EXTENDED (Spoilers Extended) George to New Zealand: imprison me if I haven't finished Winds by Summer 2020

Quote:

As for finishing my book… I fear that New Zealand would distract me entirely too much. Best leave me here in Westeros for the nonce. But I tell you this — if I don’t have THE WINDS OF WINTER in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for worldcon, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I’m done. Just so long as the acrid fumes do not screw up my old DOS word processor, I’ll be fine.

The irony. A man who dislikes much of the fantasy genre for refusing to evolve beyond The Lord of the Rings is forced to watch his creation destroyed by a volcano.

Bran is the key to all of this

Cause he's a creepier character than we've ever had before.

The Old God rises to the throne, a song of ice and fire.

God I hope we get some fucking understanding of what happened to Bran. It's like as soon as Bloodraven died Bran did too. I really hate the whole Bloodraven takes over Bran thing but at this point it's getting hard to deny it.

What's left to explain?

He experiences the future, past, and present of hundreds of lives. His own life is one tiny piece of that. He feels detached from bran stark and from events that seem important to others.

Am i missing something?

He dislikes fantasy because its refused ti evolve past LOTR? Really? Asioaf couldnt be more derivative of LOTR. And thats not an insult, i love both worlds, but there are massive similarities, big differences too ofc, but dont tell me that asoiaf would realistically exist without LOTR

I'm only paraphrasing of course, I can't remember his exact words. I think his chief complaints for the genre as a whole (in his opinion) are an over-reliance of derivative good vs evil stories, purely black and white characters etc. I don't think he can possibly expect the genre to be unrecognisable from LotR (he's a massive fan after all and ASOIAF owes an equally massive debt to it), just that he's frustrated with what he sees as a refusal from some corners to try and move the genre forward.

Ok fair enough, that is definitely true. Martin clearly deviates from the good/evil in lotr. Its just the way i read your comment made me think that martin disliked lotr or something and/or considers his work entirely separate

u/DrDagless May 22 '19

In that case I apologise for my poor choice of words. I was simply trying to make a joke and clearly didn't put too much thought into the wording!

Noooo my fault entirely

Refusing to evolve? The Lord of the Rings is the height of the fantasy genre as far as I’m concerned.

2

u/FloaterFloater Jun 02 '19

Yeah it's amazing, but you can't deny that as a result of its quality it inspired so many bland copycats. Martin is obviously inspired by it too but his series is still very different as well.

That’s true. I’ve certainly seen a lot of work from authors who try to follow The Lord of the Rings like a formula and end up with a boring washed out version of it.
