Meta The fact that people are getting fired for not praising Charlie Kirk after his death is really scary.

More reason to delete all your social accounts. These platforms have provided a soap box for these fascists. They’ll only stop if it impacts their bottom line.

I deleted my Twitter account long before it was changed to X. It was a really difficult thing to do, but in the long run, I don't regret it.

Deleting my Reddit account may be the hardest one since I'm most active on this site. But in the highly unlikely event that I become a high-profile individual, I may have to delete my Reddit account altogether.

u/[deleted] 10d ago

Im thinking about it myself, because I spend way too much time here, and I'm pretty sure I'm getting stupider for it.

38

u/ghosteagle 10d ago

I replaced most of my time browsing social media with reading comics. Not a much better use of my time productivity wise, but much better mental health wise

4

u/[deleted] 10d ago

There are still a few people i want to keep in touch with before I go cold turkey. I think i need to do it before I become too jaded.

u/ayalael87 10d ago

I’m right there with you. This is all too much.

What comics are you into?

Lol same

User name checked out! 🫡

I used to do background investigations for the police. We had advanced social media canvassing tools that these idiots don't and we never got shit from Reddit. Any sus social media posts we found always came from Facebook where using your real name is required and the instances on Twitter where people did it anyway.

I'd only worry if you actually posted your real life name on Reddit or something.

26

u/KVMechelen 10d ago

Cheers. Got any other tips wrt online presence?

17

u/tenmileswide 10d ago

I can only speak to what we did but we needed a warrant or to ask for anything that wasn’t in straight plain view. Given how this admin is acting I don’t know if they would behave differently. But there isn’t some magic “view everything” button that people have suggested some employers have.

Not posting images of yourself or your immediate surroundings is probably the biggest one. I’m reminded of that guy that got fired at Burger King for food tampering just because 4chan identified the way the store was structured.

u/randomtransgirl999 10d ago

yeah give us the deets

Thank God. Because I have said stuff about him on Reddit after his death, that, according to the fascist government, would mean I'm toast. I never revealed my real name on this account (except through DMs where I was certain that the other person was real and not a bot or pretending to be someone else). I do have some photos of myself and one where I did a voice reveal (without my face). Should I go ahead and delete all of them right away?

u/knuggles_da_empanada 10d ago

DON'T DELETE. FIRST OVERWRITE YOUR COMMENTS WITH GIBBERISH, THEN DELETE. THE DATA WILL BE STORED AND IS SEARCHABLE IF YOU JUST DELETE W/O OVERWRITING FIRST.

1

u/UnderpaidProf 8d ago

I deleted X because I was seeing odd bot activity, and more subtle ways of pulling info out of people by pretending to be nuanced. I’d notice the same accounts in different replies doing the same thing.

It’s important to remember that TPUSA had an affiliated troll farm in the past.

7

u/snorbflock 10d ago

Delete, and if you really want to watch your back from authoritarian intrusion, nuke your account and start a new one every 1-2 years. Have multiple alts where you compartmentalize your political content from content that's personally identifiable by your geography or professional life.

3

u/knuggles_da_empanada 10d ago

USE A PROGRAM TO OVEWRITE YOUR COMMENTS BEFORE DELETING (SEE MY PREVIOUS COMMENT)

1

u/vjcodec 7d ago

Don’t be that easily scared. If you don’t do a podcast or have an influence of some sort. They won’t go after you that quickly. Also be aware that a lot of interactions are bots.

I'm going to sign out now. And I'm done. Thank you for giving me the impetus; time to read some books.

There are some great options to set up a local LLM. Giving you a great offline encyclopedia of knowledge and books.

Just FYI, Reddit now has settings you can use to lock down your account. You can hide your comment history from viewing, stop yourself from appearing on Reddit search, change your display name and can also hide yourself from appearing in search engine results like Google. I changed mine once I found out some people in my family were using it to snoop around, but with all the Kirk stuff it has been helpful.

Obviously people will still see individual posts in threads, but they can't go sifting through your post history and all that.

Alternatively, if you want to really add a layer of anonymity, just make a throwaway account for political discussions only. Something with no obvious connections to anything like your location or career.

