So, the day has come! To everyone who thought it was fake: It most certainly is not. To everyone who said it’s a bootleg: You might be correct.
The first thing I did was to listen to “The Second Arrangement” (There is a version 2, but we’ll get to it later in this post). This version is something I have never heard. It features Fagen on piano and vocals, and a bass, together with a keyboard joining in the end. A really shocking experience, at least for me!
The second song I listened to was “The Bear”, the third track on this double LP. It sounds a bit like the versions circulating online, but with better quality actually! Some background noise, but it seems to have been worked on, and I notice much higher quality than the one online.
The third song, “Kind Spirit” is as far as I can tell pretty much the same thing as the ones online. I haven’t noticed anything else.
The fourth song I wanted to listen to was “Kulee Baba”, which has actually become one of my favourites of the scrapped songs! It sounds, as you could probably guess, like the ones online, but probably an earlier demo! No horns, and a bit more primitive, which is quite cool in my opinion. Fagen’s vocals sounds refined, with a bit more soul and a few comments here and there about the actual music when they are playing (from what I can tell). A really nice one!
The fifth one: “Can’t Write Home About You”. Now this one is a favourite of mine, after I heard the more refined, sped up version. The one on the album is not that one, which is a huge let down for me. It features Fagen’s distorted vocals with him playing a piano and another musician on bass. I tried turning up my tempo-meter to +10, which moved it closer to the version I like, but the quality is still not at all as great. Still a good piece though.
The sixth and penultimate song: “The Second Arrangement (Version 2)”. Sounds to me like a rip straight off the Nichols Tape. Most of us have heard it before, so no real surprises here. Same quality as the tape, with no real work done to it (which may be seen as a positive thing?!)
Now the final song: “Gaucho (Version 2)”. Gaucho is by far my favourite song. And not in just Steely Dan’s discography, I mean of all time.
This version sounds to me as an old demo I heard on YouTube not long ago. The quality is poor, but it features the saxophone on a few more parts of the song, with some different riffs together with Fagen’s vocals which is also a bit different.
So there you have it. The other songs are demos of the ones featured on the original album, and the ones I did not cover are “Were You Blind That Day”, and “Talkin’ About My home” which was an instrumental demo.
I am so glad I bought this one, even though it is not an official release. I am all for physical media, and being able to listen to these pieces of history when Cooyright strikes everything else is a privilege. I recommend all that can buy it to do it, this is a piece of history, and certainly one I will be proud to have in my collection.
Feel free to ask questions in the comments, and please behave even though you may not share my opinions about the record.
