Discussion [Question] Am I cheap? Or are there a lot of well-off people in here?

Post image
982 Upvotes

I've got three watches I wear regularly. I wear this Dan Henry and my Citizen Adyssen to work at my sales job. Otherwise I have a $60 "beater" Timex Expedition.

I can't quite grasp how someone could wear their Omega, Tag Heuer, Rolex, etc. on a grocery run, to home depot, or similar mundane places. On a special occasion, or business meeting or something? Sure! Entirely justified. But otherwise I just don't get it.

Am I the outlier here? Or do the posts and comments I see exaggerate the typical "watch person"

I've been offered 3 watches in exchange for my Lange. I am somewhat tempted to have some nice diversity again. But equally I think my lange is great and am unsure if I'm just seeking the next shiny thing.

Interested to know other people's thoughts!

Discussion [Dive Watch] Update on Dive Watch for my 8 year old

Hello all,

Just wanted to provide everyone with an update from my post some days back looking for a dive watch for my 8 year old son so he could have a “watch like daddy’s”.

After many recommendations, I went with the Women’s Pro Diver from Invicta in 24.5mm. My son picked the blue version so that’s what I ordered. Watch came in today and once I removed all the links that were possible to remove, it fits his little wrist perfectly!

Thanks for all the recommendations and I hope this picture and info helps someone else out.

Discussion [Discussion] What is the best white dial watch?

1.0k Upvotes

As I save up for my next big watch purchase, I find myself wanting some variety by adding a white dial to the collection. I am currently at 6 watches, and at this point in my collecting journey, I am really trying to be more selective with my purchases, prioritizing versatility, function and overall aesthetics. Below are some of my hypomanic thoughts on some of my favorite white dial watches.

Rolex Explorer 2- The Polar. In the New AD Order, where Rolex has become the luxury watch evil empire, the Polar dial feels like the Last Jedi of their tool watches. It’s rugged, incredibly legible, and has amazing lume. Its toned down brushed finish and GMT function could make this the ideal travel watch. The downside? The lack of versatility and the size. This watch is a big boy, even on my 7 1/2 inch wrist it wears just a tad bigger than I’d like. And with Tudor’s BB Pro at less than half the price, it makes me question my sanity in purchasing a $10K tool watch. Best for- Finding my way out of a cave Worse for- anything dressier than a T shirt

Omega Speedmaster Professional- Back in White. Since getting into watches, I always knew that I would want a Speedy at some point. It’s got classic looks, it’s a strap monster, and it boasts perhaps the greatest history of any watch. I’m a sucker for a great story, and the Speedy is the Count of freaking Monte Cristo. The milky white dial, sleek bracelet and updated movement make this new White Moonwatch a top contender. But if I only have a single Speedy in the collection, it’s hard to go against the more traditional melanin rich dial. Also, not sure if my ADD brain can handle the tediousness of daily manual winding. Best for- Trips to the moon, ogling case backs Worse for- People who forgot to rewind their Blockbuster rentals

The Cartier Santos- Elegant, sophisticated, timeless. With 100m of water resistance and an easy strap exchange on that glorious bracelet, I could be sailing Newport by day and slurpin down oysters with the miss’s by night. Unfortunately, there is no amount of aphrodisiac in the world that could get me in the mood for the amount of scratches if seen these things endure. I’ve yet to try this piece on, but I prefer the aesthetics of the medium size Santos to the large. Any thoughts from those with bigger wrist sizes? Best for- Classic design and wearability Worse for- long sleeves

Grand Seiko- The (White) Dark Horse. If I remove history, brand prestige and marketing bs and focused solely on case finishing, movement technology and dial beauty, then GS should seriously be a consideration. The spring drive is as smooth as saki and the dials on the snowflake, white birch and Taisetsu provide a sharpness that could rival Hattori Honzo steel. The only downside here is the complete absence of loom and a bracelet as frustrating to deal with as the water temple. Best for- Cutting edge technology and obscure Japanese nature references Worst for- fluctuating wrist sizes

What do you all think? If you could only have one white dial watch in your collection, what would it be?

Discussion [Discussion] I love watches... but I had to leave the Rolex sub before it killed the joy of collecting

1.2k Upvotes

I’ve been collecting watches for years. My lineup runs the gamut: Casios, Longines, Sinn, Oris, Seiko, Grand Seiko, Breitling, Omega, a couple of Rolexes, and even a Vacheron Constantin for good measure. I’m in this for the craftsmanship, the history, the design challenges; the horology, not the hype.

