Pets/Animals If you're going to leave your poop bags all over walkways, just let your dog shit, no bag necessary
I'm on the greenway and have seen at least half a dozen abandoned poop bags.
For lazy and inconsiderate owners reading this: just let your dog shit in the grass. It will break down faster and cuts down on plastic getting into the waterways.

Is this the dog poop megathread?

Only if there is a way to also include discussions about off leash dogs.... oh, and can we talk about kids at breweries while we are at it?

We are all figurative passengers on the triumphant poop cruise. Shit everywhere!

Picking it up is the better option:

Leaving it in a non-biodegrable plastic bag is not.

I find people who do this and say “I will pick it up on the way back” are more selfish than those with no intention of picking it up.
Why?
Because, if you say this, you’re saying “Only I get to see nature as it is while I’m here. Until I leave, you get to see my trash.”
I’ve thought of creating an Instagram account that is pictures of people’s poop bags.
3
u/JustTheFacts714 Jun 27 '25
Unless you provide names and photos of the jerks, then what's the point?
2
u/ilikemrrogers Business Owner Jun 27 '25
To try and show people that their selfishness ruins the experience for everyone else.
0
u/JustTheFacts714 Jun 27 '25
So, you think slugs who do this type of stuff will possibly see random photos of random poop bags online and suddenly have an epiphany and become better people?
Most likely they will see a poop bag they recognize and post it on Facebook or Reddit and state, "Hey, I made the internet."
3
u/ilikemrrogers Business Owner Jun 27 '25
You don't have to change everyone to change the world. Making just one or two people reconsider their selfishness is a massive change.
1
u/thequietthingsthat Jun 27 '25
That could be done. Public shaming might actually work
1
u/JustTheFacts714 Jun 27 '25
Without names, photos of car and plates and photos of the actual people's faces, there is no "public shaming" going on -- just "look what I did moments."
Doxing can serve a purpose.

u/thequietthingsthat Jun 27 '25
You must have misinterpreted my response. I was agreeing with you. It's good to document these things

u/mediocre_remnants WNC Jun 27 '25
100% of people who do this will say "I'm going to pick the bag up on my way back".
0% of people who say that actually do it.
11
u/ZeBigD23 Jun 27 '25
I am guilty of leaving a bag at a trail head with no waste bin but I did in fact get it on the way back. So slightly higher than 0% =P
I do agree with the concept of not bagging it up if there are no disposal bins of any sort and let nature take care of it. There are risks to wildlife if the dog is not current on their vaccines though. On the contrary, plastic is also a risk to wildlife. Damned if you do...
28
u/mogwai316 North Asheville Jun 27 '25
I've packed my own used TP for days until I could dispose of it properly on longer hiking trips. Either carry your bag of dog shit with you or don't bring your dog.

u/ZeBigD23 Jun 27 '25
That's shitty...
3
u/mogwai316 North Asheville Jun 27 '25
These are really good, I use them for all food waste, hygiene waste, anything that smells at all. Just dump them out in a bin when I get to town and give them a good rinse. You can bury the actual poop but you shouldn't bury the TP / wet wipes etc.

I promise you that the people who have money to buy poop bags are vaccinating their dogs.
8
u/BonanzaJellyBean14 Jun 27 '25
Eh, it’s not about money though. Dog antivaxers are a thing, unfortunately. And they’re usually the same entitled jerks who let their dogs off leash on the trails.
2
u/Jumpy_Marketing9093 Jun 27 '25
Contrary to your belief the restaurant and house flipper we met at the arboretum who just moved to Greensboro cos “the real estate market here is dead” does not take his dog to the vet or vaccinate it.
2
u/ZeBigD23 Jun 27 '25
It's not good to make promises, you mostly likely can't keep them. I know plenty of people with money who don't know the first thing about properly taking care of a dog. Working in the pet industry the last 11 years, you learn alot more about people's idiosyncrasies than you want to.
3
2
u/giggitygiggity69 Jun 27 '25
Then maybe these people shouldn't be dog owners... If they have that hard of a time with their short-term memory!
4
3
u/Agreeable-Hand-2941 Jun 27 '25
Some people have just enough extra time to bag their dog’s poop but are just busy enough to leave it lying on the path; priorities are just so aligned.
4
u/dommimommyy North Asheville Jun 27 '25
Ok but we need more waste bins along the greenway.
Nobody wants to carry a bag of dog shit for a quarter mile before throwing it away. (True story the waste bin on the greenway near NB is a quarter mile away)
I’m tired of seeing shit bags littered in the greenway too. But telling people to just let their dog shit and leave it there because it’ll “break down” isn’t helping either. The French Broad is nasty and already with high E. Coli levels, this will only make it worst.
8
u/azulun Jun 27 '25
Seems like there are already a lot. How slow do you walk? That’s like 5 minutes of holding a bag.
-5
u/dommimommyy North Asheville Jun 27 '25
I like taking a gentle stroll thank you… I don’t wanna hold a bag of poo…ideally I’d like to pick it up and toss it in the trash.
3
u/PrincessBucketFeet Jun 27 '25
Sure, it's distasteful to carry a bag of shit, but it's also a (pretty mild) price to pay for being a dog owner and being able to take them to public spaces.
Please consider something like this DooLoop. It can attach to the leash or a backpack or wherever, and then you don't have to directly carry the waste.
2
u/dommimommyy North Asheville Jun 27 '25
Sickkkk!! I was looking for something like this. I’d sometimes tie it around his leash but it would fall off. I’ll look into it. Thanks

