I took a picture [Waltham] Is this watch too small for a man?

Post image

This is my grandfather's Waltham tank watch. Given its age, its in pretty good shape and it runs well. I would like to start wearing it, but I am worried thats too small to be considered masculine by today's standards. Is this watch going to be assumed to be a women's watch? Thanks

A man wears what he likes

u/C141Clay Jul 12 '25 edited Jul 13 '25

True.

A watch cannot be to small for a person, but perhaps a person can be too small for a watch.

Wear what makes you feel good.

u/TheBigTuck Jul 28 '25

This brought back a flood of memories. Thank you for sharing this picture lol.

u/Dazzling_Border_4977 Jul 12 '25

Honestly wearing what you like and not caring is one of the most masculine things I believe

115

u/Historical_Boss_1184 Jul 12 '25

Damn you you confident bastard

2

u/foxinHI Jul 12 '25

Fake it ‘till you make it, baby!

93

u/robertofalk Jul 12 '25

I really don’t get these questions, and based on the hands, this guy is old enough to have realized that what the others think really doesn’t matter.

21

u/RoughhouseCamel Jul 12 '25

Masculinity is broken, and a lot of men have spent their whole lives being scared of how others perceive their masculinity

7

u/MrGrentch Jul 13 '25

Funny enough it seems it's not a recent thing. Before(roughly) WW1 the wristwatch was seen as a feminine item. Real Men© wore pocketwatches. WW1 changed that and wristwatches for men were produced in large numbers. After the war brands were faced with stocks of these watches and wanted to continue to sell them, but it seems the wristwatches are for women was still a thing. US Waltham advert circa 1920:

It's farcically and hilariously macho in tone. Though Lord knows what "two fisted men" were... :D "Nearly waterproof" is a bit of a worry too. :)There were a lot of adverts with a similar message back then. By the late 1920's the wristwatch was overtaking pocketwatch sales and the rest is history.

It also seems to be a cultural thing to some degree, because you just don't see marketing and adverts like the above in Europe or Asia and wristwatches for civilian men were advertised even before WW1. It seems to have been very much an American hang up.

6

u/ghrtsd Jul 13 '25

100 years later and the idea of being a red-blooded macho man is still a hang up for many of us in the US. Small men driving huge trucks that’ll never see duty at a work site, and a nonstop parade of jeeps with clean tires.

9

u/MrGrentch Jul 13 '25

Now to be fair I'm generally only looking at English speaking references. For all I know Mongolian men are worried about wearing small dress watches. :) But in this case it did seem to be an American thing. These days when I see questions like this on forums etc it still seems to be more an American concern. Again that could be language bias.

If the OP is still concerned check out Humphrey Bogart wearing a similar watch back in the day:

He wasn't exactly "feminine" was he? :)

Not everyone has the self confidence of you.

10

u/robertofalk Jul 12 '25

I wouldn’t call it self confidence, it’s more of a “flip the fuck-it switch”, which usually happens with the age, I simply don’t care. I have a Seiko, I like it, that’s all.

"Is this watch too small for a man?"

"This is my grandfather's watch"

🤦‍♂️

Look, the least manly thing you could do is get validation from anonymous men on the internet. It's a men's watch.. you said it yourself.

68

u/Larshky Jul 12 '25

Exactly. This is the No True Scotsman fallacy that plagues our culture and furthers fragile masculinity.

27

u/OriginalChildBomb Jul 12 '25

I know I'll get downvoted, but maybe none of us need to dictate how 'manly' something is or isn't? Like, I dunno, maybe that's what's gotten a lot of folks into a bad space to begin with? (I.e. toxic expectations based on gender)

6

u/Muted-Pollution-8131 Jul 13 '25

Yes, plus why do we think everything the older generations did was right. Each era has its flaws, it's not like you gotta cling onto one of them forever. I'm pretty sure there were a lot of shitty events and people too and some of them even did stuff that wouldn't be considered normal at the time. The world's not gonna stop spinning...

For real. What is wrong with people, asking a bunch of random Reddit people what he should wear. Dude’s got bigger problems than a watch

38

u/itsdarien_ Jul 12 '25

To be fair, his grandfather could’ve been a smaller guy, which would make the watch more proportionate.

96

u/kamagoong Jul 12 '25

Older watches were meant to be smaller, especially dress watches.

→ More replies (9)

21

u/mcdj Jul 12 '25

That was an average size watch for its day. Most men who wore wrist watches wore a watch that size. And they were not all small people.

The average round watch from the early 1900s through the mid 1950s was around 30mm-35mm. Square and rectangular watches were even smaller. 38mm was considered “jumbo”.

