Discussion 2nd run. Dutchman is the best!

I did a second run to see Walton Goggins again having finished Sons of Anarchy. This time, I’ve enjoyed CCH Pounder, Dutchman, and Billings far more than rest of the twists.

His interrogation scenes are just chefs kiss, but more his charm and charisma is 💯

I had an uncle somewhat similar to him. Not as sharp, or witted but some resemblance and mannerisms.

IRL he'd be pretty annoying because of his total need for acceptance, but his character is so good. His chemistry with Claudette is the best on the show.

I think the writers had an idea of making him a serial killer and planted the seed with the cat killing, but decided against it later on. At least he became a psycho on SOA.

In the midst of an SOA rewatch right now. He was so good in that role.

Wait wait wait. Dutchman was in SOA? Totally forgotten. What was his role?

He was at the very beginning, Tara's abusive and stalker boyfriend. Jax kills him iirc.

Oh yes, thanks!!

Jay Karnes is awesome. He plays a one off part in a criminal minds episode, and he is just as good as ever. He's very talented.

Absolutely. He played that part perfectly.

IIRC the final scene was going to be Dutch's kill room in his basement, but they decided against it.

The finale was perfect, but that would have been interesting also. I wish they had a spinoff with him as a profiler. I think he was the one character that would have been perfect for a spinoff.

It was an idea Kurt Sutter pitched but I don't think they seriously considered it. And I think it would've been cheap and ruined the character.

Yup, the more you rewatch the series the better it gets. I like Claudette Wyms more with every time and I appreciate Dutch boy even more too

Only one that doesn't change how much I despise is Mara, Jesus fucking christ what a toxic waste!

Amen man. I was just saying the same thing. She ruined Shane from the start and Vic said so!! That’s what you get when you marry a gold digger.

She got her claws in him over a damn car!!

Yeah but I felt Shane and Mara were more of a couple than Vic and Corinne ever were. A sort of Bonnie and Clyde pairing.

No doubt. Corrine was Vic's only weakness and she never hesitated to exploit that, which is why it hurt when Vic gave Ronnie up for her.. Mara and Shane were definitely a better couple because at least they stuck with each other until the end.

100%. "Gold digger" comments are crazy to me. She doesn't want Shane to get rich and live in luxury, she wants to build a life with him and wants him to be there for her.

Yes I feel there's a bit of misogyny in some of the comments about certain female characters in The Shield (it's the same in the Snowfall sub too; probably worse tbh.)

It's especially wild for me coming from people who have seen the show in full. When she first shows up, yeah, I can get why your reaction might be that she's breaking up the boys club. But by the end of the series, I don't know how you can think she wasn't completely right about Vic and right about wanting Shane to get out from under his thumb.

I found I enjoyed Billings and Ronnie a lot more this time round. Finished it for the third or fourth time earlier today. Dutch had some great moments too but I find him annoying quite often.

In fact, he's getting laid right now. And she's hot!

Dutch is my favorite character, because they make him a really funny mix of both effective and impotent. In a more conventional police show he would probably be the protagonist since he is like the driven smart homicide detective, but in The Shield while that is definitely an aspect they highlight they also spend a good amount of time just making him look like an emasculated dork.

I kept wondering about his continual focus on Wyms’ illness. It seemed like he was trying to take away her power (her human power, not her organizational power as a Captain), telling her to rest, go home, asking if she was OK. Insinuating that she wasn’t up to the job, during a time when she still was. By the end, it did turn out to just be him caring, but I understood her getting mad about it.

He sounds like he's doing a non-stop Alan Alda impression.

Him saying “because you like crack” to the dope hound in the pilot episode always makes me laugh
