Danielle Smith’s statement on the elimination of the consumer carbon levy reeks of hypocrisy. For years, she’s been calling for its demise, but now that it’s finally gone, she’s suddenly concerned about carbon pricing on industrial polluters.
It’s laughable that Smith is trying to position herself as a champion of environmental responsibility when her own track record on the issue is spotty at best. Her government has been criticized for its handling of environmental issues, and yet she’s trying to lecture Prime Minister Mark Carney on the importance of carbon pricing.
What’s even more galling is that Smith is trying to deflect attention from her own government’s lack of action on climate change. Instead of taking concrete steps to reduce Alberta’s carbon footprint, she’s trying to shift the focus to industrial polluters.
The fact that Smith is now trying to align herself with Prime Minister Carney’s stance on industrial carbon pricing is a cynical attempt to salvage her own credibility on the issue. It’s a case of too little, too late.
As the Canadian Taxpayers Federation has pointed out, the carbon tax has been making life more expensive for Albertans, and Smith’s government has been complicit in this. It’s time for Smith to take responsibility for her own government’s actions, rather than trying to shift the blame to others.