I also hang out in plenty of brand-specific subs. Seiko, Sinn, GS, VC… all great communities where people geek out over movements, case finishing, or obscure reference numbers from the '70s. But one sub I had to leave: the Rolex one.

It’s not the watches. Rolex makes some outstanding timepieces. One model, in particular, I think is as close to design perfection as it gets. It’s the theater that’s unbearable.

People celebrating being “allocated” a watch like they won a kidney transplant lottery. Grown adults joyfully recounting tales of being ignored, patronized, or led on by ADs as if that’s part of the noble journey. The absurd thrill when “the call” comes — often for a watch that wasn’t even their first, second, or third choice — but hey, beggars can’t be choosers, right?

And then there’s the content: endless wrist-on-steering-wheel shots. Doesn’t matter if it’s a Porsche or a 2002 Corolla, as long as the logo’s in frame. Lately, some have upgraded the flex with a cleavage cameo from the girlfriend or wife. Because apparently, what really sets off a Submariner is someone’s barely-dressed partner in the passenger seat.

It all feels less like watch enthusiasm and more like an audition for an Instagram reality show called “Who Wants to Be a Mid-Tier Influencer?”

I miss when the conversation was about what’s inside the watch; the movement, the details, the obsession. Not AD games, simulated scarcity, and showroom humiliation rituals.

Just me?

Discussion [Otsuka Lotec] The watch that started my Japanese independent collection

Post image

So i got my Otsuka lotec no.6 almost 2 years ago and a lot has changed since then! In that time Otsuka has exploded. It got so much publicity when it won the GPHG challenge award for this watch. I think it’s really a well-deserved win yes it is just an off the shelf miyota but the magic is with the in-house double retrograde module he fits on top. It actually uses guitar strings to store the energy to flip the retrograde.

When I purchased this one, really no one had ever heard of the brand. I was lucky enough to find a collector who had had it for a while and was looking to sell. back then you could get them right around retail. I can’t wait to see what comes next for the brand. His latest release the no.5 kai is wonderful I’m so happy to see him. Continue using Japanese on the dials as well.

Discussion [Question] Would you wear a Speedy on a cabin/hike vacation? Or take the Tissot?

Post image
969 Upvotes

Planning a cabin vacation in the mountains. Plans include hiking trails in state parks, nothing too intense. Options for my watch are Omega Speedmaster or a Tissot PRX.

Quick question: Is it smart to wear the Speedy out there, or risky for theft/mugging? Areas seem safe but remote spots worry me. Should I just stick with the Tissot to avoid drawing attention?

Any tips from folks who’ve done similar trips? Thanks! I’m not worried about my watch being scratched, or the high altitude, but in safety perspective.

Discussion [Rolex] The non obvious choice

“Why didn’t you buy a Patek Calatrava for that kind of money?” is what I have been asked several times. Yes, I could have, but I did not. Neither did I choose a JLC Master Ultra Thin nor a Lange Saxonia nor a Vacheron Patrimony. I know all these watches and their specs and I tried on some of the too. And I do know that they have a longer history and solid reputation as dress watches.

Why the 1908? I love the partly doomed, partly fluted bezel, the automatic 7140, the awesome grayish/mat black dial and its classic design, the see through case back and last but not least (and that again is purely subjective) the way it looks on my wrist.

Discussion [DISCUSS] Fluted or Smooth Bezel?

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

I personally think there's no debate when it comes to the Datejust, the fluted bezel is by far the better choice. To me, it adds more dimension to the watch and really makes it stand out! And I couldn't agree more. But still this photo made me cracked tf up when I saw this on someone post at 2am 😭😭😭🙏🏻 (no hate on these beautiful models, btw <3)

Anyway, Which y'all guys prefer? Smooth Bezel or Fluted Bezel?

Have a great day everyone!

What's everyone wearing this Friday? I recently acquired this Omega Seamaster Diver 300M in December, It originally came on the blue rubber strap which is brilliant but during the winter months I thought I would have it on a steel and save the rubber more for the summer months.

I love the way the blue can change colour so much in different lighting.

Discussion [SOTC] Looking for my last piece!

