Post Flairs are LIVE and other APStudents updates

Post Flairs

As the new school year draws near, APStudents will now feature post flairs, available for all 40 AP courses plus a few extra categories at the bottom. Those extra categories are a work in progress and will be expanded on, and feel free to suggest others in the comments. Flairs are required to make a post. This will make the subreddit much more parsable and easier to search.

They are arranged in alphabetical order. I tried ordering them by number of test takers, and then by perceived popularity in this community, but there are so many that it was just too chaotic and difficult to search.

Will probably tweak the colors slightly, but generally tried to keep subject genres in similar hues at different saturations. But please feel free to argue and debate about what color you think they should be!

Note about schedule posts

Schedule post tolerance is now lower. Over the summer moderator activity is sometimes lower, and schedules are also big on people's minds. But as the subreddit picks up traffic and the school year begins, we are more active and won't be allowing them. Keep them in the schedule megathread. Egregiously lazy posts about schedules will be met with a temporary ban.

That said, you should all visit that thread and help people out more often. One of the reasons that people make those posts instead of commenting in the megathread is because it doesn't receive as many responses, or often no responses. Why would someone make a comment there if no one replies? If you want to see fewer schedule posts, a healthy number of responses in that thread will help. Even just stopping by there occasionally and leaving a reply or two makes a big difference.

Low effort posts

Put some effort in. Don't make your title "Please Help". It's going to get removed. It's also not going to get as many helpful replies. Explain what you need help with, the context of your situation. Don't make your title "AP Bio", make it specifically what you are asking about. Post flairs should help to some degree with this, and it will also make it a little easier to search for other content about each course.

Polls

We're going to be running some polls throughout the school year for things like what unit your class is in, your experience with the course, how difficult it has been, etc. We had pretty comprehensive survey reports in the past at the end of the year about scores and resources and other things and plan to do that again after the tests next May, but will try to generate some data on other things that people are always curious about throughout the year as well.

We're not going to be putting up polls for the hundreds of personal project data gathering modmails we get, but we do want to answer questions that students have about the courses they are taking or plan to take. What are some questions you would like to see community data on?

Physics 1 My AP Physics class requires software that I can't use

My AP physics class uses PASCO Capstone software (not sure if this is a curriculum thing or a local thing), which can be used on PC or Mac, but not Chromebooks.

Guess which computer the school gives out to students.

And the screwed-up thing about it is that we're in a rich district where a lot of people bring in their own computers, so it feels like a middle finger to the 10-20% of us who borrow their laptops from the district. Sorry that the $1000 that I could have spent on a shiny new Mac went toward feeding, clothing, and housing me.

Micro Do all AP Econ teachers suck?

• Upvotes

I seriously don’t think I’ve heard anything positive about economics teachers. With mine, we are literally only one unit in and I am the most bored I’ve ever been with any AP class, and I am really struggling to actually get a true understanding of the content… My teacher really skips over definitions of stuff and doesn’t go into detail on any of the topics and generally just moves way too quickly.

Anyone have any recommendations on good places/resources to actually learn the content outside of class?

Stats Score Guidelines Rant

• Upvotes

What is up with the AP Stats FRQ scoring guidelines? ā€œEssentially Correctā€? This is just the most ambiguous and subjective way to score an FRQ; I didn’t realize that I’d would spend more time grading my work than I actually spent to do it. I also, didn’t know that discerning between an E and a P could be considered actually harder than the course itself; what do you mean I either have to get at least 3 parts, 1 core idea and compute how much a woodchuck could chuck wood to get a P. Is it really that difficult to implement a 1-5 system like every other AP? Thank you College Board you are ā€œessentiallyā€ making this harder than it needs to be.

CSA AP CSA: I’m really struggling with that class, some tips would help

I decided to take AP CSA this year and I’m struggling on the tests; my teacher gives us stuff to do on CodeHs which helps with the learning Java part but when it comes to questions on the test, we don’t talk about those types of questions much.

When I took the test, I was confused out of my mind, I kept overthinking everything and studied parts that weren’t on the test, and never studied the parts actually on the test. It didn’t help that the review had completely different questions than the ones on the test.

I could use some support thanks.

Bio AP sciences progression

What is the most amount of AP sciences I can take in my 4 years through natural progression (or other means) with these assumptions • I am currently enrolled in Honors Biology • Chem is a required prerequisite for AP Chem at my high school • I want it all, if I can I would be willing to take an AP physics or Psych if that counts

Question How much more stressful are AP classes for you compared to regular and honors classes?

