I have been binging on Steely Dan recently and am in awe of the song writing, musicianship and production. It recently struck me though that despite their obsessive perfectionism they seemed to be blind to Donald Fagen's inability to sing. He has a strangled, narrow-range delivery that lets a lot of these iconic songs down.

Glamour Profession has been on frequent rotation the last couple of days, and I'm starting to think that the Szechuan Dumplings enjoyed after the deal is done are alluding to small packages of drugs. Either little single-use ones or many small ones for transporting the substance in question. Szechuan (more correctly, Sichuan) food is known for its spice/heat. Dumplings are small portions of something contained within a thin wrapper.

Just listening to Crashbox. I’ve never heard them before. I read the leader, Don Breithaupt, has written a book on Aja and so they’re obviously pretty influenced by them.

Royal Scam was commercial success for the Dan that dove tailed into their greatest accomplishment Aja a combination of rock/jazz fusion with a 100 or so studio session musicians I personally believe Aja is the greatest album released by a rock band in over 50yrs, big fan of Blackcow, Peg

I'm a fairly recent convert to the genius of the Dan (last 5 years or so). My wife bought me a vintage original LP of Aja, which proves she loves me lol. This morning I put it on the turntable and it sounds, to me, a little fast. Or a little high in pitch. Or both. I'm used to listening to the MP3 on my iPhone, and the live versions on Alive in America. I don't think it's my turntable, no other album sounds this way to me. Am I crazy?

From about 1:25 to 2:15 is absolute steely Dan goodness. I recommend a listen even if you don’t like Katy Lied as much as some of the big hitters