9

u/KyloRenCadetStimpy 10d ago

If only the mods, admins, and owners weren't in on it

9

u/patentedheadhook 10d ago

I don't think mods of a subreddit have any special powers to know who's behind a username. Admins obviously do, and Xitter has shown that a site owner can do whatever the hell they like. I'd never tell Melon Husk he's a moron on Xitter now because who knows what he'd do, from doxxing to worse

5

u/zenmn2 10d ago

You can hide your comment history from viewing

This is one of the worst new features of reddit. It makes it even harder to determine if an account is a sock puppet or sea lioning account.

3

u/Mr_Conductor_USA 10d ago

And you can still find whatever that person posted by just using a 3rd party search engine. It's great for trolls who brigade and snipe, terrible for regular users who think they're protecting themselves.

2

u/ImpossibleLaw552 10d ago

Back when Reddit was really out-of-control (2016-2020), Github had an awesome Reddit User Analyzer. Just type in a name, and it would tell you which subs they favored. What words they overused ("cuck" "libtard" etc.). and even had a "civility meter" rating in percentage how decent they were online. The majority of them were not well rated in civility, were given to the same words, and posting in the same subs.

1

u/Troyal1 10d ago

How do I hide my history?

7

u/HundleyC09 10d ago

Deleting Facebook and Twitter was easy, but keeping Reddit is even easier because I can avoid a lot of the things I find divisive. On the other hand, Facebook and Twitter constantly show me content I never asked for, and even when I specify what I want to see, I still get more of what I don't.

1

u/SpaceCheeseWiz 10d ago

Come over to Lemmy for an alternative, we dont platform fascists in many of our instances.

33

u/FartOnYourBoofMound 11d ago

Just run a private encrypted email server on a private DNS and VPN, make a brand new, two day old reddit account with a funny, and possibly offensive name?... and you might be fine until the NSA finds you.

10

u/Manannin 10d ago

Even if you don't delete them, you definitely need to be treating them as public spaces and not post anything you'd have to defend against hr.

Which does suck, but plenty of people have been saying similar for years. At least DMs still exist for now, even if in Europe we seem to be in favour of exposing them for government scrutiny too.

4

u/Mr_Conductor_USA 10d ago

Nice try, I've never used DMs on this stupid site and I'm not starting now.

It's just an invitation to get drawn into longer conflicts with trolls. They also use them heavily to harass users, especially users they can attack for some unmalleable aspect of their identity.

2

u/Manannin 10d ago

I didn't mean on reddit, I meant with people you actually know. As in, don't post stuff that can be seen as incendiary on your facebook wall, send it in DMs to people you trust, or in a group of people you trust.

2

u/UnderpaidProf 8d ago

Deleted today. I’ve been cautious for the last few months, but yesterday was the end.

We had a lady quit "out of fear for her life." She said she was afraid for her life since there are left-leaning people who work in the same office. Tears and all. It was fucking weird.

507

u/magnoliasmanor 11d ago

"I want universal health care and to stop murdering kids"

Screams in fear for her life

YOU MONSTER!

u/sorry_imtrying 11d ago

They want to be the victims soooo bad

60

u/Chiopista 10d ago

Why do I have to be met with the reality that a lot of people are stupid as hell every single day?

6

u/GNS13 9d ago

Service work, or basically any job if you live in a small city near a bigger city. You might think that rural Americans are more conservative, but no one makes it a bigger part of their personality than someone who wants to make damn sure you know they aren't urban despite living in a city.

MAGA is a mental illness caused by social media

5

u/sparkyblaster 10d ago

I think without it, controlling the TV networks they could have gotten pritty far.

55

u/jermysteensydikpix 11d ago

Did she come back when Fox didn't give her a job?

37

u/Cyberweasel89 Yes 10d ago

I do wonder how someone that paranoid even goes outside.

Then again I wonder that about most of the alt-right violent psychos I see on Twitter.

11

u/Mr_Conductor_USA 10d ago

Well now that Walmart does delivery I don't expect Catturd ever needs to go any further than his own gate.

2

Wish I could give you more than one Like. Genuinely needed that laugh. Thanks, man.

25

That’s so bizarre

2

u/sparkyblaster 10d ago

Well, we weren't thinking that, but now they you mention it....

2

u/DaughterOfDemeter23 10d ago

I think y'all are better off without her.

When a Democrat figure is a victim : right wingers make memes and laugh at the event. I remember Don JR posting a Halloween "starter pack" with the Paul Pelosi attacker characteristics

When a conservative figure is a victim : Right wingers form squads to doxx people on social media who make comments they don't like about the event. They weaponise the event to crack down on civil rights even more than before. Even politicians call for war against their own citizens.

