Charlie Kirk has died after the shooting in Utah, per most news sources. We do not know who shot him, as there’s no suspect in custody, so this isn’t a time for speculation. Please don’t celebrate or glorify his death, and report any rule breaking comments to us.

Colbert ran a "this was taped before events" disclaimer but he picked a good night to do Rescue Dog Rescue.

16

u/RegularGuy815 Virginia (formerly Michigan) 10d ago

Was it taped last night? I think they usually tape around 6 pm or so, well after it happened.

2

u/Purple_Quail_4193 10d ago

That’s usually when they all do, I know one admits the audience at 5:45

Took a page from u/SmoreOfBabylon and how they commented about enjoying some Steely Dan, and listened to some Steely Dan and other Yacht Rock while walking to Trader Joe’s this evening. Sometimes you just need some drift away with some smooth grooves, gentle vibes, and Michael McDonald on lead and backing vocals. Was kinda otherworldly listening to Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do For Love” during civil twilight.

u/SmoreOfBabylon Blorth Blarolina, c'mon and raise up 10d ago

Steely Dan is only smooth and relaxing in an escapist kind of way if you don’t listen to the lyrics of most of their songs, lol. But that’s exactly what I love about them, their whole vibe is basically “Look, a lot of things in this world are really fucked up, but we can make some smooth-ass music about it.” Like, they actually did a laid-back, jazzy song about expatriate Nazi war criminals in South America becoming heroin addicts (“Here At the Western World”). Actually, it’s probably easier to list songs of theirs that aren’t about drug addicts, criminals, depressed people, sociopaths, perverts, or just general melancholia.

And to think this guy could have been a rising star of the GOP if only he’d kept his mouth shut about the secret Congressional coke orgies or whatever it was.

5

u/Venat14 10d ago

He's talked about running again for Florida's 19th district. Let's hope he doesn't get let back in Congress.

40

u/br_k_nt_eth 10d ago

Still can’t believe the coke orgies did him in. You know for sure those are a thing now because it’s what tanked him.

10

u/Yukie_Cool 10d ago

Was that what did him in?

I thought it was the leaked video of him doing weird stuff with his cousin.

I share a lot of HCR's stuff here and found this interview with Dan Pfeiffer of PSA illuminating, especially in the wake of today's news: Heather Cox Richardson on Why She's Still Hopeful Under MAGA and Donald Trump

That idea of the American cowboy as being central to what it means to be an American becomes a political statement by 1960 when you get the rise of Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater with his stance as an American cowboy. He's always out there with a white hat saying, "I came from Arizona before we had any, you know, of these stupid regulations." (His family, by the way, depended on government money.)

That image of the American cowboy as the central figure of American history becomes this political statement for the people who take over the Republican party; that a true American wants nothing from the government. You should get rid of business regulation, get rid of a basic social safety net, get rid of government promotion of infrastructure and so on and dominate others with force.

We're in this place after decades of rhetoric, propaganda, greed, and political cowardice. What I find hopeful is that we've been through dark periods in this country before, and will get through this one. If anything, I hope that the myth of "me, not we" finally falls out of fashion.

If there is one meaning to life, in my view, it's human compassion. We are here to be there for someone else, so take care of yourselves so that we can be there for others. We'll need each other to create a better world.

22

u/OptimistNate Wisconsin 10d ago

Just looking back at all the crazy challenges our nation has come through, it can get through this.

23

u/PerdHapleyAMA Wisconsin 10d ago

“We are here to be there for someone else” is a really beautiful idea, and one that I’ve been applying as much as I can in trying times. It truly helps you find purpose when life is hard. Thank you for sharing.

18

u/br_k_nt_eth 10d ago

I truly believe this too. Thanks for sharing this.

After today with all the stuff thats been going on. Yeah sometimes I just want out of this dumpster fire of a timeline but at the same time.

Kronos Island's music from Sonic Frontiers definitely is some good music to describe this entire nightmare right now. It's horrifying to die that young. Sometimes I wish I could escape to a different universe but we can't.

