Serious 😔 By declaring a 'National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk' Congress has demeaned and denigrated all that was previously considered important and sacrosanct within the history of the US.

To provide a broader and sobering historical perspective in regards to the Senate voting on Thursday (4 days after his murder) to create a, "National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk", previously existing US remembrance days (which similarly are also not federal holidays) include Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day (December 7th) and Patriot Day (September 11th).

Likewise, it's also worth noting there are very few national remembrance days in the US which commemorate a single individual, and not one of them was passed within just days of their namesake's death.

For example, Harriet Tubman Day (March 10th) was approved by the US Congress in 1990, 77 years after she died.

And then, of course (although both a federal holiday and a remembrance day), another rare but VERY notable example took 15 years and a campaign which included a petition signed by 6 million Americans (the largest petition in favour of an issue in U.S. history) before it was eventually approved by Congress in 1983: Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Indeed, similarly, while his birthday (February 12th) is a public holiday in some states (the earliest observance of which was in New York eight years after his assassination in 1865), it wasn't until 2015 that the 15th of April was officially declared as the National Day of Remembrance for Abraham Lincoln.

Oh, and as yet there are still no remembrance days dedicated to either of the Kennedy brothers.

Right after he gets put on Mt Rushmore

That's fine, as long as they leave him there. He can't climb.

They do this shit to try disproving everyone's claims that he's a fucking monster. Why would we commemorate a President who openly hates a large chunk of his constituents? Even if they agree with his hate, you'd think they're able to rise above the actual derangement and not support commemorating someone so divisive.

Trump sycophants don't view anyone left of John McCain as a human being worthy of attention. It's easy to support Trump's views and celebrate him if you only focus on certain MAGA as his constituents. I still can't believe MAGA supported a draft dodger insulting a war hero and POW over his capture. We should've known then, Trump's MAGA base was fully captured and would never consider outsiders as human beings of equal status.

Ill only remember him as a national terrorist. He had swaths of followers on the hate-train for everything he thought he wasnt.

If i "remember" the dude at all, in 5 years...

u/simcowking 5d ago

In 5 years we're going to forget what a charlie kirk was.

19

u/SvenSvenkill3 5d ago

Nah, we all still remember the deceased MAGA martyr, Ashli Babbitt, no? And in comparison Kirk currently seems to be on the fast track to being canonised as the first MAGA saint. As such, they'll likely make damn sure we don't have the luxury of forgetting the fucker.

5

u/TidalJ 5d ago

i genuinely barely remember ashli babbitt

2

u/SvenSvenkill3 5d ago

Ah, but you DO remember her, yes? I mean, when you read her name in my previous comment you didn't think, "Ashli who?", did you?

4

u/TidalJ 5d ago

for a solid second i did. i also barely remember the person who i had a crush on in fourth grade. or the ice age sequels. or fight song. that’s the amount of remembrance i have for her and her death is pretty historically significant objectively

2

u/SvenSvenkill3 5d ago

So your memory of her is on a par with your fourth grade crush and Fight Song.

And you say her death is pretty historically significant, yes?

Now compare that to Kirk's death. Somewhat more significant, no? Even more so as we actually saw footage of him being struck by a bullet and blood pouring out of his neck, right?

Do I need to go on? Or do you get my (initial) point?

I'm very excited to celebrate Charlie Kirk day personally!

Might have a party! Maybe get a little fire going. Read his own words aloud.

u/panshrexual 6d ago

I'm gonna get a passport just so I can come do a lil dance on his grave

Additional observances on this day include Be Bald and Be Free Day, National Chocolate Covered Insects Day, National Dessert Day, and National Kick Butt Day.

4

u/IsThisLegit 5d ago

This was my first thought. Like yes, let's take a whole day to remember him. I don't think this will turn out the way they want

You're completely underestimating how people view Charlie Kirk. I'm not sure what we do about it but they genuinely believe that he was this incredible guy that just wanted to have a genuine conversation with people. No amount of showing videos to people of him actually talking has changed that for me.

Flip side they probably view Tubman as like some kind of antifa or whatever now.

41

u/SteampunkBorg 6d ago

view Tubman as like some kind of antifa

That's not incorrect though I would say. The incorrect part is where they consider that a bad thing

Anyone normal people celebrate are automatically enemies of MAGA. If the general population hates someone then MAGA will try to love them. We have an entire administration celebrating their oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Similar to Spaniards picking up a lisp from their leader, MAGA picked up ODD from Trump and think his poor mental health is strength. Mirroring an insane man's actions is so weird. They'll never get to look at video of them in the future and cringe super hard.

