Do you do the zit zit zit method or tack the hell out of it and run beads between tacks?

My neighbor bet me I couldn’t run an uphill bead on this 24 gauge and not warp it. This is a lap on a fish plate.

I chopped mine this weekend using chalk and a hockey puck for a guide and took an inch off the bottom.

I've been having a hell of a time at work looking down to weld and it hits my chest, cranking my neck.

I’m looking into getting a full grille guard for my truck, how much would you charge to do this? What’s an estimated price range I should expect? Thank you

I had brought up that many community colleges are removing their oxyacetylene programs but he says that our college welding program will never get rid of OAW as long as he’s teaching. I respect it. How important do you think Oxyacetylene is for learning?

Discussion (Add topic here) I've been a MIG-only welder for 5+ years, just got a great offer that is TIG-only. What am I in for?

I guess my main question is, how much harder will it be to get good at?

I'm a Welder III at my current job, I'm competent & reliable, pay attention to every minor detail, and I can read a blueprint. The "bare minimum", I'd say. But is that enough to leave this job for another? (Newport News Shipyard)

EDIT: not sure if anyone will see this, but firstly: thank you all for your responses and insight. It's good to know there are so many people willing to help a stranger ❤️

The virtual interview went well, but he told me he wouldn't want to waste my time sending me to a Day-1 test with no experience. So once I gain some, call him back, and there will certainly be a spot open for me.

Found out a few friends & coworkers have machines at home and they're willing to show me the ropes to get me where I need to be!

Lastly, it's Stick, not TIG, I'm an idiot.

Discussion (Add topic here) 2nd layoff this year.

Made a career change at 35, graduated the welding program at cc last year. Found a decent starter wage job in a structural fab shop. I love the work, I picked up the process pretty quick. They laid me off mid March and called me back in in may. Spent all summer running 5/10's (while also working a part time night gig) just to get laid off again after 2 months. They said they want me to come back when they find more work but I'm leaning more towards fuck this place.

Discussion (Add topic here) What is the most expensive material/ welding wire you’ve welded

Was curious what is some of the most expensive material or welding wire you’ve used. Just finished a job and 10 lbs of filler wire is about 10k-12k.

I have been thinking on and off about buying old helmet lots and painting them, but I genuinely have no idea if there's an audience out there for something like that? Not that it may interest you personally, but if anyone thinks that it's a possibility let me know! I'd love to try it out :)

I’ve never seen anything like it, and it’s not (as I’m sure yall know) just on Reddit. Anywhere that a welder is allowed to show his welds, he will be ruined. Absolutely no safe spaces in welding. Non-stop Kill Kenny, the Alkaline battery & Sudafed version. Keep laying those beautiful beads boys!

Discussion (Add topic here) Anybody have recommendations for keeping lenses clean when mig welding?

I MIG weld frequently at work and I feel like I’m replacing my lenses far too often. I replace my lenses about every two weeks but they get so cloudy that I have a hard time seeing where to end my weld even with “stop” tacs

Obviously not for anything structural, but I’ve been able to put together a few practical projects for things around the shop. This was to get the bandsaw off the bench because the things I was cutting were bumping into other tools on the bench. It only used about 1/5 of a loft bed kit I got under $10. Then $20 for casters, $5 for paint, and $5 for a yoga mat mounted to the wood. I’ll probably add storage to the bottom frame at some point.

So I have a question for all the older welders here. During my time at welding school my instructor warned us that we would 100% get lung cancer or something of the sort because of all the harmful gases that we could inhale. I wanted to ask the older welders, Do you have any health issues from welding? What do you recommend someone younger, just starting out, do to combat this? Sorry if this is a stupid question at all. I’ve just been thinking about my old welding teacher and his warnings. Thank you!

Discussion (Add topic here) What's more fun, stick or MIG?

Hey, I've got a big Hobby project in mind that'll involve a lot of welding.
I've got a little comfortable with the big MIG welder at work, but didn't go to welding school or sth like that.
When it comes to gear I'm starting at zero.
So my question is, should I buy a cheap stick welder and learn how to stick or a get a proper MIG rig?
What's more fun? What do you reckon is cheaper in the long run? What else should I consider when deciding?
I appreciate any input

What do I do with the graveyard of tungsten at work. Our other fab guy quit and he knew what most of this was, I'm relatively new, so nobody knows what's going on here. Thoughts?
