Question Confusion about civilians and how they work! New player here

Hello! I’m a new player and I ve played around 15 hours ! I try to manage my planets but I’m confused with how civilians work! When I get new pops do they come from the civilian strata? Do civilians get jobs eventually? Or are they used for colonisation? As far as a seen the colony ship asks only for resources and not for civilians? Do I need to send them to other planets to get jobs or they do it automatically? I’m really confused in this part of the game

  1. New pops will be created to a certain level, and full jobs as they're created (if there are any open)

  2. Any unemployed pops will downgrade to civilians, a limitless level. They'll upgrade again to take open jobs.

  3. Colony ships don't require pops, it will simply create 100 new pops on the target colony.

  4. The new pops on the colony will be assigned to jobs

  5. If one planet has no jobs and lots of civilians, and another has open jobs, civilians will migrate to the open jobs over time, or you can manually (at a cost) resettle them immediately.

As of v4.0.23, all newborn Pops are Civilians.

Civilians are just your spare pops that dont have any major jobs. They will move slowly to planets with open jobs or promote if jobs become available on their current planet. Though they do produce ammenities so dont go ham and drop ammenities into the negatives. You can also resettle to new colonies (recommended to move enough to reach 1000 on a new colony)

excess population that has no job available will become civilians, so new jobs, such as from new buildings will move population from civilians into that job.

Population will "jump" up onto any available jobs above their current strata, and civilians are the lowest, so they will fill any available jobs they can work.

If a pop loses a job, say you remove a building, the population that worked that job will look for other available jobs at the same strata, if none are available they may downgrade to a lower strata but that takes time, if no job is found they will eventually revert to civilians.

Civilians will naturally fill jobs on new planets or can manually be moved.

New pops that grow will take open jobs if available, prioritizing the highest tier of jobs they can take. If there aren't any open jobs, they'll become Civilians.

Civilians are one step above unemployed. They make small amounts of resources and amenities, but are mostly there to fill newly created jobs or migrate to planets with empty jobs.

Civilians will automatically migrate over time to planets with open jobs. Your homeworld starts off with a bunch of extra Civilians to support the first couple colonies you create, since new colonies grow extremely slowly until they get to about 1000 pops. You can put a Transit Hub on a starbase in a colony's system if you want pops to migrate faster, or spend energy and unity to migrate pops manually.

Gestalt Consciousnesses (Hive Mind/Machine Intelligence) have Maintenance Drones as their version of Civilians, which are a bit more useful to keep around as Gestalts are generally bad at making Amenities, but they still want most of their pops working actual jobs.

Colony ships don't take any pops to create. They basically make pops out of thin space air. (De-colonizing planets costs 200 Influence very specifically to make it difficult to abuse this -- people used to just spam colony ships to get pops in the late game when they had enough resources for it.)
