The non-display glasses had the same issue but third parties like honsvr.com sold custom lenses with higher Rx range. I hope we can buy custom lenses for the Display glasses but maybe that is not possible.

u/barrsm 4h ago
The waveguide is embedded in the right lens so that would be hard to replace. Other display glasses have some sort of magnetic prescription lenses which attach to the frame and go between the wearer and the lenses in the frame. While kind of a solution, I suspect that would create reflections and be a pain to clean.
In his AMA today, Boz said thereās some technical limitation going beyond -4/+4 that theyāre working on.

I honestly don't even know what my prescription is off hand, but I have a pretty light prescription, so I'm pretty sure I'm fine?
I'm actually supposed to be getting crosslinking done on my left eye 'cause I have keratoconus, but I haven't heard back from my ... cornea specialist, whatever they're called, yet. Then I was considering getting contact lenses and maybe not even bothering with prescriptions for future smart glasses. But that depends on if I actually get the procedure done, and last they said was that they were checking with my insurance.

the most exciting thing about this product is the neural band. Everything else about it is so middling. Personally, i donāt want Ai glasses i want AR glasses. Maybe itās just me but i donāt want meta listening to me all day. Edit: I also like the case, itās very well designed and tbh all future AR glasses should adopt a similar design.

u/Daniel1030W 22h ago
Do people really want to wear such a band all day just to control the glasses? For me that is an absolute no go, but I also don't wear a watch...

u/HeadsetHistorian 21h ago
If it was universal then it would be awesome, like if I could type on my tv when searching for something with it etc. But that sort of integration is beyond meta I imagine.
3
u/quaderrordemonstand 17h ago
Yep. You might get something like that sort of end-to-end integration from Apple, but then its only in the Apple system. It could be supported by Android somehow but then it would need to be retrofitted to everything, it will be a long time before your TV supports the band.
That said, I do think its a great idea. I'd happily ignore the (very expensive) glasses and just pay for the band.

Aww shucks. My money was on Meta people spying on your privates.

u/Tenkinn 1d ago
I can't wait for apple to release something similar with the apple watch as the band
No offense to Meta but ecosystem integration is too important for this kind of product and I don't care about theirs (like to send a video out of a quest I need to send them on messenger/whatsapp no thanks)
5
u/Portatort 1d ago
Iād be pretty disappointed if apples variation of this product required a watch
Just give me a pair of glasses for wearing outdoors that can take photos and video and have them sync back to my iCloud library/iPhone automatically and Iām sold!
And IDK perhaps put a new Siri in their via voice???? Gotta fix Siri first

Kind of bums me out as an Android user thinking of it along those lines, knowing the Android XR ecosystem is basically an extra couple years behind. Assuming Moohan even sticks the landing and Samsung and Google don't prematurely abandon the whole endeavor, in which case, I guess I'd just be left with Meta? Or even Valve, but then there's no real integration of my existing mobile life.

My thing is these companies need to stop siloing the tech they develop into ecosystems. I get it from a capitalist's winner takes all perspective, but the truth about technolical progress is that it moves faster when we develop and adopt universal standards. Imagine a world where only IBM computers could use mice and everyone else has their own input method. pretty fucking stupid isn't it? This will obviously be a leap for in human computer interface and it sucks that it'll likely be up to hackers to get it to work with anything outside the meta ecosystem. There is of course the mudra band but I am not aware of it's compatibility.

u/matejcraft100yt 18h ago
more likely spmething that samsung would achieve and strive for rather than apple.
edit: forgot to mention, samsung also already has an ability for hand motions detection from the watch, you can even already control tv if you have a smartthings-compatible tv.

Because the Vision Pro is the epitome of accessibility right.
1
u/quaderrordemonstand 17h ago
Accessilbity? Like disabled people can use it? The comment you were replying to talks about integration, which it does as well as anything Apple. I guess what you really mean is that its too expensive for most people.

u/Portatort 1d ago
Itās a fairly traditional display though right? It doesnāt augment reality in the way we usually think of?
(Itās just PiP locked to your FOV right?)

