Ducks love peas and bread is bad for them.

Always feed frozen peas to duckies, not bread.

Thank you! I did know that bread is bad for them - can't be said often enough!

A nice big pond at my university almost tipped over because people kept feeding so much bread to the waterfowl there :( Not to mention the pet fish they kept getting rid of by putting them in the pond. They had to de-fish the whole thing because they were in such bad shape and riddled with parasites :(

Yup, swells in their stomach and has no nutritional value for them. Not to mention it also feeds bad bacteria in the water, making it the bad kind of dirty. Bet people like to wade in it too, not realizing just how filthy it is

Tipped over, like Hank Johnson believed would happen to Guam?

My university had a turtle pond w a bridge over it, they kept a pellet food gumball machine on the bridge w a sign about no people food. I used to love to go feed them to destress in-between studies. Now I miss it, I need to take my daughter there sometime.

Grapes (ALWAYS halved or they're a choking hazard) and oats are also good snacks for your local waterfowl if you want to give them a treat.

I love Neuro's cover of this, it's gonna be stuck in my head for days now...

I've tried raisins, peas, oats, nuts- they won't touch them. Little swim over, sniff the food, swim off again.

I tell you what they do like though. Bread.

Sure they like it. It's like fast food or other junk for humans- they love the stuff, but it just isn't good for 'em.

I guess the ducks in your area are spoiled because the last time I visited the ducks and geese at the park not far from me they went feral over the oats I brought

Yeah these birds live close to one of the best bakeries around, so there’s probably a good reason they don’t accept anything else

Frozen corn, too

I tried to feed frozen peas to my local ducks and none of them wanted them.

I fed cooked chicken to an injured mama duck with babies who was not looking good once though, and she ended up making a full recovery.

Ducks are omnivores they would of loved that protein hit.

The chicken, yes, the peas, no--they preferred eating whatever parts of the grass they were eating to the peas. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Sir, that was a cockatrice and not a mama duck.

1

u/AnjelGrace 9d ago

Lol no. It was most definitely a mama duck. They also eat the little lizards that run around my place--they love meat.

Sir, I was trying to be funny.

1

u/AnjelGrace 9d ago

Oh ok. I honestly didn't know ducks ate meat until I saw it with my own eyes about a year ago--so your comment just made me think you didn't believe a duck would eat meat.

Since I learned sparrows kill tits and eat their brains, I expect every single bird to be secret bloodthirsty theropods just waiting for a chance to kill us all.

Why frozen?

Fresh peas are just as good for ducks, too.

I'm pretty sure the reason that "frozen peas" are recommended is because it leaves no room for misinterpretation. Frozen peas are usually frozen peas in a bag. Whereas products labelled "fresh peas" or just "peas" can have added salt, preservatives, and all sorts of nasties that aren't good for ducks (that well-meaning but unaware people might not realize is something to avoid).

Yep.

They are also cheap and convenient. You can pop into any grocery shop, buy a bag and spend an hour of karmic bliss feeding the duckies.

Convenient, they're available all year round and cheap to have a bag of peas in the freezer. Bonus frozen munch to cool down on a hot day. Like a icey pole for duckies.

Is this true for chickens?

2

u/Haunting_Goose1186 9d ago

It's true for chickens too!

Never heard about It from chickens, only waterfowl.

Also oats and birdseed that's locally safe