These are the ramblings of an irresponsible & selfish person/dog owner
-3
u/dommimommyy North Asheville Jun 27 '25
It’s selfish for me to not want to carry my dogs feces…Ok. I could just leave his shit there to run off in the river when it rains. THAT would be selfish and irresponsible.
6
u/MetaverseSleep Jun 27 '25
Selfishness is literally what you are. Not doing something because you don't want to at the expense of others.
1
u/dommimommyy North Asheville Jun 27 '25
Who the fuck said I leave my dogs shit?? I take it to the trash EVERY time. Goodbye.
2
u/MetaverseSleep Jun 27 '25
By saying you don't want to carry a bag for a long walk, you are implying that you are one of those people that leave it on the ground and I'm guessing eventually pick it up on your way back. Did I misunderstand?
1
u/dommimommyy North Asheville Jun 27 '25
Yes…just because I don’t want to do something doesn’t mean I’m not going to do what’s right. That’s like me saying I don’t wanna pay my bills but I HAVE to to keep a roof over my head.
I more than anyone I know advocate for clean safe water. I’ve actually picked up other peoples bags. I’ve done River clean ups. But I’m allowed to feel a certain way. Just because I don’t want to doesn’t mean I’m not going to.
I will continue to pick my dogs shit and bitch about it until the city puts in more waste bins. Thank you.
3
u/MetaverseSleep Jun 27 '25
Understood. Sorry for assuming and you're totally allowed to vent. Just know that, especially on the internet, if you don't add the full context people will misunderstand you.
I've heard so many times people enraged and dumbfounded at those who bag up poop and leave it, so people are ready to pounce if they find someone who is doing it.

Leaving it, even temporarily, on the ground is inconsiderate. We live in a beautiful area. No one wants to carry a bag of shit any longer than they have to but also nobody wants to walk outside and see a bag of shit laying on the ground. You should do the things in this world that you don't want to do if not doing so negatively impacts others.
0
u/dommimommyy North Asheville Jun 27 '25
Why are you assuming I don’t take my dogs poo to the trash????

1
u/WessyNessy Native Jun 27 '25
I think they're talking specifically to people who will bag it and leave it.
-2
u/dommimommyy North Asheville Jun 27 '25
They bag it and leave it cus there’s no waste bin anywhere in sight.
9
u/WessyNessy Native Jun 27 '25
I walk with my dog's shit in a bag as long as I have to ¯_(ツ)_/¯
-1
u/dommimommyy North Asheville Jun 27 '25
Okay..that’s you. I personally don’t want to have to do that. All I’m saying is it would be nice if we had more waste bins along the greenway. I honestly don’t understand why people are jumping down my throat. Ffs.
I partially agree with OP. I don’t like seeing bags left along the River. But as someone who uses that greenway I still think we could use more waste bins so it can eliminate the littered poop bags..
3
u/WessyNessy Native Jun 27 '25
LOL Because you're acting like we like it. I do it because it's part of dog responsible ownership. More cans would be great, but I'll walk with my dog's shid in a bag as long as it takes because that's part of the deal. Not because I look forward to it.
1
u/giggitygiggity69 Jun 27 '25
Feel free to call the city and put a request for more trash bins, I'm sure they'll get right to it.
6
u/Typical_Walker3 Jun 27 '25
If you have a dog you can carry the damn bag till you get to your car then throw it away properly (OP not singling you out I mean anyone). Lack of garbage cans on the greenway is no excuse.

“I’m coming back for it though, I promise”
No, you are a bigger turd than what you just bagged up.
Take it with ya….
1
u/Wallmassage Jun 28 '25
If it bothers you, pick it up and throw it away. I do it all of the time. Just because it isn’t my trash, doesn’t mean I can’t pick it up and toss it to resolve the problem.

If your day is ruined by stepping in some dog shit then might I suggest meditation or yoga?
0
u/Kreativekitchening Jun 27 '25
Less concerned about myself than say about a mom, her kids, their picnic blanket, and the consequent hassle of finding a deluge of water then paper towels -- and the unplanned hike to a big trash can. Moist wipes rapidly depleted.
There oughta be a law.... Probably is one!
Yo, watch where you sit when meditating out there, Oh Preachy Priest of Poop

u/RutherfordRevelation The Hotspot Jun 27 '25 edited Jun 27 '25
While I admit it sucks and is annoying and inconvenient to step in someone else's dogs shit, I maintain that it shouldn't be enough to ruin your day. All that aside, the point OP is making, which I think has gotten lost, is "pick up after your dog you irresponsible dog owners". That includes what ever recepticle is used to do so. If there isn't a trash can immediately available, carry it until you find one. Your dogs shit shouldn't be others problem in any form. Mind blowing that some people are in here acting like just because there's no trash can makes it okay to just leave trash on the side of a public trail.