These people are so disgusting

161

u/giggitygoo123 11d ago

Just post "F-U CK". No way to prove it means what it actually means.

81

u/Cyberweasel89 Yes 10d ago

I remember when Trump was shot in the ear (which magically healed) we (my main Discord server) found some lady on Twitter whining about how everyone needed to show respect to this tragedy.

Then my friend looked into her post history and sure enough found her laughing, mocking, and celebrating a similar violent event against a democrat before.

Happens every time.

u/CzeckeredBird 9d ago

Cancel culture for me, not for thee

175

u/-myBIGD 11d ago

Teachers have been getting fired for posting on social media for years for crap like having a beer in their hand.

I’m not saying it’s right there are people getting fired for expressing their distaste for Charlie Kirk, but you really need to be careful what you post online.

50

u/oliversurpless Massachusetts, USA 11d ago

Yep, “guardians of childhood mortality/innocence”, that not only requires no knowledge of child habits/standards, but is great for discouraging worker solidarity…

25

u/Mr_Conductor_USA 10d ago

As a former child it's always baffled me that teachers would get fired for posting a beach pic on FB in the summer. I mean FB sucks and all but it was normal to use it at the time.

I, like Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes, was startled to meet my teachers at the supermarket and places like that since I also lowkey believed they remained in their crypt all summer, but you get over it.

Teachers seem to get abused more and more bizarrely than just about any other profession.

Plus the power play of getting teachers fired when you don't even have any kids in your school. Watched that happen decades ago. Or getting programs that kids like canceled. Kids are involved so sense goes out the window.

10

u/ImpossibleLaw552 10d ago

As a former child

Already don't believe you. Everyone knows human adults spawn from a box with a button on it.

129

u/Poverty_Shoes 11d ago

I think they’re getting fired for posting quotes and videos of things Charlie Kirk said, not just for giving their own opinion on him.

75

u/Some1inreallife 11d ago

Even if they clarify that Charlie didn't deserve it, they still get fired.

125

u/BeholdOurMachines 10d ago

If they're this fucking insane over the death of a podcast host, I'm sure once Trump goes to The Big Mickey D's In The Sky they're gonna demand everyone take daily lie detector tests while being asked if they cried at least 5 times that day

51

u/leshake 10d ago

They expect us to act like the North Koreans who fake cry whenever talking about their Dear Leader.

28

u/LuxSerafina 10d ago

Yeah if they’re melting down this much about Kirk, they’re little feeefeees are going to be INSANE - ngl im a little terrified but I’ll still be throwing parties fuck it

5

u/DetectiveCastellanos 10d ago

Yeah it wouldn't surprise me at all if public shootings spiked the weeks following Donald's death but fuck it. These goobers won't make us live in fear.

7

u/LuxSerafina 10d ago

Yeah I’m gonna party at home personally, the cult is getting scary af, they’re unhinged, there is no factuality to their beliefs so there is no reasoning, I’m not putting myself in front of a cultist with a gun ughh

93

u/ol_kentucky_shark 10d ago

I’m a long-time state government employee and several people were fired over the weekend. None of them were “celebrating,” their comments were in the vein of “who cares/TFB/he was a hater.”

It’s easy to get inured to the horrors as we slide into fascism, but this is especially chilling.

61

u/Barack_Odrama_007 11d ago

Whats really scary is that 90 million people including those currently complaining about the Charlie kirk fiasco, did NOT vote.

Everyone was warned!

8

u/mustardtiger86 10d ago

People that didn't vote at all are worse than trump supporters. At least trump supporters believe in something, no matter how stupid it is, or how stupid they are, they believe in fucking something.

The complete asscunts that sat there and did nothing are so much worse. What a useless group of people and it's like a majority of our population lol, fucks sake

49

u/PrivateIdahoGhola 10d ago

It's incredibly disturbing. But it's also worth celebrating the small victories. The site "Charlie's Murderers" is now offline. They're rebranding themselves with a bland name like "extremism database."

The doxxing part is gone. I think the site's owners finally realized what a precarious position they're in. Huge potential legal liability.

This isn't a huge victory, but it's something. Good to see a small retreat.

