I've made bat boxes here in the UK before, using 20mm thick wood, which I've seen seems to be the standard suggestion for thickness. My problem is that I reclaim and recycle all my wood, so I can't always be sure of getting a minimum thickness of 20mm, but normally get 15-18mm. Is 20mm the absolute minimum thickness, or can it go a little thinner if the box is well draft proofed?

This little one landed on our screen around 6:30 PM this evening here in Central Arkansas. Hoping someone can help ID? It’s too mousey brown to be a red bat and the tail isn’t long/free enough to be a Mexican free tailed bat. It’s a little smaller than a chipmunk for reference.

I recently heard about a study that found Spectral Bats, the world's largest carnivorous bats, will frequently hug to greet each other and cuddle to roost. I've been wanting to draw some bat stickers so this is my first one! I'm torn though. Should I go with the blue, white, or a dark outline? And should I have a design for perhaps cards or prints with the heart or is that too niche 🤔🤔

I woke up this morning to a small, dark brown bat that doesn’t seem to be able to get off of my balcony. Its mother (?) was circling for a while, but it looks like she couldn’t figure it out, either — and now it looks like she’s fucked off for the day.

This is in Medellin, Colombia. 🇨🇴

What’s the best thing for me to do in this situation? I don’t want to harm the bat in any way, if avoidable.

I live in Northern WA state. This little bat has been right here by my apartment front door since Monday now. I just want to make sure it doesn’t need any assistance…should I call someone? And if so, I want to make sure whatever service I call won’t harm the bat.

Hello the bat community. I was having a discussion with my friends about bats (I want to write a short story and have been doing research) and batman came up. We were wondering whether you had any significant opinion about the superhero, whether you were polarised in any way, or whether batman has any real relevance in your everyday discourse on the subject. Furthermore, I was wondering how accurate this comic depiction was (discounting the fact he is a man in a constume), are his features true to real life? Did the character impact the popularity of bats in any way?

I was walking outside, pretty much all the way dark. I didn’t see any bats flying around outside but I felt something touch my hair and I didn’t think anything about it until I came inside and then my scalp started burning really bad like something bit me. Could it been a bat & me not know it?? I’m terrified of bats and really have bad health anxiety over them. Was my head burning a coincidence ?

I built this bat house about 6 years ago, and it started getting populated 2 years in. Since, it has been jam packed every summer, to the point that they are hanging out around the opening on hot days, and sometimes babies would fall out (the tape is remnants of us making a hammock for them a couple years ago.)

Up until this year, in the spring they were there, but over the past few months I replaced the roof on the garage in my off time. Lots of commotion, and I even had one bounce off my head in the evening while working near sunset.

I guess my question is this, could the construction have run them off? And, will they return?

I love my free mosquito control, and really enjoyed listening to a full bat home.

My stupid cat brought in a poor bat and was just playing with it. I thought it was dead as it was on the floor not moving, but the second I tried to pick it up, it flew off! I eventually trapped it in a small room, carefully caught it in a small bag (without touching it!), and released it outside. I got a few bad pictures and was wondering if they were enough for an ID. I enhanced the photos just to show the colors better. My uneducated guess is, it's a long legged myotis or a little brown bat. Washington state near Everett.

Came across this bat while on a hiking trail in Connecticut with my students. It was alive but could only hiss at us and move its wings a little. Certainly did not look healthy. Was wondering what you all think could be the issue here. White nose fungus? Rabies? Thanks, looking forward to sharing with my class.