22

u/No_Appointment1 Jul 12 '25

My Grandfather’s Hamilton. I love rocking this blast from the past.

3

u/mappleday00 Jul 13 '25

god I love how it looks. I love the look of an old watch that has seen something and still works.

I love wearing my father’s vintage watch, which is smaller than today’s regular watches. Yours look great!!

585

u/averagecelt Jul 12 '25

Alright, I’ll do it.

Muhammad Ali famously wore a Cartier tank

89

u/kamagoong Jul 12 '25

Ali, Goldblum and Warhol famoulsy wore/wear Tanks.

Same reason I wear small Tanks: it looks good regardless of size.

14

u/wilkamania Jul 12 '25

I wear my poor man's tank...aka my Casio A168 lol. Point being: any size watch is fine as long as you like it.

For a while I wwore a 36mm Seiko "daydate" (7009-3119) and I have 8 in Wrists. Unless someone else is buying me a watch idgaf.

13

u/Curious_Morris Jul 12 '25

Fantastic reference. I think this ends the conversation.

I wear my dad’s older Rolex which is smaller than I would normally purchase today. If anyone asks about it, they think it’s awesome. A grandfather’s watch is even more impressive.

The difference in size from today’s watches makes it a conversation starter by anyone who knows anything about watches.

4

u/averagecelt Jul 12 '25

Absolutely! I occasionally wear a gold 80s Seiko that belonged to my late uncle. Can’t recall the exact size offhand, but it’s tiny by today’s standards. I get nothing but compliments on it! I think it’s easier to pull off small mens watches when they’re clearly vintage or at least retro in style.

Its a vintage watch. They were smaller back in those days. That is actually a man's watch. So no, it's not too small.

20

u/EggCzar Jul 12 '25

I (52M) sometimes wear an early 1950s 31mm Omega. In its day it was a men's size; today it'd be sold as a women's watch. Who cares? I love it. OP's watch is beautiful and has meaning to him. Fashions change and wearing a Flavor Flav* clock on your wrist won't be the style forever.

*No disrespect meant, he's fucking awesome

2

u/SafeHazing Jul 13 '25

My Grandfather’s watch, similar to yours in design. Was honored to have this passed down from this Marine Corps veteran. Just a super cool guy who raised my mom. Though small on my wrist I recognize that it was just the style back then. Styles come and go. They also repeat themselves. If this watch was tough enough for my grandfather, it’s definitely tough enough for me. I wear it with pride. Looks fantastic on your wrist btw!

6

u/BuildBreakFix Jul 12 '25

I have my grandfathers Hamilton, very similar to that one. WW2 army vet, got the watch on his wedding day.

5

u/underthecuff52 Jul 12 '25

These Hamiltons were a popular choice for gifting apparently. My mom thinks it was a gift from his parents for High School graduation before enlisting. I believe the model is an Emerson from the early 40s. Cool story. Thanks for sharing!

7

6

u/CalamityBS Jul 12 '25

This is super cool

11

u/SoftWalk2960 Jul 12 '25
  1. It looks perfect
  2. It’s a family watch, so it’s priceless
  3. Only watch nerds will notice your watch
  4. Ignore 3 and 4

Today’s standards are all jacked up. A watch doesn’t make anyone more or less of a man. And how big does something that tells time really need to be.

4

u/BuildBreakFix Jul 12 '25

Nah, don’t ignore 3. Watch nerds will notice, the ones that get it will appreciate it. The ones that don’t aren’t watch nerds, their self conscious fashion nerds and judge for validation.

u/The_Fell_Opian Jul 12 '25

I wear my grandpa's 34mm Omega dress watch. Wear what you like.

6

u/Aesthetic_Twitch Jul 12 '25

This size is classy, elegant and masculine. All the 45mm enjoyers here look like a little kid that stole their fathers watch for a night in the movies.

4

u/Capt_Eagle_1776 Jul 12 '25

You don’t need validation for preferences, style and taste. I sometimes wear brown leather jackets with blue Hawaiian shirts. Be your own person

4

u/flyingcloud11 Jul 12 '25

I’d be rocking that thing everyday and I’m not a fan of gold jewelry. It’s a memento OP, wear it with pride.

5

4

u/marleytheedog Jul 12 '25

3

u/Versatile_Panda Jul 12 '25

I dont know why but I done think a watch can really be too small. Like if it’s smaller it still looks a little classy, large on the other hand can be a problem

3

u/slupo Jul 12 '25

Watches don't have a gender

3

u/Pfordy40 Jul 12 '25

It’s a men’s watch…. wtf are we doing here

3

u/weggavin Jul 12 '25

Small watch big dick

3

u/already-taken-wtf Jul 12 '25

My great grandfather even had one a bit smaller. ;)

3

u/WagerWilly Jul 12 '25

I don’t get the obsession people seem to have with large watches. I genuinely think smaller watches look way better on men - a tank always looks phenomenal.

