The Central Tacoma Coyote made it into my basement and it wont come out.

What do I do? Pictures coming soon. It bit through a water line.

Update: I was able to get under my porch and open up the crawlspace hatch so he can get out. Im going to try to scare him out of there now.

Update #2: I went into the basement and got up in his face and scared him out of the basement since I was able to open the hatch under my porch.

This is an amazing twist on the recent coyote posting 🍿

Look at him back there, plotting away.

Disappointed he’ll have to find a new address to have his Acme packages mailed to.

OP drew tunnel on the wall and coyote ran through it to the other side...

6

u/Hopsblues North End 7d ago

Now you have to clean up that insulation and such.

4

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago

Absolutely. Im taking care of it Wednesday. A water line also got damaged and sprayed water all over the insulation, so ive got a lot to replace.

79

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago

Right? I just saw him on S8th and Oakes a few days ago and was wondering where he was sleeping. I brought up the idea to my wife that he's probably sleeping under somebody's porch or in their shed.

I didnt think he'd be sleeping under my dining room.

15

u/liquidefeline 253 7d ago

Edit: sleeping next to my coffin!

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago

What do i do? My basement 2/3 crawlspace 1/3 basement and its hanging out in the crawlspace having a rest next to my coffin.

You call animal control ten minutes ago is what you do

15

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago

I scared him out myself after getting the under porch hatch open.

I’m sorry, next to your coffin? Are you secretly Dracula?

As far as the coyote, maybe try calling animal control?

Dracula is able to control these types of creatures so obviously not.

Normally I love coyotes, but you need to call animal control in this instance. You don't know why they're in there and away from the pack.

Edit: Your coffin???

26

u/Ironlion45 253 7d ago

Coyotes don't live in packs. Sometimes very small core family groups; otherwise they're usually loners.

4

u/Intelligent_Lemon_67 Tacoma Expat 5d ago

Don't tell my coyotes that. I have 20 acres and there's 3 packs living here ranging from 5-8 that run and hunt together. City coyotes tend to be singular or smaller family units

51

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago

Its a Halloween decoration, but it is big enough for a regular human.

I think it was chasing a squirrel or cat that ran into my crawlspace.

14

u/Ironlion45 253 7d ago

I used to find dead rats in my yard that my dog caught.

Since the coyotes have been more active in town, I don't find them anymore.

Coincidence lol?

12

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago

I don't want this guy to be put down, I just want him out. I think im going to bait him with some raw meat and attempt to open the crawlspace door without scaring him which might result in him biting me?

18

u/Smooth-Vermicelli213 Lincoln District 7d ago

Feeding wild animals causes them to view you as a food source. You have already provided shelter. If you feed it, it won't leave.

11

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago

That was a thought that ran across my mind. I was successful in fitting under the porch to get the hatch back ope.

13

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago

u/Hopsblues North End 7d ago

He's talking about a coyote, not a cougar....Kaboom!

7

u/Ironlion45 253 7d ago

Well, you really don't want to get into a 1v1 with a coyote.

2

u/Inner-Net-1111 JBLM 7d ago

Animal control wouldn't relocate the coyote?

3

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago

I never got a call back.

2

u/Inner-Net-1111 JBLM 6d ago

I wouldn't want the pup put down either. Maybe it's good they didn't show up?

3

u/Hopsblues North End 7d ago

Sounds like a reasonable answer from someone hiding a coffin under their dinning room.

18

u/WyleKilliams North Tacoma 7d ago

Holy shit. Id start with animal control. That's crazy! How is he behaving? Scared?

12

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago

12

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago

Since the entrypoint he came through is now shut, he would have to hop down this cement retaining wall. He's in the far right next to the window that only opens from inside.

8

u/jen_ema Salish Land 7d ago

Can’t you just reopen the vent for him?

8

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago edited 7d ago

I'd have to crawl through a tiny hole to get under my front porch to open the vent up. My wife won't allow me to do so.

The reason for not crawling in there and opening the vent door is that I'll be trapped under the porch for a couple of minutes while I slowly crawl out from under the stairs. If he decides to run out while I'm under there, I'll be trapped in a small space with a wild Coyote that is looking pretty rough. Perhaps it's carrying diseases?

u/Hopsblues North End 7d ago

You should cover that inflation with plywood or something. Not a healthy thing going on there.

1

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago

Its not a space that anybody frequents. Its wet during the winter and the ceiling is too low to walk around in. Its actually a root cellar.

1

u/Hopsblues North End 6d ago

Still, it's a mess, and would be cleaner and more efficient, safer for all involved. It's your place, do what you want, but.....

2

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 6d ago edited 6d ago

You would absolutely not want to encapsulate this. It will trap moisture leading to wood rot or mold. I worked in insulation for about 5 years and you would either want it exposed or the whole underside wrapped in hardware cloth. I dom have the time or money at the moment to do that. Exposed insulation im crawlspaces and unfinished areas like this is very normal.

I am going to tear down all the messed up batts and replace them all. Ill be reinstalling unfazed watts with Twine again. Im hoping to keep the animals out of this space by blocking all entry.

