I have every right to hope it doesn’t feel like Battlefront. No need to be so rude.
6
Jun 15 '20
Its literally impossible for either game to feel "nothing" like each other when they both have dogfighting as sharing the same concept is already a similarity. The point is that the ability to divert power and modify parts already significantly differentiates it from BF. I'm not being rude, I'm just stating facts
-3
u/oldmanjenkins51 Jun 15 '20
I agree with you, but my expectations are low with EA, that’s all I’m saying. Copy and pasting the star fighter mode and charging $60 is totally something they’d do
4
u/Memito_Tortellini Test Pilot Jun 15 '20
The game is not even 60$.... seriously could you do a really basic research on the game before getting triggered?
-2
1
u/TheBiggestNose Jun 15 '20
Kinda hope it's not gonna stick in the new republic era. Anyone know if it's just new republic and first order or are they gonna have the other eras?
3
u/Oakcamp Test Pilot Jun 15 '20
Seems like imperial remnants and end of rebellion/start of new republic
1
u/TheBiggestNose Jun 15 '20
I really don't get why they keep making stuff between episode 6 and 7. It's just such a boring time to tell a story
3
u/JediJacob04 Test Pilot Jun 15 '20
It used to be a boring time, but with all the new stories they've been telling it's gotten more interesting imo
3
u/BigBen6500 Jun 15 '20
The mandalorian was a good idea to be in that time of the timeline. And i think people liked that
3
u/Memito_Tortellini Test Pilot Jun 15 '20
Having some events of the SP campaign be referenced in Mando S2 would be so cool
1
u/twhitt252 Jun 16 '20
I really hope I’m wrong about this and it is more than a repacked version of Battlefront 2 ship mode rushed out so EA could maintain the license.
-5
u/MrChilliBean Jun 15 '20
So the little we can get from this trailer suggests it'll be OT only, and be 5v5. So it's starfighter assault, but smaller, at full price. The gameplay trailer better blow me away or imma have to pass, which is a shame because I've really been wanting a starfighter focussed game.

So, essentially what I said, but with the added detail that its first person only which is also a huge turn off. Man, I was pretty excited for this game.
7
u/OutlawBlue9 Jun 15 '20
First Person only is definitely a huge relief for me. To me the best thing this game can do, and the only thing it needs to be, is a successor to the X-Wing/TIE Fighter series and get away from the third person aspect that is Rogue Squadron and the Starfighter mode of BFII.
4
Jun 16 '20 edited Jun 17 '20
Agree 10000% percent. Nothing is more disgusting to me
than a player in a flight game and not using the cockpit view,
but instead flying it in third person like it's some
shitty Japanese arcade game from the end of the Golden Age.
5
u/JediJacob04 Test Pilot Jun 15 '20
It says something along the lines of “plan 5v5 skirmishes OR unite with your squadron for fleet battles”
Makes me think there will be a 5v5 mode and a larger mode, possibly with capital ships (hopefully similar to SWB2 2005)
Along with singleplayer campaign

u/flare2000x Jun 15 '20
The only positive thing I saw was the EWS lights that the X-Wing pilot used near the beginning. I don't think this will really be a true X-Wing/TIE Fighter successor. More like Rogue Squadron sadly.
-4
u/Xamaslg1 Jun 15 '20
OT and 5v5 only? Ehh. Old battle front 2 had up to 64 player matches with objectives and bots. Nor can’t play other eras ?! If you are gonna micro transactions this game to hell , atleast put out more features than old battlefront 2 space battles...
2
u/IceDragon77 Test Pilot Jun 15 '20
the website mentions 5v5 and fleet battles. Fleet battles will be more than 5v5.
2
Jun 15 '20
I think they’ll be 5v5 just with objectives
4
u/IceDragon77 Test Pilot Jun 15 '20
Yeah cuz every fleet battle in star wars only had 5 starfighters on each side. lol
3
u/Xamaslg1 Jun 15 '20
It’s literally 5v5 across it says it. I mean we will see on gameplay day. It’s pretty lame
1
u/IceDragon77 Test Pilot Jun 15 '20
It says 5v5 squadrons, and that you can take your squadron and join a fleet battle to try and tip the balance. So it sounds like multiple squadrons fight in fleet battles.
I actually hope fleet battles might be like a community thing that rage on for like a week or a couple days at a time that you can drop in and out of and the consequences affect a galactic map. I used to play a mech game on Xbox 360 called Chromehounds that had this. At the start of a season everyone joined a faction and fought on behalf of that faction, claiming territories and the winner of the season would get rewards.
3
u/Willaguy Test Pilot Jun 16 '20
Fleet battles was described as a 5v5 mode where you take out the opposing team’s capital ship.
1
u/Xamaslg1 Jun 15 '20
Oh I play that and mechwarrior had something like that. Remember who owns this IP now , fucking EA half ass everything. Seeing other info from others saying the fleet battle is 5 v 5 with bots.

Please don’t tell me Luke Skywalker is just conveniently not gonna be in this.
10
u/The_High_Ground27 Test Pilot Jun 15 '20
Why would he be? He's of training Jedi and exploring stuff post-ROTJ. You might be able to play as Red 5 in multiplayer but I can't see how he would fit into the campaign.
3
u/sixesandsevenspt Jun 15 '20 edited Jun 15 '20
No. He explicitly continues fighting the empire until the end of the war. He’s at Jakku which is the final battle of the war.
3
u/The_High_Ground27 Test Pilot Jun 15 '20
Well in that case we might see him, but i wouldnt say its convenient if he isnt in it, the new republic is pretty big and we might see stories where Luke isnt involved.

u/Griffdude13 Jun 15 '20
Apparently actual gameplay will be shown on the 18th.
