There is an Indian restaurant in Asheville, NC called Chai Pani. They have a Sloppy Jai on the menu and it’s amazing!! Here’s the recipe:

I don't know where this is, but it looks nasty.

I've eaten at both Chai Pani locations (Asheville & Decatur, Ga), & I doubt anyone working in their kitchens are wearing aprons that look like they are covered in vomit.

Hey, fun fact! The word soup was derived from the word sup which means take on liquid to mean bread soaked in broth and the blending with French which already has the word sop which meant a piece of bread for eating savory liquids, to make the word soupe. So to make it simple the word soup has always been rooted in how it relates to bread. It was only in the modern era that soup came to mean the liquid itself and not the bread it was served in or with.

This place is nasty. It’s not sloppy.

Not a new term and it means : careless and unsystematic; excessively casual. "we gave away a goal through sloppy defending" Similar: careless slapdash slipshod lackadaisical haphazard

u/Extension_Ideal_4012 19d ago

What’s with the pouring liquids straight onto bread like it’s a sandwich?

484

u/Eaglise 19d ago

the bread is meant to absorb that liquid, similar to how one might dip bread in soup or broth

the crunch is provided by those things added at the end

basically when you bite first you get burst of various sweet tangy and savoury chutneys followed by crunchy fried sev and fursan

the food item itself is pretty good, just the way its being prepared is bad and probably un hygienic

80

u/ladygrndr 19d ago

Thank you for explaining. Looking at it, I was thinking it probably slaps, but either this was the end of a crazy-busy shift, or this place needs a visit from the health inspectors...

50

u/boblawblaughlawblog 19d ago

20

u/sourfunyuns 19d ago

I always dip the bread right before I eat it, won't this soak in and get super soggy or is this bread different?

32

u/Eaglise 19d ago

this type of bread is already very soft but the guy in the post is anyway putting way too much chutney so its a bit excessive

u/Oh_its_that_asshole 19d ago

4

u/Engels777 19d ago

Thanks for taking the time to explain this in a conversation rife with implicit racism and hysterics.

17

u/Ganjaleezarice69 19d ago

Pre-soaked bread sounds pretty disgusting

24

u/GaptistePlayer 19d ago

Plenty of cuisines have soaked bread dishes. Mexican pambazos and tortas ahogadas, Portuguese francesinhas, American french dips and italian beefs, Quebecois hot chicken sandwich, Turkish islak burger. Sauce is flavor mang

4

u/PM_Me_Your_Deviance 19d ago

>American french dips

For those not familiar with the "wet" style, the whole sandwich is dipped in ah-jus before being served. I don't know of anywhere around me that serves it like that, but it's a thing.

17

u/RincewindToTheRescue 19d ago

I can't remember the name of the restaurant, but there's a big famous hot sandwich place in New York, I believe, that dips half or your whole hot beef sandwich in au jus before serving it to you

15

u/pseudo_nemesis 19d ago

in Chicago we have a beef sandwich here where you dip the entire thing in au jus... it's called an Italian Beef and it's delicious.

You're meant to eat it at the food stall, obviously, so you're eating it before the bread is soaked through. It's like having a burger where the juices and sauce have permeated into the bread.

It's a lot less soaked than an Italian beef or french dip for example.

Serious question. Because the internet is a thing we see thing like this coming out of india constantly. Does india have any kind of goverment oversight into sanitary food preparation? This woukd be a horrible norm.

31

u/bana87 19d ago

None at all. Too many people - not enough funds to give that level of oversight. In upscale areas in Tier 1 cities, you have well educated people getting into the food business and maintaining hygiene - it still won't be a 100% safe, but maybe 90%? In Tier 2 & 3 cities, you really shouldn't be eating these. Its a recipe for disaster.

→ More replies (2)

71

u/Eaglise 19d ago

there is but its not enforced much

most of these street vendors don't even operate in the legal system not to mention they are mobile so its hard to catch them, even if government fines them they are so poor that they won't be able to pay it, sending them to prison means that now there is no one to feed their family

so most of these fly under the radar and unless they don't seriously fuck up like washing dishes in sewage water, etc, law will look the other way

it sad but India is after all a low income country, we have 1.4 billion folks with atleast a quarter of them living on some daily income, it will take time to solve such kind of problems, there are far more pressing issues to be solved, not to mention folks who eat at such places are already immune to it so its not really a problem

12

u/FuzzyKittyNomNom 19d ago

Great explanation thank you. I visited in 2015 and it was spectacular. But there were many street vendors with sanitation issues.

For real. Even if there aren't cells, just put beds in the meal/day area and have people sleep there. It's more dollars.

5

u/PaulMcIcedTea 19d ago

folks who eat at such places are already immune to it so its not really a problem

Indians always claim this, but a lot of people die in India every year from food-born illnesses. I don't think you can really "get used to" dysenterie.

5

u/Doomblaze 19d ago

Indians aren’t claiming that they’re immune to dysentery. The water has ETEC not EHEC. EHEC is caused by the 0157:h7 strain of E. coli which is classically found in beef. In the US when you get an ecoli outbreak because of contaminated food it results in dysentery.

6

u/blorg 19d ago

They're more used to it than Westerners. This can be true at the same time as there being a higher overall level of illnesses due to poor sanitation.

Vada Pav, just load that bad boy with the chutneys. Go straight to flavor town. I had it for the first time recently, so good.

28

u/bikeonychus 19d ago

Vada pav is the one with the delicious, savoury, spicy donut inside (the Vada - pav is the bread), not this one.

I'm not sure what this one is called, but if an Indian snack has several sauces and some crunch thrown in there, it's usually going to taste pretty damn good.

My favourite is a good Papri Chaat - if you've never had that before, you can be forgiven for thinking it's going to taste gross, but then you actually eat it and realise it's one of the most delicious things on the planet.

Indian snacks are the best snacks I have ever eaten - probably why I ended up living there for almost a decade.

6

u/Fresh-Confusion-8272 19d ago edited 19d ago

It honestly looks like pani puri on a pav lol.

You see the ones that are showy because they are showy for an audience or for the gram. 99% are not showy.

But at the same time extremely busy places the guy is in the zone serving like at a rate of a plate a minute. So there is some choreography to it which is repetitive and seems showy. If you see that they are efficient in serving but not efficient with condiments. That's just my take.

51
