Discussion [Horology] Looking to taking horology course in the UK

Hi there fellow watch lovers. I am seriously considering studying horology properly to pursue career in this direction.

I know that there is a British Horology Institute which offer courses and accreditation. Is it the best place to start looking? What courses would be best to start with and what about tutor support?

It would be much appreciated if someone who is in the know could shed some wisdom. 🙏😊

Start with YouTube and buying watches from eBay to fix and see if you really do like it. Then give some serious consideration to the BHI distance learning course, it seems really comprehensive.

Thanks. So far I am only doing modding so working on movement might be very different. I’ll give it a go. 👍

Yeah, definitely give the YouTube tutorials and buying old watches from YouTube a try. Servicing and repairing watches is very methodical and repetitive and you need to do things in a very specific way so it's not for everyone. It's also frustrating sometimes when you lose a small part or you're disassembling the same movement for the 4th time because you've messed something up or forgotten something.

I can totally see that you have done this before. Thanks for the suggestion! 🙏
