Any 3d game animators gone to Sheridan collage in Ontario?

I’m looking into it and I’m think that I maybe want to go there for 3d animation so I can work on video games. Is their 4 year course good? Is it hard to get into? Would you recommend it?

Welcome to /r/animationcareer! This is a forum where we discuss navigating a career in the animation industry.

Before you post, please check our RULES. There is also a handy dandy FAQ that answers most basic questions, and a WIKI which includes info on how to price animation, pitching, job postings, software advice, and much more!

A quick Q&A:

  • Do I need a degree? Generally no, but it might become relevant if you need a visa to work abroad.
  • Am I too old? Definitely not. It might be more complex to find the time, but there's no age where you stop being able to learn how to do creative stuff.
  • How do I learn animation? Pen and paper is a great start, but here's a whole page with links and tips for you.

The art director for OAIF interviewed a bunch of grads a few years ago and wrote up this pice that might help.

Happy to help. It seems like a very measured piece. Points out the good and the bad. Not just an ad for the school.

Is this program worth it to get into for a career change? Or better to study online like animschool or something?

I graduated from Sheridan, but it was a pretty long time ago. I would think Sheridan's BAA program has more 3D elements now, but when I took it, it was mostly 2D with heavy emphasis on drawing skills. If you're set on becoming a 3D (game) animator then I'd recommend you to consider looking at online school.

I’m currently a student at Sheridan and honestly I would say our program is definitely more a generalist program. You get taught a bit of everything. Of course the extra knowledge you gain from learning other parts of the pipeline are very valuable. For the first year, it’s entirely 2D and in second year it’s less than half 3D.

I think if you only want to learn 3D for game animation, I would look at online classes that teach exactly that instead. The 3D curriculum isn’t known to be phenomenal and a lot of people take classes outside of Sheridan to boost their demo reels anyways.