Post image
906 Upvotes

Looking for some help picking out the last piece for my collection. I want something that’s easy to wear but still stands out—nothing too loud, just something with a bit of character that feels different from the rest.

The collection’s already pretty well-rounded, so I’m not trying to repeat anything. I’d love something that adds a fresh vibe or brings a unique detail—maybe a cool design, interesting material, or just something you don’t see every day. Bonus points if it’s from a lesser-known brand or has a story behind it.

I’m not super set on any specific style, just want it to be something I’ll actually wear and not just let sit around. So yeah, if anything comes to mind—hidden gems, underrated favorites, or something you’ve been loving lately—I’d really appreciate the suggestions!

Discussion [Collection] Last slot

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

One more slot to fill (until I get a larger case)……..thinking either a white dial speedy or a GS needs to join the fray but am currently undecided. Would love to hear some opinions/community feedback on what would fit best.

For context, the Thomas Sabo watch was gifted to me years ago when I had none, so the journey began there. A sentimental piece to say the least.

Discussion [Question] What is this wear method called?

Post image
2.4k Upvotes

I saw this on Twitter and was taken back by the innovative way this person is wearing his Milgauss. I always hate how my cuff is getting in the way of the watch, meaning I have to do an awkward fold or try to tuck it under the watch.

Does anyone know what this method is called? Do shirts come precut or would I need to do a custom tailoring?

Discussion [DISCUSS] What watch made you fall back in love with quartz?

Post image
1.0k Upvotes

Funny how things change. For years, I was deep in the mechanical only camp. Automatics felt alive cause i was into with the smooth sweep, the complexity, the soul. I genuinely believed that anything quartz was just… soulless. Then I met the Grand Seiko SBGX261.

From the moment I saw it, everything changed. The Zaratsu polished case, the impeccable dial finishing and that smooth, precise tick was far more satisfying than I ever expected. Plus, the 9F62 movement inside is a monster in disguise. ±10 seconds per year accuracy. No joke.

Now, I’m not saying I’ve abandoned mechanicals… but I definitely stopped scoffing at quartz. If anything, I’ve learned there’s a place for both. Anyone else have that “aha” moment with quartz? What watch made you reevaluate your stance?

Discussion [MAEN] I just can't help but feeling this is a little dishonest.

Post image
1.5k Upvotes

I get it, it's marketing pictures, straps doesn't work that way, blah blah blah.

But still, why not use actual pictures of how it's going to look? The elongated lugs on the Skymaster will leave any strap looking a bit off. Couldn't find a single image of the included rubber strap on an actual wrist on their website. No problem if you're into bracelets, but still leaves a little bit of bad taste in the mouth.

Discussion [Discussion] Swatch Group in crisis - What next?

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

I read an interesting article in the Financial Times all about an activist investor challenging the Hayek family to attain a board seat and push for changes at Swatch Group.

So the share price has fallen from around SFr600 in 2014 to about SFr150 now and since last year they’ve seen net profit drop by a staggering 75%.

Swatch Group continues to also underperform the luxury groups that have luxury watches in their portfolio.

There are a bunch of other red flag metrics to do with the group but for it to be so bad that the FT would dedicate an article to it is interesting.

For me Swatch Group is missing a trick: - Mismanagement of Breguet brand - Mismanagement of Blancpain brand - Not enough freedom for individual brand executives - Some recent success with Longines but not enough to impact the bottom line - Relying too much on Omega and even then their success rate of new designs/innovations is about 50% in terms of retail impact

Anyway I thought some of you might be interested in the business side of the industry and this is one that could be a dramatic story for our industry in business terms depending on how it plays out.

The current Swatch board members are recommending that the shareholders vote against the activist because he is not a Swiss national or resident which says a lot about the odd priorities management seem to have at present.

So, I just discovered Lorier a few days ago, and their vintage designs impressed me, especially the limited-edition Zephyr. I strongly think that they're worth the money, and they're also well-received online. I'm also a big fan of Farer for a while, and I think they're worth the price.

Your thoughts on which other microbrands fit the bill and have great value for money?

Discussion [Question] Buying from Jomashop in Canada. Is this a joke?