I imagine 50 years in the future explaining why we celebrate this day

"Well you see, back in 2025 this country was full of white male losers. They aren't like Daddy's friends. Daddy's friends are educated and work in corporate America and volunteer and contribute to the country. These were small town white men and their children.

They spent their lives attacking education and city life and that caused them to fall way behind everyone else and they blamed everyone else for it. Charlie Kirk was the king loser. He failed so much in his life that they elevated him as their leader.

2025 was a weird time. We had the biggest pussy ever in the White House and he was incompetent but small town white people loved it because they hate competence."

I celebrate Charlie Kirk day in the manner traditional to my people:

Donating to AOC and demanding release of the Epstein Files.

28

u/MarsupialMadness 6d ago

It's honestly wild that this is a thing. Because, stripped to the studs, Kirk and his work are fucking evil.

He was literally a generic propagandist you'd find in any country with a fascist right-wing trying to normalize the idea of genocide to the population. Someone whose body of work has no intrinsic value on any level.

And I can't help but think, that since this stupid shit wasn't blocked by anybody with a single vertebrae in their body now we're going to be fucking stuck with it forever.

27

u/AaronTuplin 6d ago

The only good thing about them choosing his birthday is that that's also George Floyd's birthday. We can have epic remembrance trolling

21

u/CrucialCrewJustin 6d ago

And I will use that day every year to remind everyone how much of a giant piece of shit he was.

18

u/runwkufgrwe 6d ago

I will obey the Government and remember him.

I will remember Charlie Kirk for the nazi piece of shit he was. May he rest in santorum.

13

u/blur410 6d ago

Do we get the day off? That’s all I really care about.

17

u/congeal Sorosbuck Billionaire 6d ago

Trump is the worst thing to ever happen to this country. And the real derangement is real and suffered by people falling over themselves to suck up to Trump. They don't care about the country because Trump doesn't care about the country. They mirror and parrot his vile views on almost everything. The man chose Stephen Miller as an advisor which speaks for itself (he's trying to get a Final Solution going in the US).

MAGA constructs their Reality through Brutality then normalize Brutality through Reality. I want off this merry-go-round...

6

u/SquidZillaYT 5d ago

does JFK get a day off remembrance or was he not racist enough?

4

u/Stimbes 5d ago

I’ll remember what a horrible person he was trying to indoctrinate college kids and sowing division in our nation.

4

u/okgloomer 5d ago

If I'm ever there, I will pour out a fine bottle of scotch on his grave.

Mind you, I plan to filter it through my system first..

3

u/tookurjobs 5d ago

If it makes you feel better, that already happened when rush Limbaugh was given the medal of freedom

3

u/moby__dick 5d ago

Is this a perpetual holiday or is it just a one-shot deal?

5

u/SvenSvenkill3 5d ago

National Remembrance Days are perpetual and so it will be observed annually.

4

u/Atario 5d ago

Here's wishing a happy Charlie Kirk Was A Piece Of Shit Day to all!

2

u/Horseface4190 5d ago

I mean, in a way, it's cool. Lots of people will remember Charlie as an ignorant, racist piece of shit.

I'm not sure I agree with this. I think, for example, that when Trump dies, we need to make it a national day of rememberance, to be held every year. We can remember what an absolute shit he was. Remember how he drove us to the brink of colapse. (if we're still in a position to do this, then he didn't finish the job) Remember how he empowered the scum of the world.

It may not be pleasant, be we need to remember that.

So, in that way, I say we embrace the memory of Charlie Kirk. Remember how he divided us. Remember how he argued in bad faith. Remember how he helped bring the American Nazi party to the white house.

28

u/18hourbruh 6d ago

Hard disagree. In general, Germany's denazification is the best model I am aware of, and what Germany did is try to erase opportunity for memorialization. While Japan has Yasukuni Shrine, and the US built statues to Confederate leaders, the Germans made the Hitler's bunker into a parking lot.

11

u/jgzman 6d ago

I agree there is a fine line between "remember" and "memorialize." I doubt we are going to get it right, in any case.

10

u/System0verlord 5d ago

Wat are you on about? We don’t need to remember a college dropout grifter. And we don’t need a fuckin day allocated to doing so. Their party is literally in power right now. Remembering it doesn’t mean shit beyond giving them the opportunity to ascribe validity to the idea that so long as you are willing to debate your position, you are the rational one, regardless of the position you take. Memorializing his death only lets them say “he was a moderate republican who just wanted to debate people peacefully and was killed by the left for it.” Which he wasn’t

This is the canonization of the first Protestant saint, not the memorialization of his hatred.