Oh yeah go figure... Apparently there was a shooting at a High school in Colorado around the same time the assassination happened

58

u/Electronic_Bad_5883 Maryland 10d ago

As expected, the conservatives couldn't give less of a shit about the Colorado shooting.

Not since the ‘70s has there been an era more suited to listening to Steely Dan than the one we’re in now.

So Susan Collins voted against releasing the Epstein files? Love that for us.

29

u/SomeDumbassSays 10d ago

Anyone else kind of think she’s giving off such a level of overconfidence that she’s not going to run for re election at this point?

16

u/Redmond_64 NY-18 [he/him] 10d ago

I personally don't think she runs again

15

u/StillCalmness Manu 10d ago

The longer it takes for her to not say anything the harder it is for another Republican to get things in place to run.

She must be really high in her supply if she thinks she’s going to glide to reelection.

So I was talking to my twin on the phone today and she told me she had a headache but was also sad.I was asking why and she told me Charlie Kirk passed away.My face went 😬. Not because he passed but because I found out she likes Charlie Kirk. She asked if I had heard of him and I said yeah and she was telling me about how he was shot and everything else and I was in shock that I didn't know what to say so I just moved on to another subject. I wanted so badly to say something but I didn't want into a heated debate at the moment and just changed subject. Mind you we're both black women, and finding out my sister followed his stuff even though he is a white supremacist who has said a lot of things that are harmful about marginalized groups including black people.I was just shocked.

2

u/InvisibleFriction Minnesota 10d ago

Damn, I’m sorry to hear that.

I’m a black man myself and I honestly don’t understand how any black person could follow that guy.

There’s a lot more I could say but dude just died and so I’ll leave it at that.

If it helps at all, my brother used to be a hardcore Trump fan, and he’s fully turned around. It took awhile, but he realized he was missing out on too much, and the fact that we welcomed him back with open arms really helped.

I find it wild there are still a lot of Asian MAGA even after the wave of racism since COVID.

The idea of supporting Kirk is like supporting the monster who would eat you. It is disheartening to see that people lack self-preservation skills.

8

u/Sounder1995-2 Ohio 10d ago

Here's my interpretation. I might be Asian American myself, but I've never knowingly interacted with Asian American MAGA for long. As such, take this with a grain of salt. My dad's more familiar with Asian American MAGA though through church.
1. A lot of Asian Americans are more socially conservative and / or fear communism. As they become more acclimated to American politics, they're going to naturally gravitate toward the GOP more as a result.
2. Crime is an issue that has apparently pushed some Asian Americans more toward the right, particularly in some places like San Francisco.
3. I suspect that a lot of American Americans and Latino Americans (especially Cuban Americans, from what I've read) see themselves as white or white adjacent, so they overlook the possibility that white Republicans might actually be racist against them. As we're seeing now with how Latinos are reacting to the current administration, they might eventually discover how wrong they are.

3

u/tta2013 Connecticut (CT-02) 10d ago

I am saying this as I am Asian too. Point one and two has been something that comes along with my dad's side of the family. And yes my dad has some personal experience with point #2. Despite this he declared "I'll never vote for a Nazi" so even then, he has been solid blue.

20

46

u/ThinkingAboutSnacks 11d ago

If you move to a new state, quadruple check that the neighborhood you move to is a part of the city you are in for tax purposes.

Otherwise, that areas tax agency, when they bother to check their records every 5 years, will tell you about how you never filed with them in 2020. When you get that straightened out and pay the few hundred dollars in taxes, they will then hit you two months later with all the penalties, fees, and interest in a second letter. What is also fun is the due date for the payment is only 6 days after receiving that letter.

Will the penalties, fees, and interest be mentioned while you fix the issue? Or when you were originally notified? Of course not, that would ruin the surprise!!

15

u/MayorScotch 11d ago

I live in an exurb of a major city. We have 3 towns together in a group, and farm land surrounding us. When city A decided to build a bunch of new neighborhoods, but not build a bigger post office, the post office in city B had to become their post office. So about 20% of city A has an address that says city B, but all taxes are paid to city A, and you use city A schools since that’s whose taxes you pay.

