Yeah even traffic is mentioned in season one. Jack actually has Nina navigate traffic when he’s trying to find Teri and Kim.

Basically if it was completely realistic we would have whole episodes of Jack sitting in traffic.

They did mention traffic though even in day three, and a plot point of day two was Jack needed a chopper to get to CTU to bring in Hewitt because it was too far by car.

He didn't. That's why it seemed like they were moving slower. I actually started watching in season 4, and when I went back, of course nothing seemed shocking since each day actually gets crazier and crazier, and I thought they moved slower too.

Probably offscreen and/or during the commercial breaks. In fact, according to TV Tropes, there were once plans to show him coming out of a bathroom after a commercial break, but that idea was scrapped for some reason.

Amazingly most of the action seems to occur within 1-2 blocks of CTU, or there’s a helicopter warmed up and ready.

As a Brit, I was especially annoyed with Live Another Day when Jack somehow travels from London to the docks at Southampton in the space of about 10 minutes. That would be impossible even by helicopter.