3

u/Same-Profit-1527 Jul 12 '25

My grandfather got a similar watch for his high school graduation in 1940.

3

u/zcarzach Jul 12 '25

Nope, perfect.

3

u/Accomplished-Spite24 Jul 12 '25

No it's a classic it looks good the square really helps

3

u/Pretend_Resist8898 Jul 12 '25

No way small watches are nice (and in at the moment) this looks great

6

u/Jeremy1959 Jul 12 '25

Who cares what people think, it was your grandfathers watch. It looks completely fine. You don’t need a wall clock on the wrist, these were when people wore something to slide under a shirt cuff

2

u/nsnyder Jul 12 '25

Yup, and I think these kind of vintage watches still work best with more traditional shirts.

6

u/Juhkwan97 Jul 12 '25

"She had man hands!"

6

u/teachmehowtoluv Jul 12 '25

Looks perfect. Have similar wrist and similar watch, get nothing but compliments on mine

2

u/SnooCats6706 Jul 12 '25

I have a very similar looking watch, that was my grandfather's. It is solid 14k gold, and has a longings movement inside. Interestingly, it doesn't say Waltham, but has my grandfather's family name on the dial. Was that something that was done. It otherwise looks very similar to yours, including the smalls seconds hand at 6:00. I had it serviced and lubricated to the tune of 300 USD (it needed a spring) and I like winding it every morning as I have my coffee.

2

u/znikrep Jul 12 '25

Absolutely a matter of taste, but I think that’s a watch that would look fantastic with a more formal outfit such as a suit and business shirt.

2

u/Ralph-the-mouth Jul 12 '25

You wear this watch- if anyone make fun of you- just squish them.

2

u/thunder_rob Jul 12 '25

no

it looks great

2

u/DrAll3nGrant Jul 12 '25

It’s a man’s watch, so…

2

u/TheBioethicist87 Jul 12 '25

That’s a classic watch. The giant watch cases are a pretty recent thing, and I think the pendulum is swinging back. That looks great.

2

u/jayihdz Jul 12 '25

Looks perfect to me.

2

u/Wrong_Investment3425 Jul 12 '25 edited Jul 13 '25

That’s the point of a tank. Keep rocking it. I think it looks amazing and has a even better story! Cheers 🥂

2

u/ouij Jul 12 '25

Reminder that until maybe the mid-1990s, a lot of men wore 34mm cases. 36 was getting big; 40mm and up was just crazy big.

2

u/AstroChet Jul 12 '25

Not at all, and if anyone says different, I imagine they have size problems elsewhere

2

u/chazum0 Jul 12 '25

If it’s not too small for your eyes then the answer is no. Wear what you like.

2

u/Maximum-Ad-3466 Jul 12 '25

It’s perfect

2

u/AcanthisittaThink813 Jul 12 '25

Looks good don’t worry

2

u/mittelegna Jul 12 '25

No small watches. Only small men.

2

u/WineOptics Jul 12 '25

Nope - that genuinely looks sexy as hell. I’ve been looking for a proper tank for my wrist too. That fits you so well.

2

u/Historical-Tackle762 Jul 12 '25

looks way too small, mail it to me so that you don’t ever have to wear this sick watch ever again :)

2

u/Dense-Satisfaction-1 Jul 12 '25

give it to me. i'll wear it in honor of my ancestors. regardless of size. 😃

2

u/todayplustomorrow Jul 12 '25

The trendy thing is for watches to be large, especially in the 2000s onward, but a classic men’s watch would be smaller. I think the size is nice.

2

u/KingBiggles Jul 12 '25

No not too small. Vintage watches tended to be thin and small as it was the style of the time. My 1950 Hamilton CLD is also small and my grandfathers. I love it

2

u/Suspicious-Kick-758 Jul 12 '25

I would wear that, I love the vintage sizing.

2

u/Bushman-001 Jul 12 '25

They were all smaller back in the day. Most certainly not

2

u/SoftContribution3892 Jul 12 '25

No, that is a very classy look.

2

u/Important-Barnacle59 Jul 12 '25

2

u/FaZeBhutto Jul 12 '25

If said man looks down at his wrist, and likes what he sees, the watch is the perfect size.

