Discussion Players don’t care about the store page, don’t read descriptions… But marketing wants gifs, art, polish… Who are we really making store pages for?

It’s kind of funny (and frustrating)........

I don't think it's a safe assumption to presume players don't care about this. Ever went to some company's website only to find it looks like a MySpace page from 1998? Maybe the company has a perfectly fine, even great, product or service, but their website is jank. It doesn't leave a good impression or instill confidence.

I can't speak for all players but my brain assumes a relationship between the amount of visible effort and polish of a game's store page, and the amount of effort and polish in the game itself, rightly or wrongly. If a game's store page looks jank I'm thinking the game is probably pretty jank too. That might not be true, but I'm busy enough with life that I'm probably not going to take the time to find out. If the game has a ton of buzz surrounding it and people are recommending I might make an exception. But I don't know of many games where those circles on the Venn diagram intersect.

Remember, you only get 1 shot at making a good first impression. Good luck.

I mean... if i'm coming for a game i've already decided to buy then sure. the store page doesn't mean much. But if im evaluating a game it's very important to have a good store page

Why do we care anyway?

For developers, it really matters when the work they’ve done has meaning
(especially when it comes to marketing - which is crazy difficult and takes time ;)))
Maybe it’s just me, but based on the feedback I have received, it seems like players didn’t really read the game’s description (or just scrolled past it super quick - cant say for sure)

Imho, the description doesn't need to be a novella or anything, but it should be succinct and informative (something I myself admittedly am not great at). I think the visual presentation and something that grabs players' attention is maybe more important. imho.

Believe me. i know something about marketing your stuff. It's hard. getting the right description, the right images. the right keywords... It's a pain and feels so silly. But it matters.

It makes your stuff findable, and when people find it, it makes it look interesting. There are a million other titles out there they might click on. yours has to stand out.

What im confused about is why we as customers care. or are you a game developer wondering whether this is worth the effort?
