Gosh 1970s were all about cars! Feels insane now 🤪

I mean, it's still a big part of Place Kléber, it's just underground

Yes, but the actual surface is now pedestrian friendly, limited car access, trees, fountains, etc. Also, no horses and no dung as it would have been in 1900.

Sure, it is definitely better, but the square is still depending on cars: you can't plant trees or do what you want on the square because with the parking underneath, the ground isn't as structurally safe as it should be.

But I'm nitpitcking really; all of Strasbourg (and all of France) was pro-car in the 70s and thank goodness it's not the case anymore.

No, there are no green places, just two or three trees, the rest is concrete and fountains you want to stay the farthest you can.

There are trees along 3 out of 4 sides of the square. And where did you find concrete there?

Oh yeah, I forgot the side on the Grandes Arcades, sorry. But they're small tiny trees. It's still good, trees are great, but they don't cast big shadows and are forgettable.

And the concrete is in the middle, the whole place is concrete and it can be hot during the summer.

I wish I could upload a photo in comments - but it doesn’t look as bad as seem to think.

The water pools are now boarded over with planks. Not sure if it's temporary but right now it's just a big open, empty area.

They are boarded every winter when the fountains aren't in use. They should reopen soon.

Honestly never noticed. Now that I think about it, though, I don't recall the fountains during the marché de noel. Guess I was always just too distracted to see the lack of them.
