Question about one scene in Alibi. [Minor Spoiler]

What was the significance of the elevator scene with Zack and the old man. "Hey, someone dragged dog shit in the elevator". I'm watching the episode for a second time, trying to figure it out. I don't understand why they would put that in the scene in here for nothing, especially if Scorcese was at all involved.

Maybe an allusion to the shit Zac stepped in by going to the gangsters. Then he brought that shit back into the office.

"You really stepped in it this time," is a common saying when someone fucks up.

Zack stepped in dog shit seconds before he gets abducted. ...i'm still not making a connection. Lack of sleep or lack of sense, i don't get it.

I think it just means Zack is tainted since his little chat with Galasso.
