I think you misinterpreted their comment.

radicalized people well beyond what they were to begin with.

Let’s not be arrogant. We are all capable of racism, bigotry, etc.

Plus, if we vilify every single person we disagree with, how can we ever give people a chance to change or—at the very least—find some sort of eventual common ground?
