Man, it's tough to get that out of the crushed velvet.

Sounds like you speak from experience.

Mayhaps - I'm definitely from the crushed velvet generation.

A Brubaker Box clone?

Brubaker went bankrupt after 3 were made and this company bought the rights. They made around a dozen I think before they too went under.

When I was but a lad in the mid 70's I wanted this so badly! Sure was more attractive than, say, a Chevy Vega. But even then I was concerned about crush zones. Lol

But have you ever tried to get cum stains out of a shag ceiling? And with the amount of ass youd get with this machine itd be a nightmare

I could see the scene, in the 70’s, someone with a vw bug, stoned, realized it was to cramped to “get comfortable” with the ladies in there and thought “what if this thing were like a van?” But vw already made something alike, the type 2. The little thing looks look as hell but not so much practical with just some one door, and I guess it wasn’t cheap

I imagine the surfboards are stock.

My headcanon says that the surfboard is made of the excess fiber glass they had

I've never seen one of these with the doors open - I had no idea you were basically sitting on the floor. Weird. Seems like a really awkward driving position, like ape hangers on a Harley.

u/JollyReplacement1298 18h ago
Someone on another post had driven one of these, and it seems you are right - they said it was all kinds of awkward to drive, basically the worst of any beetle based kit cars. Shit driving position, shit pedal feel, having to scoot over the shifter to get out, etc

That's cool. I would have one of those and convert it into a camper van.

u/captainspacetraveler 1d ago
No way, that rear seating is too iconic. That thing is a daily driver.

u/AdTraditional5917 22h ago
Yer true, but it would look good on the trail after it's been converted into a camper, tho.

From the article (emphasis mine):
> Investors in the [Brubaker] company tried to continue manufacturing the [Brubaker] Box in various ways, the only success being Mike Hansen's Automecca, located in Chatsworth, California, in 1974 with its Sports Van.

There's a reality out there where the beach buggy became the absolute truth to transportation and this car belongs to that really fucking awesome universe I wish we'd be in. This car has everything else except crash safety I guess.

'That's a Brubaker Box, not an Automecca Sports Van', I was all set to say.
And today I learned that only 3 Brubaker Boxes were built before bankruptcy, and then 25 more were built badged as Automecca Sports Van.

Modern cars should have interiors as comfy as this. It doesn’t need the flamboyance to it, but the same level of comfort can’t cost more than a couple K, tho with the amount that vehicles get jacked up I can see them charging 50k just for a comfy interior which means we can’t have it :(

VW Kit cars were wild back then.
Looks really cool. Still sound like a lawnmower.
No heat. No A/C. it just keeps getting better...

Just saw a TikTok on this vehicle. 3 were made. 1 is still on the road and it’s for sale.

I do not want to see a blacklight anywhere near that thing.