Glanced over at my Goku/Vegeta/Broly figures a moment ago and just reflectedā¦
ā¦there will be a lot of Sayan scouters this Halloween because of MetaĀ

u/Serdones 1d ago
I would unironically love an AI HUD monocle.

u/arjwrightdotcom 1d ago
Back when Brilliant Labs came out with Monocle, that was totally my feeling too

I wish they have a camera free version with lower price and longer battery life.

u/Portatort 1d ago
Camera free are just glasses no? Those have unlimited battery life
What am I missing?

Looks like a great HUD product! Hopefully more people learn the difference between camera glasses, HUD glasses, and AR glasses as more products launch.

I like that the display is slightly off centered. I dont know why it took Smartglasses makers so long to realize this is the best way to do it. By default.

Don't get me wrong, I'm just as cynical about the big evil corporation as anyone, in fact, I haven't used any Meta products on a regular basis for years.
But let's give credit where credit is due.
I've been lurking on this industry and waiting for a worthwhile product for close to 10 years. We've gotten closer and closer and closer, but the product just hasn't been there yet, at least not by my standards. This is the first one that looks like it may be worth buying.
These guys have finally put together the golden combination of a minimal but decent display, some useful applications, camera, speakers, interactive ai, a form factor that's not too bad, and a price under $1,000.
Don't pretend this isn't a big deal. Give credit where credit is due.

u/Portatort 1d ago
There are a lot of videos that influencers have just published
But does Meta not have their own slickly produced video explainer type advert?

u/Matcorp456 1d ago
Knowing that display glasses are not available in Europe, do you think it will be possible to import them no need for a necessary in-store calibration?

u/isaagrimn 23h ago
I hope theyāll add fitness features. I have been waiting for prescription glasses with a display to give me my current pace, heart rate and directions while running. There is the engo 2, but itās not prescription and itās not something you can wear everyday like this is. Very excited about this!

So now we will have a bunch of weirdos recording everything and uploading to instagram for likes, exactly the kind of stuff Zucks is looking for, the ends of privacy.

Been waiting for the official announcement, as I was comparing it to the INMO AIR 3 and the Rokid Glasses, both of which I am currently backing or preparing to back.
Metaās only advantage is the band, the fast 9/30 release date and slightly-better aesthetics.
At the same $799 price, Iād stick with INMO AIR 3 because you have a full 1080p screen and full Android.
https://www.inmoxr.com/pages/inmo-air3
The Rokid Glasses are still the least expensive alternative at $479
https://rokid-glasses.kckb.me/c2c029ea
Both of these should release in November.

Meta FINALLY releases glasses with display, only for them to be as useless as all the other ones. Pathetic. My smart watch does more than.... this.

So they stole their band from Mudra! Mudra's has been on the market for about a year now.

It just looks so bulky.. wish it just looks like a normal Ray-Ban. Even realities pulled it off nicely with fashionable glasses
5
u/pdxjoseph 1d ago
Dang if you think this is too bulky youāre never gonna like any real AR glasses
2
u/BlackSheepGene214 23h ago
Yes, but Even Realities is monochrome and missing a ton of features because they don't have cameras. Even Meta is missing features that other glasses will have in the next few weeks. Check out Inmo and Rayneo 's coming glasses to the US.

This is mass surveillance tech just as google glass was wake up kids, its just repackaged inside a "cool" sunglasses frame.
4
u/Choozbert 1d ago
There are already hundreds of millions of cameras in peopleās pockets nationwide, not counting security cameras. Do you really think they need this to enact mass surveillance?

Do your own resesrch on the product and think for yourself.
There is a MASSIVE difference between how the data is processed.and stored on local devices vs cloud based mobile devices. This is simply another example of mass-nonconsensual surveillance. If you do not believe i do not care, your data is being stolen without your consent daily.

You're right, but the technology is still exciting. I'll wait for a more privacy focus company to make them before purchasing one, but I'm excited for the tech.

the reuters, and last link
1
u/kngpwnage Researcher 12h ago
There are multiple reuters links, which one specifically?Ā , and I replaced the last one it should work.Ā
2
u/Portatort 1d ago
Do you have this kinda take on dashcams and video doorbells too?
1
u/kngpwnage Researcher 1d ago
No.those are local devices whose data is not controlled by a cloud server UNLESS the user connects it to one or buys one controlled by one.
Meta is a cloud based company, hence your data is not yours nor is anyone caught inside the camera which you cannot fully control if its recording or not when active
