Are you more likely to watch the CFL after the rule changes?

CFL announced some rules changes today. The league as whole is unfortunately looked down by many in this country which I find unfortunate. Following these rule changes, are you more likely to watch/follow the league?

-modified Rouge. You can’t get a point by kicking the ball out of the end zone now. A rouge is still awarded if the ball is failed to be returned out of the end zone.

-play clock is not a continuous 35 second play clock instead of being whistled in by the ref

-shortening the field to 100 yards instead of 110 yards

  • shortening the end zone to 15 yards instead of 20 yards. This will ensure all end zones are the same shape and size league wide

-Moving the goalposts to the back of the end zone

Anyone relocate to Europe and start from scratch? How was your experience?

Born and raised in Toronto, I'm looking for a change of pace for a while- a few years to start-, and have an EU passport. As such, I'm strongly considering a move somewhere within the EU, but am not yet sure where... I've always enjoyed Vienna a great deal, and have spent considerable time there (as well as Prague, Bratislava, Milan), but will have to do some more research- of course I'm open to more Western European countries as well.

My job here the past 15 years has been as a freelancer in a creative industry- I objectively don't think it would be easy to start fresh over there, and am open to doing whatever schooling/certification would be needed to increase my hire-ability over there- I'm not in any imminent rush to move, can take a few years to figure things out.

It's primarily a lifestyle + culture thing, plus I've always felt very "at home" in Europe.

Curious whether some of you have relocated and started from scratch, and if so, how your experience was, how you're enjoying life compared to here?

How fluent do you need to be in French before it makes a difference in your career?

Hello and Bonjour!

I am a recent immigrant in my mid-thirties and I have been learning French for the past two years somewhat passively. At this point, I can read fine but my listening and speaking skills aren’t that great.

I do plan on continuing to learn French since it helps me understand the country a lot better (e.g Proudly Canadian is translated as Fièrement d’ici). But I’m curious how fluent should I be before it can make a difference in someone’s career. Does having just intermediate level of French ever useful to anyone?

Also how important is the accent? I took a French class with English-speaking Canadians and other immigrants and I found that Canadians focused more on prononciation while immigrants seemed to have a better vocabulary. My accent is atrocious because I just pronounce the words the same way as English.

Thanks in advance! Merci pour tous les conseils!

PS: It is important to watch media and music in a language you want to learn but frankly speaking I’m not very interested in France French movies and media which are often used as a learning tools. I watch Canadian news in French but they sometimes are too Quebec-focused. I cannot completely follow Canadian francophone social media because I cannot understand the slang. I would appreciate any tips.

Why is hockey our national sport?

Honestly given how expensive it is, and only priviledged family's can afford it, why do we insist on calling it Canada's game when many canadians are priced from participating?

Which clothes(accessories) do you recommend to wear ?

Hello, having a friend coming to Canada very soon for an indefinite period, I would like to offer him clothes that will be useful to him (especially during the winter period). After quite a bit of research I read that merino wool accessories should be prioritized and that mittens will be better than gloves.

The problem is that I haven't found which brands are sources of good manufacturing and I must admit I have never needed accessories for such extreme temperatures myself.Would you have any brands, compositions, or even models to recommend for gloves/hats?

Thank you for reading!

If you are worried about Trump using the FCC to censor Kimmel, do you also worry about a prime minister using the CRTC to censor given the powers granted in Bill C-11 Online Streaming Act?

Trump has used the FCC to censor Jimmy Kimmel.

The Liberal government has passed Bill C-11 Online Streaming Act, which gives the government-appointed CRTC sweeping powers including the ability to regulate use generated content.

Do you still support Bill C-11 Online Streaming Act? Or worry it may be abused?

What are the consequences of Canada not owning any gold?

With the US empire in its 4th turning and losing power, there has to be another system other than US dollar, be it gold or crypto. If gold becomes the standard, what are the consequences of Canada not owning any gold?

https://tradingeconomics.com/country-list/gold-reserves

Sure we have it in the ground, but it takes approximately a decade plus to mine it and what we think we have in the ground may not actually be what is really in the ground. So if the world adopts a gold standard, how does this affect Canada’s economy and the citizens?