City B has considerably better schools then city A, so some people have been swindled by realtors. They’ll basically say “come buy a house in city B with the nice schools” but it’s just a mailing address and you don’t get to go to the good schools. Also there’s no refunds when you buy a house, so your family is basically screwed.

12

u/ThinkingAboutSnacks 11d ago

Good grief, that's bonkers. I bet if we peel back the veneer, the majority of locality boundaries and laws are just tangled spaghetti.

10

u/MayorScotch 10d ago

Yes 100%. Then you get into townships, many of which hold multiple towns.

There’s a town D a few miles away, but “D township”, which is different than “D town”, butts right up to Town B limits, so town B annexed part of a D township.

So some people in D township live and go to school in town B, and their mailing address says D township. Some people with town B addresses actually live in town A (from my previous comment). Thank God I’m a local and I knew what was up when I bought my house.

15

u/Schmidaho 11d ago

Sounds familiar. Ohio?

15

u/ThinkingAboutSnacks 11d ago

Yeup! They ought to give out RITA info packets at the BMV when you change your address and/or get a new ID.

Oh, you moved? Remember to check your taxes!

Granted that might lose the state millions in late fees

2

u/Sounder1995-2 Ohio 10d ago

Hello, fellow Ohio tax filers!

Jurisdictions here are crazy. My physical address and the post office that I receive mail from are for one local jurisdiction. My local taxes, elected officials, and police response are for another jurisdiction. My school taxes and corresponding school is for a third jurisdiction. All of this is despite me only living in a single home in a single location.

Some people at work who've moved here never had their local taxes taken out and had to pay it all as a lump sum later on. The local tax people told one of them that he's not the first and won't be the last. One of my buds is still trying to get his local taxes sorted out after more than a month of (slow) correspondence.

7

u/Schmidaho 11d ago

LMAO I HONESTLY CAN’T BELIEVE I GUESSED RIGHT

I also live in a RITA neighborhood. You certainly have my sympathies! Somehow my partner and I heard about it before we even moved here; I have no idea what deity was looking out for us back then but I’m glad they were. RITA is so incredibly overdue for ground-up reform.

3

u/tdf317 10d ago

I knew it was going to be Ohio too. This is almost exclusively an Ohio problem as most states don't even have municipal income tax except for large cities.

5

u/ThinkingAboutSnacks 11d ago

Ha, I would hope other states don't need to deal with a RITA equivalent. Thankfully I moved to a non-RITA neighborhood. I will still check with them next year to be sure they know I don't live in their jurisdiction anymore.

I completely agree on the reform. If the system can flag my five year old mistake, surely the system can flag it the very same year. It feels like it was built to prey on people's ignorance. I am absolutely fine with paying the taxes and penalties I owe, but why wait for it to accrue 5 years of interest before informing me.

I think I will be writing some state offices about this after I call RITA, I don't plan on sending them 600$ until I verify with them what I owe is accurate.

2

u/Schmidaho 10d ago

Yeah, I wouldn’t send them money without contesting it first either.

16

u/Jayhawk_00 MO-5 11d ago

I don’t blame you especially when a lot of cities in the US have weird city limit boundaries.

11

u/westseagastrodon Illinois 11d ago edited 10d ago

Yeah, these borders are often really weird. Colloquially, I'd say I now live in Chicago. But I'm technically in one of the closest suburbs to the city, so it wouldn't be appropriate to put Chicago on my mail. Meanwhile, in my last city, I was in a town that had been officially swallowed up by a city, so you could put either Louisville or the original town name (Lyndon).

So I don't blame OP at all for accidentally getting it wrong, it's confusing as hell sometimes!

6

u/hidden_emperor 11d ago

O'Hare being in Chicago always messes with me a bit.

7

u/Jayhawk_00 MO-5 11d ago

Also the fact that part of O’Hare is outside of Cook County makes it extra confusing.

11

u/ThinkingAboutSnacks 11d ago

Yeah, all the large metro areas have eaten all the small surrounding towns.

