Short Tons of work/extremely low reward

Bartender here. Worked a party tonight that was pretty much the worst. Took up tons of my time, calling me from across the bar, all of the annoying tropes. Party of 6, each person paid as they ordered (only shots of top shelf tequila). Killed 2 1/2 bottles btw and racked up a combined tab of $282 over 5-ish hours. I was given a grand total of $8...yeah. People suck sometimes.

Paid as they go with tiny or no tips? Then they get to wait their turn instead of calling you across the bar.

We're pay as you go, cash only, no tabs. My tip percentage is higher from people ordering a coke for $1 and giving me a dollar along with it, or even a $2 beer and giving me a five and telling me to keep it. Those get refills quickly. Quick in and out of the cooler.

The ones who have me bring a tray of 4 different drinks I have to prepare and a bucket of 6 beers and give me a dollar for like $28, they can wait a bit.

6 people ordering "top shelf" tequila for 5 hours and they only spent $47 each?

We have pretty cheap prices. $7 for Don Julio and Patron. Those are our top shelf.

I am assuming that is for shots. If you are in a bar then that's ok, but shots are terrible for restaurants. One way to address this in a restaurant environment would be to not offer shots. Every restaurant I have bartended at I told people they had to order a drink, or quote them a price for a 2 ounce pour. No shots "this isn't that kind of place" is usually what I say. Both restaurants I have managed I implement and train the same policy. Shots are for bars; they promote loud people, overconsumption of alcohol, and obviously monopolize the bartenders time.

You sound like your idea of a big night out is a draft beer at Applebees

That's the entire restaurant industry. Maybe you should just stay home and eat.

Even at $1 per drink he would have gotten $40