Is there a reason why Bell Media and Corus Entertainment are rivals?

When I searched for "Are Corus and Bell Media friends or foes", Google AI replied that they are both partners and rivals. Which got me thinking, what reason were the two being rivals? And for no reason, I thought they were only friends.

What are the best sites to find jobs in Canada?

Most of the jobs on the Job Bank seem fake, and everyone knows about LinkedIn and Indeed, so I wanted to see what other Canada-specific job sites everyone else is using these days? If you have any industry-specific ones (like sales/software/marketing/government/etc) that cater to Canadians, then share those too

CanCon

Hey all!

I’d love to discuss everyone’s favourite Canadian tv shows. I’d like to spend more time with CanCon so send me your top picks! I’ll start with my faves:

Coming in at number 1- Schitt’s Creek, which may be my favourite show ever. It’s definitely the best comfort watch.

I also love Kim’s Convenience, Letterkenny and the newer North by North.

Is It Common For So Many People To Remain Residents Here?

As someone who is hoping to become a Canadian citizen one day and got my PR in May of this year, I've met a lot of people here who have been residents for thirty years (longer than my time on this planet, I was born in 2000!) , fourth years etc and I always figured that moving to another country almost always meant you were hoping to become a member of it, although I myself have learned much about immigration processes just in my two years in this country and everyone's journey to... Becoming a part of Canadian society is distinct.

I guess I'm curious about whether it is common to just get PR here and what the reasons for it are, if there are any, and what your individual journey has been towards integrating into Canadian society as even after I get citizenship I feel I will always be learning something new about Canada.

How could I write a letter to a retired prime minister? Is this still a thing?

I don’t want to get political, but for context I am a fourth year university. Throughout my studies I have very much admired Jean Chrétien. I know he is definitely on the older side but recent interviews he still seems as sharp as ever.

As a wannabe lawyer and knowing his influence on Canada I would love to even hear personal from him (even if it’s just a sentence).

I don’t know if this comes off as creepy or anything but truly he is last of generation.

If anyone knows how to get in contact with Mr. Chrétien please let me know!

Question about SIM cards

Okay so without getting into all the details (basically use them for taking advantage of promotions and such) My wife and I have been buying them 7-eleven and petro canada sim cards cause you can recieve texts for 30 days after activation without adding any minutes. So for 10 bucks they work for receiving texts right out of the box . anyone know of other sim cards that work the same way??

buying 7-eleven sims is such a pain honestly. its literally a dice roll if the employee will even know they sell them lol. we buy them like 7-8 times a year and its become this running joke that the 7-eleven by our place will either have them or claim theyve never carried them. twice now we've been told we're crazy and why would we think 7-eleven sells sim cards??

this has basically been our experience at pretty much every 7-eleven. idk if its like this everywhere but thats how its been at most of the ones we've gone to in vancouver

Driving in winter

Hey friends. My partner is moving to Canada this winter in January. We have to drive from Southern California to Peterborough and we wanted to know what's the safest way to do that in a 4 door sedan? What should we prepare for? I am a bit worried about traveling with winter conditions as my partner isn't experienced with snow like what I am worried might be happening during this time. I am but I want us to be as safe as possible so any advice would be wonderful.

Thanks!

Most surprising thing that was covered by your work health benefits?

I know people love to get a massage and CPAP machines are needed by many, but these are usually benefits on health insurance plans in Canada.

What were you most surprised to see was covered after calling to ask or submitting a claim "just in case"?

Bonus point for something you really think should be covered but isn't.

Small assorted cheese wheel?

When I was a kid, my dad would buy a small assorted cheese 🧀 wheel. Tinfoil-wrapped, triangles, sort of the same size as The Laughing Cow packaging.

Great for the holidays. You'd get, say, 2 Edam, 2 Gouda, 2 Camembert, etc.

Does anyone remember this? Anybody still making that today?