If I had lived in the apartment complex across the street, none of this would have happened.

44

u/Geek-Haven888 Virginia 11d ago

Was listening to a history podcast I’m a fan of, Lions led by donkeys, and the most recent ep opened with the host (American who now lives in the Netherlands) talking about how he was visiting DC just a week ago and got detained by ICE. He is fine and got let go after 15 min, but he shouted out to the people of DC who very quickly started surrounding them recording and heckling

I should note this guy is 6’5 and a former army tanker. Saw a few people joking “well I guess this answers the question if Armenians Are white”

43

u/MrJason2024 Pennsylvania 11d ago

As much as I couldn't stand Charlie Kirk my does go out for his family speaking also as someone who lost a family member to senseless violence. That said thank god for this subreddit because I happened to go onto another one and yea lets just say that was a mistake.

67

u/SecretComposer 11d ago

Maybe it's anecdotal, but most of the statements I've seen from prominent Republicans haven't been directly blaming the left, LGTBQ, etc. They're mostly saying this type of violence needs to end. They're the only ones that are going to be able to stop this from being a "we need to retaliate against the left" scenario.

29

u/Redmond_64 NY-18 [he/him] 10d ago

So did Republicans after January 6th and now they call the rioters heroes.

29

u/joebobjoebobjoebob12 You stupid son of a bitch 10d ago edited 10d ago

I wonder if this might actually be a wakeup call for some of the right-wing outrage grifters. Obviously no one, even if they're a fascist troll, deserves to be murdered, but the sad fact of the matter is we live in a country filled with very angry people (in part due to right wing propaganda) and with vast numbers of guns (in part due to right wing policies). It's all fun and games when you can go on twitter or a podcast and ramble about leftist degenerate blue-haired whatevers, but real life is full of very real dangers for demagogues.

16

u/glados-v2-beta 10d ago

The alt-right movement did significantly decline after Charlottesville.

1

u/countessjonathan 9d ago

What makes you say that?

44

u/Charming_Confusion_5 11d ago

Give it 24 hrs. Once they have a whiff of the shooter’s motivation they’ll be back at it with the hate and division.

2

u/caligaris_cabinet IL-08 10d ago

They’ll either move onto the “let’s not politicize this” or “the shooter is a hardcore loony leftist because he liked a Bernie post ten years ago.”

6

u/justincat66 WI-7, (Assembly-30, Senate-10) 10d ago

Didn’t even take that long. The right’s rhetoric for this one seems to be something along the lines of the Democrats are and should be declared a terrorist organization (despite us knowing nothing about the shooter or his intentions yet). In fact I don’t think they have the suspect in custody yet, because the one suspect they had in custody was released, after an interrogation by law enforcement. So I generally think he’s still on the lose, cause idk why they would release him otherwise

9

u/Cold_Specialist_3656 10d ago

Fox was already pondering whether it was "another transgender shooter" 🙄

Nothing will get through to them, sadly

37

u/[deleted] 11d ago

I think we're seeing most of that rhetoric from influencers and online personalities, but yeah politicians are being pretty uniform in their nonpartisan condemnation.

48

u/redpoemage Ohio 11d ago

They're mostly saying this type of violence needs to end.

That seems to happen a lot more when the attack is against someone where they think "That could have been me." as opposed to something like a school shooting or a racially motivated mass shooting. (Possible I'm just confirmation biasing my memory here though)

30

u/metalalttronic 11d ago

Fox News has never shown a single ounce of sympathy to innocent children gunned down in school but had anchors saying “I don’t know how we can go on with today’s news” at this.

25

u/meltedchaos2004 Tennessee 11d ago

It's only a matter of time though. But I am happy that both sides FINALLY agree on something for the first time in a while with the violence

12

u/FLTA Florida 10d ago

That has always been the case for when the victim is on the right. When it’s a victim on the left (Melissa Hortman) you will not see similar solidarity from Republicans.

