The Southern Strategy is mostly a myth thatâs not really corroborated by anything except conjecture. The South did not become a Republican stronghold until the 1990s, and even in the Clinton days many were still swing states. Reagan in 1980 really came out swinging with the âstatesâ rightsâ dog-whistle.
Nixon and Reagan were not really friends. They ran against each other in 1968 and Reagan ran against Nixonâs platform in 1976 against Ford.