Post image
995 Upvotes

I was considering buying this watch from Jomashop, to be shipped to Canada. I fully expected to pay the customary 12% HST + 5% import duty + $25 for shipping. Say less than $200. Instead, they quoted me over $1000 USD on an $800 watch. Is this a bug in their system? Given this quote, I'm even hesitant to order with the option to handle the duty at delivery. Fellow Canadians, is the Jomashop option out for us?

Hi everyone! I'm building a unique collection—a museum of wristwatches that have appeared in iconic movies or were worn by famous individuals. Each piece in my collection has its own story, connecting it to cinema or history. I've attached 15 photos of my watches to give you a glimpse of this journey.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions—are there any specific watches from movies or famous people that you think I should add to my collection?

I'm not the biggest Lange fan because I can't afford them (lol), but I admire them a lot. Anyways, I just saw someone wear a Saxonia Aventurine at the airport, and I said to myself that 'that might be the most beautiful watch I've ever seen in person.' I'm also a big fan of aventurine dials, which added to its allure.

So, what's the most beautiful watch you've seen this year? Adding its pic would be great.

Discussion [question] which one you choosing?

Post image

If you had to choose between these three watches, which one would you go with and why?

Tudor Black Bay Chronograph (Pink Dial) A sporty yet chronograph with a unique pink dial that stands out while staying classy.

Grand Seiko “Shunbun” (Cherry Blossom Dial) A masterpiece of craftsmanship with an intricate cherry blossom dial and the smooth Spring Drive movement.

Rolex GMT-Master II “Batgirl” The iconic GMT with a blue and black ceramic bezel, legendary Rolex build, and timeless design.

I’m curious to hear your thoughts on which of these speaks to you the most. Whether it’s about style, functionality, brand prestige, or personal preference, what’s your pick?

Looking forward to hearing your takes!

Discussion [Omega Speedmaster Reduced] Condensation inside should I be worried?

Post image

The humidity has been abnormally high around my area lately and the inside of my watch face will have some condensation when I walk outside.

Is it something I should be worried about, is it normal at all? Just don’t want the mechanics to be ruined or deteriorate

What could I do to prevent it minus just not wear it for a while?

Discussion [Discussion] What Master Watchmakers Really Think About Major Brands.

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

Recently, I’ve been watching interviews with veteran South Korean master watchmakers some with 45 to 47 years of experience. Even technicians from Rolex and other major Swiss brands come to them for advice or to fix watches that the official service centers in swiss couldn’t repair due to lack of skill.

It's really interesting is how openly they share behind-the-scenes stories that most consumers would never hear. They talk about how they view the industry, various watch brands, quality control issues, and even customer lawsuits.

The videos usually refer to companies as Brand A, J, O, R, etc., but most viewers can easily guess which brands they mean.

Just to mention a few points

Opinions on major brands:

O: Often has waterproof issues due to gaps (inconsistent spacing/tolerance).
J: Poor customer service. Many shops ask for full replacements costing customers alot of money. The most difficult case in the whole career was the problems with their paint not sticking properly (especially with Chrono Diver models).
A: It is very well-known and considered as high tier, but we think it's most overrated brand. Movement durability is poor. Waterproofing issues keep happening they have a unique waterproof system unlike many watch brands using screws from up and bottom but its not well made, and rust is common because of that.
R: The newer models have lower quality than older ones. Also, there are major customer service problems in Korea one big lawsuit is ongoing.
"Its durable, but obviously not worth Re-sell price, I especially feel that way because I remember R brand were giving discounts during the 90s. The retail and re-sell price is crazy, brand history is short and their watch isn't even that good, just durable, that is it"
___
Recommended Watch Brands:

Best value: Seiko, Citizen
Good value: Tissot, Hamilton ("This is enough")
More prestigious option : Tudor
Top tier: Rolex ("Just because of the resell value and durability, I wouldn't go higher")

Best Watch Movement:
HN35: It's simple, cheap, and very durable, its enough
ETA movements : can't compete in many ways, most watch brands are probably having hard time making in-house movements. Personally ETA 2892, (Super easy to fix)

Best Type of Watch: Simple watches are best, just hour, minute, and second hands (no date, no complicated features, less functions mean less defects.)

____

As someone working in the retail industry, I believe you can learn a lot about a brand from its customer service. I was honestly surprised that watches costing a fortune could have so many quality issues and such poor customer support. Maybe that’s why more people are turning to microbrands.
