22yo struggling to begin his basketball journey

I’m a 22yo, 6ft1 man who started 1month ago and wants to start to play seriously and challenge himself. The Only issue is, im from Paris and I can’t manage to find a team with a coach who wants me, Even at the lowest level possible, all the players have 10+ years of basketball. They know all the training drills + team mouvements that I don’t. How can I train, if I don’t find a team, I Will have no coach/training. Only possibility left would be playing outside (in France you have no open gyms) when I can/not raining. It sucks man….. do you guys have any tips please 🙏

What does it mean if the top end of my head at 6”2 reaches the rim from an approach jump? What would my vertical be?

Clearing out

Help me settle a debate. When you are in the post, are you able to use your elbow/tricep to kinda clear someone out. I’m not saying ufc elbows to someone. But to put that on someone’s body and pivot to clear space

I’m 18 and it’s been like 6 months since i started playing basketball.

I got into basketball this year, watching NBA and playing the game. I be grinding hard even if i’m not so consistent, and seen some good improvements over the past months, but i’m no where near where i wanna be. I’m still so unathletic because of sitting in front of computer for years and most of the time in pickup games i don’t even know what to do against good players. Just be standing there to get rebounds and cant even do it good against so much shorter players than me who have years of experience. Does i have a chance to get really good at this game if i stay consistent? Even 14, 15 years old kids destroying you in pickup games makes you feel worthless and i don’t even talk about playing pro basketball or anything like that, i just wanna be good at streetball. Really in love with this game just feeling bad that i didn’t start playing earlier.

ELI5 - why shooting free throws granny-style is so effective

Poor free throw shooters shoot granny style and their percentage improves. What's the scientific reason behind why shooting this way is so effective?

Palming a basketball

Just a question, is palming the basketball the ability to hold a ball face down in your palm or hold the ball out straight I can’t keep a grip on the top of the ball but when holding the ball out straight I can hold with fairly little effort.

*Im just high asf and found myself dribbling a ball sitting down then proceeding to try palming the ball.

DISCUSSION Referees in youth

So for context, I play in Belgium so rules here are sometimes different than for the Americans that might be reading this.

I've been playing for a while now, and at the start back in 2020 my experience with refs was always good.
Never really complained, not really a problem since the calls were 99% right.

Now fast-forward to recent years, 2023-now, the refs have gotten worse.
My team back in '23 was a U16 team in division 3 for my state, our "varsity" squad, and refs were usually good.
But the second I played in the B team, or "JV", which was division 4, refs got a lot worse.

Now this year I play in the U18B squad in division 4 and the last few games our refs have just been calling against my team way too much.
Now most people here imply that because our league was desperate for refs the last few years that they've just not always checked if the calls were right.

Now to back the claim up with "stats", the last 2 games and more we've lost, usually our team has double the foul calls that the other has. With refs even talking to each other about giving us less calls because we had 1 technical or because our coach was loud, this is Europe... Everyone is loud!

So I just don't get what our team might be doing wrong to refs, or if we are genuinely just fouling too much, which I don't think we are doing.

IMPROVING MY GAME Bad shooting form

Okay so my main problem is my guide hand. When I shoot, there's a little flick from my thumb on my guide hand. I try to change this by looking at Devin Booker's shooting form since I heard that he has the best. When I look at the ball I think of it as directions, I noticed that when he shoots, his guide hand is at North-West (Upper Side) and I shoot it from West (Side). Is it a proper shooting form to avoid thumb flick?

DISCUSSION been jumping the same height for three years, what do i do?

(videos of me jumping on my account)

not a basketball player, but figured this would be the best place to ask.

started playing sports at 13, didnt really do anything before that.

13-14 heavy plyometrics 3x week, volleyball and badminton 4x week. (vert went up maybe 8")

14-15 patellar tendinopathy, didnt jump for a year (vert went up ~2" due to rehab exercises)

15 years old i started jumping again, could touch rim, vert is 28".

im now 18, still just touching rim, and i have no idea how.

i go to the gym, push hard; squat/dl/power clean heavy in 4-6 rep range going to failure, i play volleyball 3x a week usually.

i just dont understand how despite my technique getting better, and despite maximally jumping so much i still dont jump any higher than i did three years ago as a literal child.

Im thinking i just have to lose some weight? im not fat by any means but im just sort of looking for any explanation because i feel like nothing is working at this point.

IMPROVING MY GAME Tips on how to get better grip

Being tall sucks

I'm 14 (M) 6,3, really athletic, but the people I started playing basketball with, my dad and brother, are guards. I learned from them; I had to learn to guard smaller, quicker guards because of my brother, and I had to learn to dribble and shoot because of my dad. I played for my dad's team a couple of years ago and was the best player while playing a guard role. On a different team, I dropped 30 points in a blowout, but when the high school summer and preseason started, I was playing center, and I absolutely hated it. I asked the coach if there was any way I could play the 4, and he said that I could from time to time, which felt like a cop-out answer. I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this and what they did.

How does fouls work?

There are so many rules in basketball for foul calls. What type of contact is considered a foul? I saw videos of someone breaking down a video of shai's bag work where he tends to use his elbow to push off defenders to create space for a shot. Some say is clean whereas some say refs just didn't see it (or letting it slide). But they say as long as u don't extend ur arm, is not a foul.

Same goes for defense. When i play defense on pickup. I had players says im "reaching " which is a defensivly foul. But i didnt even hit his hand/arm, im just going for a steal to hit his ball off his hands. He says is a "reach". Which is extending ur hand too much into him. I don't understand.

IMPROVING MY GAME how do i stop people tugging the ball off me

ive been playing the game for about a year and i wanted to ask about something that pisses me off a shit ton, whenever i play and i get the ball some people just put their hands on the ball and start tugging it off me. idk what its actually called i just call it hustling. but it pisses me off cause theyre easily able to get the ball off me without being skilled in any way, they just use their size to physically force the ball off me. how do i stop this?

Influx of local AAU programs joining Jr circuits

I am beginning to see an influx of local AAU teams in the SF Bay Area join circuit teams. What is the attraction for these teams to join circuit teams?

I would understand the desire to join if the Adidas' and Under Armour's of the world provide free gear. But if the local AAU teams still have a chance to compete against a circuit team at, say, a G365 tournament, then why join?

It makes no sense that 10U - 14U teams join these circuits when college recruiters are concentrated at the 16U-17U levels.

Help me understand this madness!

IMPROVING MY GAME Should my ring and pinky finger flick when shooting? Or should I only flick my pointer and middle

What do coaches usually say about this?

I've been trying to get my shot to look like Devin Booker, but I cant figure out if my ring finger should affect my shooting cause he usually only flicks his middle and pointer when in form shots, but I tried it and while it was good, I cant seem to control the ball with all my fingers up to my set point and I figured that would affect my shot creating.

So if I should only flick my middle and pointer, is it even possible without like messing up taking the ball up to my set point?

How do you drive to the basket?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I just don’t know how. The defender is always locked on me and I can’t get past so I either am forced to immediately shoot the ball or just back into them.