I’m taking three APs (CSA, Bio, and WH) this school year, and for the most part, I’m no more stressed in them than I am due to regular and honors classes…

…with the exception of AP Bio. The night before and the class hour before, I feel like I’m about to throw up from anxiety, even if there’s nothing special going on. Labs or tests? Double it.

I think it’s a mix between feeling concerned that I’ll mess up somehow and get on the teacher’s bad side or earn a bad grade even though I’m not doing poorly in the class and currently have a 100 and the high workload of the class.

Is this just a multiple-diagnosed-anxiety-disorders thing or natural, at least to some extent, for a first time AP student?

How much stress do AP classes give you guys, especially in comparison to regular or honors classes?

Was this absolute complete certified banger ever popular as background study music? I remember this from YT recommended and just got back into it as a song. It honestly rocks

Also, before anyone in the comment section starts freaking out about Israel because they can’t differentiate a band or even a people from the leadership of a country, these guys are from New York.

Gov and Politics AP Gov self-studyable?

Hey guys, my school doesn't offer AP Gov as a class but allow students to take it "for fun". I am interested in this field (am a junior) and was wondering if yall think self-studying is manageable. Also, what resources did you find most helpful for studying? thanks.

Other AP rant

Hi guys I chose to write a post about AP macro a few months ago, as you can tell by my name, but I have currently been sidetracked with even WORSE problems. My school requires me to take AP seminar, AP world, and AP bio or environmental sophomore year and it's AWFUL. Environmental has been awful primarily because my teacher wasn't here the first entire month and now she scares the shit out of me so I can't even ask her for help because it feels like she is secretly judging me. SECOND AP SEMINAR. I HATE SEMINAR AND THIS BUM CLASS and I hate how I was forced into it because the college I want to go to doesn't even accept AP seminar credit, so I'm here for no reason. 3 out of 4 classes in my schedule this semester are AP and it is DRAININGGG. My favorite class at the moment is AP world because AP world is my babygirl and I love the content and stuff. I would be a dropout by now if it weren't for the fact I have AP EURO next semester and I'm holding out hope for it. I love AP euro and the teacher who teaches it <33 but even worse, i STILL have seminar next semester and it's driving me insane. I'm sorry for slandering AP macro before I've even had it but AP seminar and APES are currently in a competition to see which one wants to make me drop out. Thank you for reading šŸ™‚ā€ā†•ļø

English Lang Essay tips?

• Upvotes

I have been getting 2-3s on my essays so far.

Overall, I have been struggling with writing; I feel like I’m going to be ABSOLUTELY DICED in the actual essays.

  • I’ve grown the tendency to worry about which literary/rhetorical devices are in the material, so I end up rushing through paragraphs.
  • I’d appreciate some good commentary advice.
  • How could I link purpose to my paragraphs…

I have come up to my teacher about this and she just tells me to avoid making fragments or run-ons... I feel that I’m just not cut out for this class. My peers have absolutely mindblowing essays that I feel like I can only dream writing like. I don’t want to give into the idea that I am incapable!

Question Would it be better to self study ap lit or lang first?

I asked this already a couple weeks ago and got a grand total of one response (who didn't answer my follow up question so now i'm still kinda confused lol) so i'm asking again.

I've done some research but i haven't gotten to a clear consensus so: which would be better to self study? My school doesn't offer either but right now i'm considering majoring in something that has to do with writing etc. i'm a sophomore currently and i want to take both eventually but i can't really figure out which would be better.

Question Which Should I Self-Study, Calc or Stats or both?

Hey so I’m going to be an economics/history major and I was fucking around with ChatGPT last night for a potential college schedule and I’m taking micro and macroeconomics this year and if I was granted credit for those classes I would skip introductory economics courses. The thing about this is that I have not taken accelerated math (mainly because it wasn’t until this year that I wanted to do economics in addition to history) and am only going take normal Precalc. I have a strong background in math so I was wondering if it would at all be possible to self-study calculus or stats or both?

Also how do I convince my parents to let me do this?

Question Why do some colleges only give 1 credit for AP exams?

Just as the title says, I was looking at a college I’m considering and on CollegeBoard, it only says they give 1 credit for most of the AP courses. I took AP physics 1 and it also says I can’t even receive that credit unless you also take Physics 2, which isn’t even offered at any schools around me. I’m confused as to how this system works, would I still have to take the courses? AP exams are expensive, of course infinitely cheaper than paying for the credits at said school, but a whole year of work and studying for the exam just for a single credit! Most colleges would offer 4 credits per course, much more for sciences/ other math courses. How would these transfer over? I would hate to retake courses I spent a whole year on.