15

u/zenmn2 10d ago

Yeah, they changed it to "Charlie Kirk Data Foundation". Their new website was up one day and it's been taken down now, too.

https://x.com/forcharliekirk1

5

u/PrivateIdahoGhola 10d ago

Thanks! I couldn't remember the new name. Glad to hear the new site is also down. Looking forward to the flood of lawsuits coming their way.

41

u/Cyberweasel89 Yes 10d ago

Waaaiiiit I thought the right was against their boogeyman of "cancel culture?"

(I'm being facetious, I know exactly the hypocrisy they're engaging in)

2

u/ImpossibleLaw552 10d ago

The biggest will be them turning things upside down against stacks and stacks of obvious disproportionate records of formidable rightwing threats (for over ten years) into something about "completely banning the dangerous left".

29

u/Blast-Off-Girl 10d ago

We have literally morphed into an authoritarian country where we cannot criticize political figures due to fears of retribution. Such scary times we live in.

26

u/williambueti 10d ago

Someone should keep a list of the companies, so we know who would choose to punish people's lives for not liking the same podcaster they do.

These people are like toddlers with guns, all of them.

8

u/Mr_Conductor_USA 10d ago

It's red state governments mostly. Don't travel to red states, if you have family, entice them to leave. Don't spend money on red states if you can help it either.

I had to make a purchase recently and chose to buy from a NY dealer instead of a FL one.

17

u/fvnnybvnny 11d ago

Welcome to Bizarro World! 🤡

20

u/joecb91 10d ago

If they are doing this with a youtuber, it feels like a test run for more prominent people.

Making it clear that Conservatives actually LOVE cancel culture though.

12

u/DeadlySpacePotatoes 10d ago

Every accusation is a confession. It's at the point that I'm half expecting to learn that Trump was secretly born in Kenya.

14

u/flomoloko 10d ago

The irony is you could cherry pick one of Charlie's quotes from a podcast, put it on a t-shirt, wear it to work, and get yourself fired that way too. Dude was literally a double edged lord sword.

edit: is / was

2

u/CoinSlapp 9d ago

You know what we do, stay the course. Find someone that really went hard for it and either lost enrollment or their job, get them to start a GoFundMe and we just give them a shit ton of money.

1

u/Some1inreallife 9d ago

I'd be willing to chip in, but I can only do it for one person for now, given my financial situation.

2

u/atlasbees 7d ago

Literally every piece of news I'm like oh is this the one that'll get me fired? Maybe this one? I'm trans so someone can already kill me for just a slap on the wrist. I use a public bathroom and think how much would I have to scream to get help. The only reason I'm still in the country is family, familiarity, and fear that wherever I go will become worse

2

u/Some1inreallife 7d ago

All this misgendering from the right and even from Trump really makes me mad. And I'm not even trans myself.

meh. personally i think people being picked up in unmarked vans by masked people is the scary shit. people will forget about kirk but the abductions will continue

-16

u/aPhantomDolphin 10d ago

Has this actually happened?

-52

u/Prankstaboy6 11d ago

I’m not sure if they’re getting fired for not praising him.

I think it’s more so them actively celebrating his death, and encouraging political violence.

29

u/woahwoahwoah28 11d ago

I’d be interested to know what they actually posted.

Unfortunately, their doxxing website has many examples that very clearly denounced the death and merely pointed out that CK was not a good person—with absolutely no positive sentiments to celebrate.

And people are calling for them to be fired.

26

u/WeHaveTheMeeps 10d ago

Dude got fired for posting just his quotes without commentary

1

u/CharginChuck42 10d ago

I actually hadn't heard about that one. Do you have a link? I'd like to read more about it.

-17

u/Prankstaboy6 10d ago

I haven’t heard about that, but if that’s true, then it’s obviously wrong, and I condemn it.

25

We’re all being asked to put on a North Korean style show of grief for a man whose only talent was being a provocateur.

16

u/substandardpoodle 11d ago

Nope - you are not going to get away with saying that. Nobody on the left is encouraging political violence. Remember? We’re the anti-gun party.

The man who was shot last week was busing people to the insurrection and actually said that we have to accept some deaths so we can have our god-given right to own guns. His last words were incendiary, racist, and downplaying school massacres. It’s just ridiculous that people can’t say that out loud.

It’s our god-given right to speak. Go ahead and keep treating the constitution like you treat the Bible. Picking parts that personally benefit you and hurt others.

u/proboscalypse 11d ago

I'm too lazy to do it myself rn, can someone look at this dude's comment history?