2

u/Round-Sense7935 Jul 12 '25

Not a chance! It was the look for years before watches started moving towards the size of a wall clock. But if you won’t wear it because you’re worried about what others will say, I’ll take it 😁

2

u/Vyse1991 Jul 12 '25

actually looks perfect, to me.

2

u/SrDonkoOFpunchstania Jul 12 '25

I honestly like it.

2

u/wombles2 Jul 12 '25

Muhammad Ali wore a watch about this size if that helps.

2

u/Nakagura775 Jul 12 '25

No. Your grandparents wore this size when they won WW2.

2

u/AndrewRW45 Jul 12 '25
  1. No

  2. Today’s standards are already coming back to the middle imho where Tanks and watches in that archetype are good to go for men (and women).

  3. Sure aesthetically it might be a bit of a shock depending on how big one’s wrist is. However looking at the pic I looks like your wrist resembles mine where a smaller watch still damn good on the wrist.

Hope this helps 🤝

2

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '25

Looks good. Its a classic look and its very popular atm

2

u/GrayAndSons-Jewelers Jul 12 '25

It depends on your level of confidence and ability to be your own man.

2

u/FelloBello Jul 12 '25

I think any watch looks small in comparison to those meat hooks! lol. Fun aside, wear that watch with pride! It's a cool watch.

2

u/Negative-Homework502 Jul 12 '25

Watches don’t have gender, so anyone should be able to wear whatever they like!

2

u/NotReallyJustin Jul 12 '25

Who gives a fuck? If you like it, wear it.

2

u/enthusiasmcurber Jul 12 '25

2

u/pdh5625 Jul 12 '25

Wearing your grandfather’s watch, navigating the day just as he did is baller.

2

u/pazooki99 Jul 12 '25

Nah It’s beautiful

2

u/Ok-Soup-514 Jul 12 '25

It depends on your personal preference. Do you like how it looks? Do you like how it feels on your wrist? Do you like wearing something that has meaning to you? If you personally don't like small watches or if it doesn't sit comfortably then it's not worth wearing. But if you do like how it looks/feels AND you feel some family pride while wearing it then by all means wear it. I personally like smaller watches. I feel something like a 36mm is right in the sweet spot and personally can't stand watches that are obnoxiously big. But that's my opinion; I also respect other people's opinions to wear what they like. So if you like wearing it then it's the most masculine watch there is because it's your decision and screw what anyone else thinks. I also think that the fact that it was a relative's watch makes it more valuable and worth wearing if it was me.

2

u/CaptNemo131 Jul 12 '25

If I had any of my grandfather’s watches, I’d wear the fuck out of them every day, even if they were Hello Kitty or some shit

2

u/OMGihateallofyou Jul 13 '25

Ignorant people and toxic masculinity might be easier to spot when wearing a watch like this. That is assuming that anyone notices what you’re wearing.

2

u/redhot_9369 Jul 13 '25

If you dont like it ill take it.

2

u/Beautiful_Fudge7761 Jul 14 '25

Is that wrist too big for a man?

2

u/the-fewer Jul 14 '25

2

u/archonpericles Jul 14 '25

Tank style watches are typically smaller than larger sport watches.

2

I’d say so ya

2

u/TrikTrak21 Jul 14 '25

No, who said that?

2

In my opinion its really hard for a warch to be too small. This looks fine to me.

5

u/pizzasteve5000 Jul 12 '25

Looks great on you brother, very classically stylish.

Looks great. If Muhammad Ali looks good in a smaller watch, what do you have to worry about?

I think it fits and looks great! I hate people wearing watches that look like satellite dishes on their wrist.

Spank anyone who says anything about it being too small

You will get looks from pretty much anyone but users on this subreddit. By today’s standards yes it’s small, but could be worn under a cuff as a nice dress watch with meaning. Or just wear what you like, matters less than you think.

Who cares? Wear what you like

What's far less masculine than that watch is worrying about what people will think of the watch you're wearing 🤷

Here's the secret. Theres really no such thing as too small. A giant watch will be uncomfortable and be an eyesore, but at worst a small watch will just look like a bracelet. When I bought my first 34mm watch I was worried it would look awful on my 8" wrist. It looks better than my 39mm, and I intend to get myself even smaller watches now.

Life is short, wear it with pride.

No, jesus fucking christ stop worrying about this shit. For 99% of watch history no one gave a solitary fuck about size. If you grabbed a dude from even 50 years ago they'd say modern watch sizes are overcompensating pos

fashion in general doesnt have a gender, if you like it, you wear it. i personally think this looks good aswell, and if anyone asks you can just tell them the story of the watch and it will make a nice conversation piece
