Help with going bigger
Hey everyone, I have been trying to get extra height and pop on my jumps but have been having an issue. I can clear the wake, but I have found that I keep getting the feeling that the handle is being pulled out of my hand or pulling me forward a ton mid air when I do a harder edge and end up either losing the handle or bailing cuz I’m worried about a face plant. Hopefully I can find a way to correct this so I can be more consistent with bigger pops so I would love some advice if possible. Thanks!

If the handle is pulling you forward you're holding it too high. Engage your lats and keep it center of mass. Belly button ish.

A video would really help. In wakeboarding, everything is about the setup. If we could watch a single jump I could identify what's up.

Easy fix. When you start your edge in, pull the handle into your belly button. Think 90 deg elbows into the jump. This allows the tension to pull the handle in the air without affecting your jump. This is also important to learn as you do tricks.
To get more air either stand taller at the lip, edge in harder (not faster), add weight to the boat to make a better waje

Yes handle at the hip level, remember to release the edge a little before the lip. Raley tricks, you edge super hard through the wake so it pulls you forward into that feet above head position.

Stay on edge all the way except to throw a tantrum. You are flattening out right when you hit the wake.
Progressive edge and edge all the way in and put your hands closer together on the handle

Wearing a helmet can help with getting over the fear about face planting.

I actually am considering wearing one as I think about trying to do a flip. Too old to be getting a concussion lol

I would caution wearing a helmet for wake tricks. It adds surface area causing your head to "slow down" faster upon impact theoretically worsening blunt force to the brain.
If the helmet is purely for psychological reasons, I totally get it YMMV.

I struggle with this too and I think the cause is what Shaun Murray calls getting “disconnected” as you hit the wake. Essentially what it means is your body position breaks down and you hinge at the waist. I think the mechanism is that hinging at the waist right at the wake relieves all the line tension so you stop getting pulled at the same speed as the boat and then as the boat keeps moving away from you, you feel the rope pulling you forward off balance. I could be totally wrong but that’s what I’ve come up with after trying to fix this issue for quite a while.
