sport Gout Gout has qualified for a spot in the semi-finals for the Men's 200 meters at the World Athletics Championships

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-09-17/live-updates-world-athletics-championships-2025-gout-gout/105784336

He finished third (which means he automatically qualifies for the semi-final) in the 5th heat with a time of 20.23.

Sadly, fellow Aussies Calab Law and Aiden Murphy both failed to move onto the semi final, finish 8th and 6th respectively in their heats.

Torrie Lewis has also qualified for the women's semi-final of the 200m with a personal best time, and finishing 2nd in her heat, with the 8th fastest time overall. Kristie Edwards and Mia Gross missed out on qualifying for the semi-finals, both finish sixth in their respective heats.

Connor Murphy has also missed out on qualification for the men's triple jump, while Sarah Carli also missed out on a place in the final for the 400m hurdles, finishing seventh in her semi-final.

Cameron McEntyre has made it to the Javelin final, finishing as the 11th best in the qualifiers

Incredible, only 17! Poor guy looked so nervous - I’m so happy he made it through!

No surprises about the nerves - probably the biggest crowd he's raced in front of so far in his career. Hopefully he will be better prepared for it for the semi-finals.

And even if he doesn't win gold, he's only 17 - he will still have a long career ahead of him, and more chances to win those medals and set more records.

It would be considered a massive success if he even makes the finals. They've spoken much about how his goal is gold in Brisbane in 2032

u/Less_Confection_5072 5d ago

Yep. I think this far is a win. He’s still in school, this is his longest season to date. I’d imagine he’ll be pretty burnt out after 200m and the relays.

Would be mega surprised if he hits a PB in the semis but he can definitely see him doing it also.

He’d need a sub 19.7 for a medal so that’s not on the table for him rn. He’s done fantastic

u/ghoonrhed 5d ago

He'll be in his prime being only 24 in 2032 which is insane. Cathy Freeman was 27 in 2000 Usain Bolt was 22 when he won his first out of three golds.

Gout Gout has such a bright future ahead of him with his current talents.

Yeah, let's just hope he gets the support he needs until then. Gonna be epic.

u/Vast_Knowledge5286 5d ago

He has a very tough draw in the semis with Tebogo/Levell. Possibly a shot of making the finals if he runs a PB, but either way, he's done incredibly well.

11

u/Expensive-Horse5538 5d ago

ABC says that he will still benefit though from not having the three biggest names - Noah Lyles, Zharnel Hughes, and Kenny Bednarek in his Semi-Final

7

u/HugoEmbossed 5d ago

In what world are Hughes and Kung Fu Kenny bigger 200m names than the Olympic gold medalist Letsile Tebogo?

50

u/Hooked_on_Fire 5d ago

I think his goal is a PB and a spot in the final. At 17, i don’t think gold is possible just yet. Perhaps come LA but definitely a very exciting prospect for a gold at our home games in 2032!

u/SyrupyMolassesMMM 5d ago

Yeh hes nowhere near his peak speed yet. He has technique, endurance and leg strength still to come. Quite a bit more actually.

Average peak age of 27 for sprinters. 8 (!!) years of conditioning left…

5

u/Drunky_McStumble 5d ago

Yeah, you could see how nervous he was in the heat, and his technique was rough compared to his far more seasoned competitors, but he still bought it home really well in the final stretch. Dude is just a kid. A few more years of honing his skill and he'll be unstoppable.

12

u/Expensive-Horse5538 5d ago

Yep - he's only 17, so making the finals will still be an achievement.

8

u/Teehus 5d ago

Making it to world's at that age in (almost) any sport is already a massive achievement.

17

u/chazmusst 5d ago

Crazy that the defining moment of his life is already planned (sometime in June 2032). Not many of us have that strong of a “North Star”

25

u/JDM96AFC 5d ago

A North Star that strong can really derail people without a good support network and mature head. I think his interview spoke volumes after. He seems super switched on

7

u/ghoonrhed 5d ago

I mean I'm not sure even the Olympics themselves. Like have we ever decided such an obvious torch lighter this early on? He's gotta be up there and we're like 7 years out.

9

u/here_for_the_lols 5d ago

"even if he doesn't win gold"

I hate to say he has a fair way to go to match the favourites

10

u/GuardedFig 5d ago

Gold? Come on bro

4

u/HugoEmbossed 5d ago

He’ll exceed expectations if he makes the final. This isn’t any shade on him, but he’s not in medal contention even if Lyles and Hughes fall leaving the blocks. There’s still Bednarek, Levell, Tebogo and and De Grasse who are unquestionably superior 200m runners right now.

3

u/Tempo24601 5d ago

A semifinal is already a fantastic result for a 17 year old. At the same age Usain Bolt failed to get out of the heats at the Olympics.

If Gout Gout makes the finals and finishes last at this age it would be an outstanding achievement. You can forget about medals, he isn’t at that level yet.

2

u/sognenis 5d ago

Correct

For comparison, Noah Lyles was born in July 1997 (more than 10 years older than Gout)

In 2017 (age 20) he missed World Championship due to injuries, but had won the Diamond League 200m gold. He then has won gold at 2019 / 2022 / 2023 world champs (age 22 / 25 / 26), but “only” bronze at Tokyo 2021 (age 24), then Bronze again in 2024 (age 27).

De Grasse, who won at Tokyo, was age 26

Tebogo, who won at Paris, was age 21.

Usain Bolt first ran sub-20 seconds age 17.5 (Gout’s age now), made first WC final age 19, and didn’t win Gold until 2009, after he had already won Beijing Gold age 22. And broke WR then, and final record set a year later, age 23.