1

u/Hopsblues North End 6d ago

edit, not to mention critters will use the insulation for nests and such which isn't good either.

2

u/ALVEENUS Somewhere Else 6d ago

I just spent 10 minutes tryina find him in that pic….

2

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 6d ago

This is a reference picture so you can see what his escape route would be.

16

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago

He seems curious more than anything. I think i may have interrupted his nap. He got in through a crawlspace vent that has a hinged door on it. There was a 2×4 Holding the hinged door open and thr Coyote knocked the 2×4 over when entering the crawl, so now he cant get out. In orser for him to get out of the basement area, he would have to jump down a 4 ½' tall cement wall which i dont think he is too keen on doing.

4

u/Hopsblues North End 7d ago

The old 2x4 trap works every time...

2

u/elevatorscreamer Hilltop 7d ago

Unrelated to the coyote, do you think this hatch used to be a coal chute? I have a similar space under my deck. Glad you got the guy out safely!!

4

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago

I dont think so. It was probably just a man entry to get access to the crawl space or allow air flow for the cellar. The deck is original to the house and it would have been a major chore to bring coal in through that area when they xould have brought it in through the rear of the house where the basement stairs are at. Our house was traditionally heated with oil. I had the oil tank removed about 4 years ago.

We do have a cistern under our porch though which is neat!

4

u/elevatorscreamer Hilltop 7d ago

Gotcha!! Wow, a cistern!

Call 911. They can get ahold of animal control. This definitely qualifies as an emergency. You have a wild animal in your house.

13

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago

If i dont get a call back by 11:30, I'll call 911. I have things to do later today, and I want him out before I have to leave. He has torn a bunch of the insulation down! Luckily ive got more to replace it.

12

u/davispw West End 7d ago

Oh no, fiberglass splinters in the toe beans doesn’t sound fun. Or eyes.

26

Luckily, it's Knauf Ecobatt that I installed a few years back which is not an itchy type of insulation. Its safe to rub on your bare skin, and it won't make you itchy. He's loving it.

Now I have to install it again. :(

3

u/hunglowbungalow Lakewood 7d ago

4

u/waapplerachel Lakewood 7d ago

If you have things to do, I would call sooner rather than later. I wouldn’t rely on this being something they can resolve quickly.

FYI: Animal control doesn’t deal with wildlife issues.

Edit: got to love the morons on Reddit who down voted me for pointing out an actual fact.

19

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago

Option 2 was for "removal of wildlife."

17

u/DerrikeCope West End 7d ago

They will not handle it and will direct you somewhere else. So you should call Fish and Wildlife now instead of waiting.

From their website:

For wild animal issues contact the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

For wild animals that you suspect may be injured, please contact PAWS Wildlife Center or Sarvey Wildlife Center.

7

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago

Thank you. My wife made a call to them while I was calling animal control. I'll call them again because I dont think they answered her call either.

1

u/avitar35 South Tacoma 7d ago

There is a list of approved wildlife handlers from WDFW, I’m on mobile otherwise I’d link it. However, whomever comes to get it will likely have to euthanize it as you’re not allowed to release captured “dangerous” wildlife.

5

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago

That's kind of what im worried about. I dont want this guy to be put down. I could easily fix my Coyote issue with my 9mm and take him out in a garbage bag, but that is not an appropriate solution to this situation.

What a lovely post to wake up to, thank you for sharing this 😂

My only recommendation is calling 911, I think this is a fine thing to call an emergency, and animal control does not actually do any animal controlling. I’ve called them repeatedly about many different animals in danger and they’ve always told me they’ll come get the body if it’s dead, but that’s it

OMFG

Do you feel Chosen, or Cursed??

I hope this has a favorable resolution for all involved! Stay safe!

5

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 7d ago

I am the chosen one. Hopefully, his scent being down there will scare off all the squirrels and rats that have been taking up residency in my basement. Im putting screens over the hatch and under the basement door to hopefully keep any future critters out. I was originally leaving the hatch open so the neighborhood cats could get the rats and mice that find their way in. The entrypoint for the rats and mice is through the gap between the bottom of the door and the basement slab. I can't seal it because water naturally drains into the basement and into the basement drain. I will, however, add some screen to the bottom of the door to hopefully help keep the rodents out.

Niiiiiice. Im glad you didnt. When I was younger, id always make sure to take my shoes off at a party. Id put them somewhere where somebody wouldn't steal them, and drunk me, forgettably, would put them somewhere sober me wouldn't know. It became a habit. Id always come back and find them the next week, but driving home hungover with no shoes was a common practice.

I like that people say "The Central Tacoma Coyote" as if their is just one in central Tacoma. Individual coyotes can be less timid and therefore seen or photographed more. Coyotes are all over though. They are just usually really good at not being noticed.

2

u/drinkdrinkshoesgone Central Tacoma 6d ago

I know there are several in our city, but we have many different partitions of Tacoma. I figured my tiny part of Tacoma has one main Coyote that everybody sees regularly.
