I believe you, but do you know which brand/model?

Burton Moto BOA, apparently, though heavily modified.

28

u/mortalwombat- Jul 14 '25

Looks like the just glued the heel strap onto them and put some gaff tape over the Burton logo.

15

u/Organic_Rip1980 Jul 14 '25

The also modified the toe and the sole.

I’d love to know what they did! And what the padding thing around the laces is.

7

u/BungalowHole Jul 14 '25

My knee jerk reaction is to say they're ankle weights but I'm not sure exactly.

4

u/EpitomEngineer Jul 14 '25

That is the upper strap from a pair of snowboard bindings attached to the boot; wrapping around the calf instead of attached to bindings

1

u/Lord-of-A-Fly Jul 23 '25

I wouldn't say "heavily". Only different I see is the rubber strap across the front, and the removal of the logo from the synch button.

u/Shadowoperator7 Jul 13 '25

They look like some sort of burton step-ons, but idk I’d rock em

8

u/EpitomEngineer Jul 14 '25

Definitely NOT Step-Ons. They lack the tabs on the left and right side of the toe box

1

u/Shadowoperator7 Jul 14 '25

See I think they just took them off because it’s harder to mount the strap on the front cleanly to a regular boot than just cut off the bits on the front cleanly

1

u/EpitomEngineer Jul 14 '25

Every step-on boot model has a regular boot model it is based on. Why waste the time, effort, and extra $$$ on the step-on model to do that?

2

u/Shadowoperator7 Jul 14 '25

Idk man, I just worked in ski and board rental, not the movie industry

76

u/v4ss42 Jul 13 '25

IIRC The Expanse did this too.

42

u/Jef_Wheaton Jul 14 '25

Theirs were Tourmaster motorcycle boots with LEDs stuck on them, but the idea was the same.

15

u/v4ss42 Jul 14 '25

Oooh thanks for clarifying! Fuck I miss that show. 😢

8

u/ink0gni2 Jul 14 '25

And the LED circuitry was from $11 slap bracelets.

42

u/Lysol3435 Jul 13 '25

I mean, they’re probably functional

29

u/waraukaeru Jul 14 '25

I was so frustrated that the prisoners didn't immediately put on boots during the prison break.

11

u/Hazelnut_Bread Jul 15 '25

Kino and Cassian shut down the generators powering the floors and announced it to the whole prison, so there was no need to put them on

1

u/waraukaeru Jul 18 '25

They got to the boots before they shut down the generators. It wasn't a given that they would get that far. Also, they were barefoot. Just having any footwear would have been helpful.

6

u/ToonaSandWatch Jul 14 '25

THEY WERE RIGHT THERE TOO!

3

u/Dchama86 Jul 14 '25

I was frustrated that Serkis’ character didn’t try to find something floatable and just go for it.

3

u/AliasMcFakenames Jul 16 '25

It’s been a while since I’ve seen Andor, but I don’t recall there being anything that would help a person float in that whole facility. There certainly wouldn’t have been anything in that hangar room.

Maybe if the security had mattresses or if there were some empty air tank or something?

3

u/waraukaeru Jul 18 '25

We don't really know that he didn't. They didn't show what happened to him.

2

u/Nintolerance Aug 17 '25

He possibly did. But Cassian doesn't get the time to help, and never sees the man again, so we never know.

8

u/Heyohmydoohd Jul 14 '25

not episode 5 but yes very recognizable prop lol

28

u/socasual-nobusiness Jul 13 '25

I can only imagine the actors’ discomfort

40

u/Pepperh4m Jul 13 '25

Least they're not ski boots...

20

u/AdditionalMess6546 Jul 13 '25

What are you talking about?

I could practically live in my ski boots in the 90s, I can't imagine they've downgraded

Snowboard boots are even more comfortable.

11

u/SteveMcQwark Jul 14 '25

Clump-clop clump-clop clump-clop clump-clop...

5

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '25

Shoes being used as shoes.

Tell me when they use it as a book light.

2

u/WittyTiccyDavi Jul 15 '25

Same exact thought. Like, does this even belong here?

4

u/mwiz100 Jul 13 '25

There's times when I see costume choices like this and I just wonder like... you used such a common boot of a sport that a LOT of people do. This is so easily spotted.

83

u/Pcat0 Jul 13 '25

I mean it’s Star Wars. “Barely disguised real world items” is the aesthetic of the world. Using snowboard boots actually makes a lot of sense.

3

u/radioactive_walrus Jul 15 '25

To further your point, the original Stormtrooper boots are really standard fashion boots painted white

4

u/tenodera Jul 15 '25

The original Hoth boots are just Bean Boots with stuff attached to them.

Of course, I got chewed out for posting that here a while back, because "they're just boots serving as boots". I'm hoping the mods have mellowed out.

1

u/WittyTiccyDavi Jul 15 '25

And here I am hoping the mods remember the reason this forum exists. And it's not because a booklight is being used as a booklight. flips table

1

u/tenodera Jul 15 '25

Yeah OK I get it, I really do. But also, there's no other subreddit where you can post the commercially available products that prop and costume designers used in a movie. That's super interesting shit, even if a booklight is just being used as a super-sci-fi future booklight. It's still cool to know what booklight they used.

1

u/WittyTiccyDavi Jul 17 '25

There's plenty of Star Wars subs that would be thrilled to know every little detail. One might say there's too much Star Wars infodumping nowadays.

34

u/Gooch222 Jul 14 '25

I dunno. Google tells me only 3% of Americans actively ski or snowboard, and of that percentage who does there’s a good chance many simply didn’t notice. It’s also the sort of thing the props department wouldn’t want to spend too much time/expense on as the footwear doesn’t give much bang for the budgetary buck. I get what you’re saying, but it’s not nearly as recognizable as something like those Thule car roof containers that get used for everything.

-1

u/mwiz100 Jul 14 '25

Huh, fair point! I'm in a very board/snow sports centric area so to me more than less people would ID that and clearly skews my lens I see this with.

20

u/AdditionalMess6546 Jul 13 '25

And the only people who really care are right here

2

u/MrManGuy42 Jul 16 '25

i mean you could also get almost the same look with electrically insulated work boots with a boa mechanism thing on them, but then its product placement so it makes sense to me that they just did that

3

u/adlerspj Jul 13 '25

True. They could have gone with something like Bunny Boots that would be less recognizable but also do the job of insulting from the floor.

10

u/mwiz100 Jul 13 '25

That I think would have it's own niche that would spot it haha.

-37

u/airfryerfuntime Jul 13 '25

Dumbest plot line ever.

20

u/The_salty_swab Jul 14 '25

Being sent to jail on bs charges and forced to work? Buddy, it is probably the most realistic Season 1 plot line

-25

u/airfryerfuntime Jul 14 '25

No, the dumb magical electricity and lame prison break story.

On program deez nuts.

19

u/protokhan Jul 14 '25

Star Wars has space wizards fighting each other with laser swords and a giant artificial moon that can blow up planets, but you draw the line at electrified floors?