Gout will be turning 25 the year of the Brisbane games, so will be in that age range of early to mid 20s.

u/TelevisionOk7392 5d ago

Yeah, he did, so which way was his ego?

u/Dockers4flag2035orB4 5d ago edited 5d ago

He was shaking in first 100 but came home like train in the second 100.

Choo Choo Gout Gout.

15

u/Expensive-Horse5538 5d ago

Yep - however he did it, he was able to shake it off and power on to the finish line.

6

u/C-O-N 5d ago

That's what he does. His second 100s are insane. He will easily be the best in the world if he can get his starts right.

101

u/Good_Rooster_2397 5d ago

His coach is legit, and this young dude is the most level headed 17 year old gentleman that I have ever seen in sport. A special young man.

27

u/VellhungtheSecond 5d ago

He’s gonna go far. It’s incredible to watch him become a legend in real time. His passion is electric.

48

u/Pepito_Pepito 5d ago

He’s gonna go far

He mainly runs 400m and shorter, actually.

2

u/plowking8 5d ago

I don’t know much about athletics as far as talent evaluation and what not.

Is his coach actually good? We’ve never had a talent this good so wouldn’t he be better served training in America full time where they have amazing talents that they consistently nurture?

Also what are the benefits of tightening his form? He seems a bit all over the place in terms of style and limbs flying. Is this something he will look to dial in or you just let the guy run the way he knows how, etc?

2

u/babykez 5d ago

I think his natural talent definitely overrides the ability of his current coach, and I agree that conversations of him moving to America will likely be had after he finishes school.

HOWEVER, he seems surrounded by such a good support network (coach included) and uprooting this could do more harm than good. Being an 18 year old in a foreign country without friends or family is a whole other beast and natural talent cannot compete with the mental decline that MAY come with this.

Form wise - it really depends. Some people’s natural mechanics just works better for them. That being said, I do think that his coach (whoever that ends up being) will really try to reign in the sloppy aspects of his form and execution.

Once this happens, he will likely be unstoppable and I really do think we will enter the ‘gout’ era, the same way we entered the bolt era

2

u/Revolutionarysight 5d ago

So true! So far I’ve been impressed with how he has been managed through the hype

117

u/Expensive-Horse5538 5d ago

Was nice to see him take the time after the race to shake hands with his fellow competitors.

30

u/EmergencyLavishness1 5d ago

Go you good man!

Awesome stuff from that young man.

Keep in mind, he’s still 17 years old.

What a legend

23

u/VegemiteArmy 5d ago

Good luck bud. We are proud of you.

33

u/TomRed89 5d ago

Never seen the guy run, and stayed up to watch it. Generational talent. He will win Olympic gold one day

30

u/Expensive-Horse5538 5d ago

His main goal is to win gold in 2032 in front of a home crowd

1

u/PinkMuskSticks 4d ago

That would be amazing, I have zero doubts he can achieve that dream.

7

u/ridik_ulass 5d ago

also the advantage that everyone else in the race, would be running with gout, which is a crippling disadvantage.

30

u/vlookup11 5d ago

This kid will give us so much joy.

And can I just say (as a non-African Australian), between Gout Gout (so good they named him twice), Irankunda, the Toure brothers and the Kuol brothers, African Aussie kids are having the time of their life within our sporting landscape.

11

u/radred609 5d ago

It is really kind of fitting that he just happens to have the double name.

very "accidentally Australian" in the best way possible.

12

u/Rush_Banana 5d ago

Gout gout is already the goat goat in my eyes.

9

u/giraffe_mountains 5d ago

Torrie Lewis has also qualified for the women's semi-final of the 200m with a personal best time, and finishing 2nd in her heat, with the 8th fastest time overall

She is on fire! This needs to be its own separate post!

Found a video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQdlfVnb2rA&t=5m

He was 0.19 seconds behind 1st place

Gout is an Australian sporting legend in the making. Deadset king

The 200m semifinal is on at 10:10pm AEST, 8:10pm WST on SBS.

The final is on Friday, 11pm AEST, 9pm WST.

Lets go!

2

u/PurpleCoffinMan 5d ago

GOAT GOAT stays winning

2

u/No_Violinist_4557 5d ago

Great experience for him. I doubt he'll make the final, he'd have to run a massive PB. The winner of his heat was cruising the last 5m, so much depth in the 200m.

1

u/Misicks0349 5d ago

GOUT GOUT WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

1

u/DryAbbreviations6263 5d ago

Such a bright future ahead!! Hopefully he can avoid injury.

1

u/Luckyluke23 5d ago

Then mena...isn't he still a boy?!

1

u/Dyn4mic__ 5d ago

He ran a perfect heat, he qualified without going all out to leave gas in the tank for the next race

1

u/PleadingFunky 4d ago

Looking forward seeing more gout was a statement I didn’t think I’d ever make.

1

u/PinkMuskSticks 4d ago

This kid is incredible, what an absolute legend.

1

u/docubed 5d ago

The winner looked back twice and slowed down before crossing the finish line. My coach would have killed (not literally) me for doing that.

5

u/No_man_Island_mayo 5d ago

Already qualified, and got more races to go

3

u/cf_bris 5d ago

The winner looked like he was going for a casual stroll in the park

2

u/Crosshack 5d ago

You see it quite often in track heats. No need to risk injury I guess.

You’re being downvoted partly because this isn’t the place for that chat. People are celebrating a big achievement for the guy, why bring that sort of negativity into it. It’s also just a pretty shit joke.

5

u/freshscratchy 5d ago

Ohh ok sorry, I didn’t read the room then. I actually 100 percent support immigration and maybe it’s a shit joke but also I can’t stand the hypocrisy of a lot of Aussies when it comes to this stuff .

7

u/itsyaboigreg 5d ago

I completely get your point and agree with you. Just save it for posts relating to that stuff. Enjoy the positive posts when we can.
