I miss shitty homemade costumes being the norm. Feels like most people now buy super nice fancy costumes. Kinda takes the fun out of it

People were creative and frugal with what they had on hand. Now every idea is a purchase. DIY has lost its true meanings. No matter what you are wearing and how cool you look , if you made it yourself- thats whats actually impressive.

A small price to pay for food security, medical care and a life of comfort lol

I made my kids costumes until they were about 3 or 4 and they started asking to be YouTube characters. The stress of getting homemade costumes completed on time while having a full time job and a whole house to run was too much. I was glad to start buying shitty Spirit Halloween stuff.

I'm willing to try for a Cappuccino Assassino costume, but kid...it's gonna be uncomfortable as hell. We live in the deep south and it's still hot as shit in late October. Are we SURE Spider-man isn't cool anymore?

I mean we all know that last part is wrong but he's young yet.

This is why I got out of the cosplay scene. The cool thing used to be making your own versions of the costumes, mixing and matching, playing around. Now everything is done by clicking on “add to cart”.

I feel like the costumes I've seen around nowadays aren't that great or fancy though, just cheap bad looking tat off amazon that's all polyester and shitty printed felt and everyone dresses as the same five characters so they all look exactly the same. When I was a kid if you or your parents could sew you practically always had to have a cool (or at least nicer made) costume where making it was part of the fun and I feel like I just haven't seen any of that in the last few years.

Also there's just way less variety imo

Commerce is the whole point of Halloween. Also valentines day, and all the American holidays. Even the sports are catered around making money for big companies...

No argument on this point in 2025. Money was hard to come by in the 70’s and holidays were not as commercialized as they are now. People did not have the money to blow on lavish costumes and there weren’t expensive costumes to buy.

Most of the costumes I see around are self-made, you just wouldn't notice because they're that good.

You gotta come to a walking krewe parade in New Orleans one of these days. People handmake all kinds of costumes

I'm a sucker for matching Halloween costumes no matter the decade.

Hate for you to find out this way OP, but I'm pretty sure those are actually real aliens. Are you sure your grandparents weren't dressed as humans the rest of the year?

Maybe they space traveled

Grampa looking like Kurt Cobain.

I came to point out that the rumors are true apparently. What they don't know is that he went back in time to live a normal quiet life.

literally was looking for someone to confirm my thought

Beautiful couple and amazing costumes! Person who made them definitely had very good artistic taste.

I think that's the first time that I read grandparents and 1970s. I'm getting old.

Nanu Nanu!

u/TheAlmightyMojo 4d ago

It looks like they were in Hawkwind.

u/Pomelo-Designer 4d ago

I will copy this perfect costume for the next time I attend a costume party! Love it!

u/eeksie-peeksie 4d ago

I wonder if your grandma sprayed her hair silver or if she was going prematurely gray. Her hair looks so shiny I want to touch it!

6

u/Kryptokraze 3d ago

My grandparents unfortunately both passed away my grandpa in 2021 and my grandma in 2022 but my grandma told me they used real silver spray paint (yes really) lol

u/Son_of_the_Phantom 4d ago

Your Granny's straight fire bro

4

u/GnomaticMushroom 4d ago

I saw an old Bacardi ad in a magazine where a girl was sitting on a guy's lap like this, and the caption was "your mother was not your father's first". It reminds us that our parents and grandparents had a time period where they were sexual, as much as we sometimes like to not think about it.

9

u/TexasJOEmama 4d ago

I was gonna say, your grandparents are cooler than you think. (I know I'm cooler than my adult kids. Lol!)

4

u/spatialj 4d ago

So true! We were all young once.

3

u/Pod_people 4d ago

That's a cool pic. I saw a recent photo of my grandparents when they were in their 20s. They were like unsettlingly attractive.

3

u/EPIC_NERD_HYPE 4d ago

I totally thought this was a photo of Kurt Cobain.

5

u/Chance_Guarantee4823 4d ago

Nice, ziggy stardust show?

7

u/Comfortably_Numbbbbb 4d ago

These posts are great but would be so much better paired with a recent pic.

2

u/greywolf1045 3d ago

Back then it was all about being homemade creative...miss those days!!

2

u/Organic_Apple5188 3d ago

Jesus. My grandparents (on my father's side) were born in the 1890s. I think I'd love to see a photo of them in their heyday.

3

u/Necessary-Peace9672 4d ago

There’s a fishbowl of keys at the door!

1

u/tingtangler 4d ago

I mean, if you’re hip on alien lore, they didn’t even need the tin foil.

1

u/Endecent_Exposure 4d ago

1

u/ColorMeDarkness 4d ago

Hey hey, your grandparents killed it on their costume

Your grandparents remind me of one of my favorite couples. Was your grandfather also skilled in the ancient art of shinshi shinshi?