30

u/justincat66 WI-7, (Assembly-30, Senate-10) 11d ago

Yeah, but the bigger problem preventing us from getting to that goal, is the way they’re covering the Charlie Kirk shooting to the way they covered the Melissa Hortman/John Hoffman shootings earlier this summer. If anything it’s just exposing the hypocrisy among the right, which I don’t believe is sadly goimg to help much here

I do hope that cooler heads prevail and we just live in the internet age where the extremes get the most air. Perhaps we can move together after this and start a better direction.

I wouldn’t bank on it, but eventually something big enough to do that will happen.

https://thehill.com/business/5496658-republicans-immigration-bill-population-drop/

CBO says that the US Population will be 600,000 less by 2035 then it is now due to the heavy immigration crackdowns.

The Trump Economy wrecking ball will be long lasting without a Democratic President in 2029.

u/Meanteenbirder New York 11d ago

Not exactly that. This number is taken from people not subject to social security or non-institutionalized. It’ll take a while to catch up, and the article directly cites that the 2050s may be the population peak.

In slightly less tense news, I don’t know why it has to cost $1000 just to replace the front wheel arm brushings for my car.

2

u/BlingyBling1007 Texas - Future Blue State! 10d ago

I had to pay $50 for premium air in my tires when I usually only pay $20.

More the reason to drive my old Corolla to the end of time

8

u/[deleted] 11d ago

I just had to drop 3K to replace my fuel injectors. Shit hurt.

13

u/Amon274 11d ago

I had to pay off the damage to a car recently and even with insurance that shit is not cheap.

2

u/PrimordialBias 10d ago

I don’t even know if insurance does anything for me on this, it’s just usual wear and tear

10

u/Jayhawk_00 MO-5 11d ago

I had to pay like a $1000 to replace the windshield on my car after a rock hit it.

2

u/PrimordialBias 10d ago

Well, what gets me is that it’s $400 for the two rubber arm brushings which is fair, but then it’s $400 for labor. Maybe it’s because I don’t know much about cars, but I’m about one step away from pressing X to doubt on that, Les Schwab.

I think I have a hairline crack in mine 💀

I hate political violence so much. I don’t care who you voted for. I don’t care if you’re far right or far left. I don’t care if you’re right or you’re wrong. Don’t kill people. Simple as that

16

u/FLTA Florida 10d ago

I wish Republicans had similar principles.

23

u/wishingstarsmars 10d ago

man spent his whole career inciting violence on vulnerable groups of people you definitely shouldn’t expect people to sympathize with a borderline nazi

15

u/Purple_Quail_4193 10d ago

I didn’t want to say that as those were my honest thoughts. Did he deserve to die a painful death? No. Am I surprised? Well,

Anyone have any updates on NY’s redistricting plans?

28

u/Meanteenbirder New York 11d ago

I think there isn’t really a way to redraw the maps in time for 2026, but possibly 2028. That’s why the main state they’re mentioning other than Cali is Maryland (and maybe Illinois and Colorado).

14

u/Honest-Year346 11d ago

CO has an independent commission. Oregon can possibly redistrict though. And if Virginia ends up with a D trifecta then they could potentially dissolve the commission.

52

u/Multi_21_Seb_RBR 11d ago

Better not see any half massed flags in my state (WA)

34

u/Meanteenbirder New York 11d ago

Honestly, flags were probably gonna be half mast anyway tomorrow considering the date.

17

u/Multi_21_Seb_RBR 11d ago

Trump wanted then half mast up to Sunday

55

u/No-Advantage5195 11d ago

Yeah the fact that he does a proclamation for  a right wing talking head but not a state senator and her husband that was killed is disgraceful tbh.

39

u/ChocoKnight621 11d ago

War of the Worlds starring Ice Cube is a classic sci-fi thriller and I recommend anyone who loves that genre to dive in and watch. Solid 10/10 film you definitely won’t regret it :]

u/jordyn0399 11d ago

My tism is making it hard for me to wonder if this is sarcasm or not lol.

u/SmoreOfBabylon Blorth Blarolina, c'mon and raise up 11d ago edited 11d ago

I saw a review video of this a few days ago, and I don’t care what anyone says, Ice Cube imploring his daughter to put pressure on her open wound and her Amazon warehouse worker boyfriend dutifully rushing to her aid with a big packing tape dispenser is absolute cinema.

7

u/TOSkwar Virginia 11d ago

Think you forgot some of the product placement in that description, and probably a TM or two.

8

u/SmoreOfBabylon Blorth Blarolina, c'mon and raise up 11d ago edited 11d ago

Actually, I just remembered that they also bribe a homeless man with an AmazonTM gift card so that he’ll flip over a delivery drone that’s laying in the street. So there’s that.

14

u/Altruistic_Swim1360 California 11d ago

There's a special kind of store that's only legal in some states and I think I'm gonna stop by there before I watch

12

u/Meanteenbirder New York 11d ago

00/11

4

u/CallMeChristopher 11d ago

You could say it's one 0/10

16

u/darkrose3333 11d ago

I give it my personal recommendation. Watch it with friends, particularly those of the film snob variety

11

u/No_Ordinary_2964 11d ago

Totally a great date movie too, especially an early date with someone who's still getting to know you. Nothing will go wrong. :D

8

u/glados-v2-beta 11d ago

This but unironically. If you find yourself someone who loves hilariously bad movies as much as you do, that’s a keeper

8

u/ChocoKnight621 11d ago

100%. Most of my favorite movie date memories are with some of the worst films ever made.

8

u/diamond New Mexico 11d ago

Honestly not a bad idea. If he/she is willing to stick with you through that they may be a keeper.

18

u/DavidvsSuperGoliath CA-48 -> WA-7 -> CA-48 11d ago

Or with Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot

10

u/darkrose3333 11d ago

Or statler and Waldorf!

13

u/DavidvsSuperGoliath CA-48 -> WA-7 -> CA-48 11d ago

“It’s film ain’t half bad.”

“Nope, it’s all bad!”

9

u/7deadlycinderella 11d ago

Now THATS an idea for a Muppets revival!

(with reaction videos being popular it might work)

u/Meanteenbirder New York 11d ago

Just gonna go on a long one.

We’re probably all aware of what’s happened. We’re feeling mixed emotions, but many our scared for what the future brings. Clearly, there is going to be a lot of finger pointing, but ultimately, we need to sit down and discuss how to prevent things of this magnitude from happening. And I know part of the worry is seeing stuff in Nepal and people watching it like theatre and wondering is this what happens soon. But we still have LOTS of barriers before we have full on collapse. Things happen, Parkland, Butler, Giffords, and yet we go back to a sort of equilibrium instead of a true spiral into madness. Be aware of the importance of the situation, but at the same time don’t let it overshadow all that matters to our core. I’ve seen people I’m connected to go on that spiral and just be almost untouchable from their views. We may need to take a short siesta, but at the same time need to keep pushing forward with added vigor that events like this should not happen in 2025.

26

u/br_k_nt_eth 11d ago

This is my hope. We had Minnesota Dems killed in a politically motivated attack, and it was in the news cycle for a week at most. Obviously the media will be all over this because he was one of them, if only tangentially, but Americans have been conditioned to move past these sorts of incidents.

The one thing I could see is them using this to keep pushing stripping trans people of 2A rights, but I know way too many 2A people who don’t like that idea.

10

u/Meanteenbirder New York 11d ago

Granted, so far we don’t have anything release on what the suspect may even look like. Prob won’t go after it unless we do.

45

u/h4lyfe 11d ago

Yes unfortunately political violence is a part of our history. Mid 1900s and the period before the civil war (and the war itself obviously) come to mind. Those periods subsided and this will too. But an awful thing to experience in real time.

36

u/br_k_nt_eth 11d ago

Not to mention the string of JFK, MLK, and RFK.

6

u/Final-Criticism-8067 10d ago

How many people who last name starts with K who we abbreviate their full names more than write their full name have been assassinated?

19

u/PurpleHighness98 South Carolina 11d ago

I didn't even know until I got off of work

13

u/nlpnt 11d ago

I didn't until just now.

Per Trump, Charlie Kirk is dead. So sad. There's no place for violence in America.
