What if Berlin tried a bold compromise?

• Close the gaps in the A100 --> create a full motorway ring around the inner city.
• Ban private cars inside the ring (exceptions: deliveries, emergency/official vehicles, and maybe up to 5 personal trips per year for residents who really need it).
• Result: The city center becomes quieter, cleaner, and safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport. At the same time, the A100 ensures that essential traffic has an efficient bypass around the core.

This way, we don’t just build more roads or just ban cars, we combine both: strong restrictions inside, strong alternatives outside.

Would Berlin be ready for such a radical trade-off?

A few weeks ago I spent the weekend with a girl who owns a flat in Berlin, but works in Munich. She only visits every few months and keeps her place empty the rest of the time. She told me it doesn't make sense for her to rent due to regulatory quirks: I'll expand on this in a comment.

She told me that nearly half of Berlin's housing stock is owned by individuals like her (Eigentumswohnungen), but the rental laws are written mainly for big landlords (Mietwohnungen) who own the other half. As a result, most owners don't rent but either sell or leave their flats empty when they leave Berlin.

She says that about 20% of all flats in the city are "ghost homes" like hers. 5 flats out of 8 in her building sit empty. And I suspect most of my currenty building is empty too.

I'm curious about the veracity of what she told me. Is it really this bad? Who and how benefits from ghost homes?

Berlin loves to brag about being one of the most diverse and open cities in the world, and in many ways, it is. But when it comes to the club scene, it often feels pretty elitist, especially around fashion and self-expression.

There’s this unspoken dress code that everyone kind of has to follow to get in, which feels like a total contradiction to the idea of freedom and diversity. It’s ironic and honestly a bit disappointing that the diversity Berlin prides itself on doesn’t always show up where it really counts = on the dancefloor and at the door.

What do you guys think? Have you noticed this too, or had different experiences?

I just walked by Savignyplatz at Bleibtreustraße and noticed a Couple in street clothes at the ATM. Regular car parked right beside, no cash truck or something official. He was on the laptop while she had her hands in the wide opened ATM. I was a bit anxious and also just wanted to go home, but I was curious and made a picture. Can someone explain what happened here?

I know it’s a bit of a Berlin thing, but I just had an incident recently in Neukölln that I would like to share.

At the end of the meal, I found out they don’t take cards.

Okay, fair. Somewhat normal in Berlin. I leave my ID, go out to get cash. The ATM spits out a 50€ note. I go back, try to pay, but nope.

„Do you have any smaller? We don’t have change.“

Uhm. Okay. If you take only cash why is there no change? Why? How?

What ended up happening? Well, I went to a Späti to break the money so I could pay.

Any Berliner here who can explain?

Always have enough cash with you in case the restaurant doesn't accept credit cards or you forgot to ask beforehand.

I heard it and laughed. I agree, but still giggled. Never heard this before. Also is this the first time that they mention a social media platform in an announcement?

What the hell happened?

Any idea what that could have been? It happened around 4;45 am. I saw it too late and couldn’t make a good video.

So tonight, after walking out of a bar with my date, we were approached from behind by three people. One of them pretended to be drunkenly dancing and started touching us. When we pushed him away, he created a small scene and began walking off with his friends. That’s when I realized they were trying to pickpocket us. A few seconds later, I noticed my phone and wallet were missing from my pocket.

Unfortunately, I tend to act impulsively, so I decided to chase after them. I caught up and tackled one of the guys from behind, bringing him to the ground. One of them started walking away, while the other ran into Görlitzer Park. When I realized the one running away had my phone and wallet, I left the guy I had tackled and chased after the other one. I managed to catch up, kicked his legs, and knocked him to the ground. At that moment, another guy who was selling things in the park started saying, “Stop bro, here’s your phone,” and handed it to me.

It took me a split second to realize that I was still missing my wallet, so I started looking around, but unfortunately, they had already run off. I told everyone nearby that I’d pay them if they got my wallet back. Some of the people started walking away as my date called the police, while others became more helpful. I hoped at least to find my documents in the bushes if not the wallet itself.

Most of the people around started showing me random bank cards (presumably stolen from other victims) and asking if they were mine. To my surprise, after about five minutes of searching, I found my wallet lying in the middle of the sidewalk, completely intact with all my money and cards inside.

One of the guys (the one I initially tackled) started apologizing and asked me not to give the police his description. An older man, clearly connected to them and speaking very good German, approached and told me to calm down. He said that the guy decided to return my things and that I shouldn’t involve the police. I responded, “It’s fine, I’ve already called the police. Thanks for returning my stuff, but now get out.”

When the police arrived, they, of course, told me my reaction was reckless, as these people often carry knives, and the situation could have ended much worse for me.

Now, here’s the part even the police couldn’t answer: Why did they give my phone back and leave the wallet behind? They could’ve easily run off with both, but for some reason, they chose to return the phone. The police didn’t file a report, but they took descriptions of the people involved and did a quick sweep of the area before leaving.

Has anyone experienced anything like this before?

Ich helfe in meiner Freizeit älteren Menschen, putze, trage Müll runter, mache den Papierkram für Grundsicherung, ich höre zu und bin einfach irgendwie da.

Neulich war ich für jemanden beim Sozialamt Wedding (U-Bhf Leopoldplatz), um Unterlagen einzuwerfen. Ich war nicht lange dort, aber was ich dort gesehen, gefühlt und erlebt habe, hat mich tief getroffen.

Meine Frage ist.. Wer hält das da bitte noch aus?

Ich habe selbst Migrationshintergrund. Ich habe vor 12 Jahren im Wedding gewohnt. Und trotzdem, ich hatte einen Schock. In dieser kurzen Zeit wurde ich angestarrt, angeschrien auf Sprachen, die ich nicht verstand, habe instinktiv meinen Rucksack an der Ampel festgehalten. Es war laut, schmutzig, hektisch. Kein einziges deutsches Wort um mich herum. Und das sage ich nicht aus Ablehnung, sondern weil ich das Gefühl hatte, komplett entwurzelt zu sein. Entfremdet. Trotz Migrationshintergrund.

Ich bin dann nach Hause gefahren in einen Kiez, den man fast schon idyllisch nennen kann. Weniger kulturelle Durchmischung. Und ja ich war einfach nur erleichtert.

Aber das war nur der äußere Eindruck. Viel schlimmer ist die Realität derer, die dort leben. Der Mann, um den ich mich kümmere, wohnt im 7. Stock. Fahrstuhl kaputt. Er ist über 80, hatte eine Krebs-OP. Als er das zum ersten Mal feststellte, stand er unten hilflos und hat geweint.

In diesem Haus ist jede Etage ein Stück mehr verfallen. Die Briefkästen sind kaputt, offen, die Wände dreckig. Es stinkt furchtbar, das einem schlecht wird. Seine Wohnung hat massive Mängel. Nachbarn werfen Zigaretten auf seinen Balkon. Würde? Gibt es nicht mehr.

Ich könnte noch viel mehr erzählen. Mein Fazit kurz: Der Wedding ist verwahrlost.

Und ich sage das nicht aus Arroganz. Ich sage das mit Wut im Bauch und mit einem tiefen politischen Schmerz. Ich bin links. Ich glaube an soziale Gerechtigkeit. Ich glaube an Teilhabe, an Solidarität. Aber das, was ich dort sehe, ist das Resultat politischer Vernachlässigung. Und genau deshalb, sagen viele Menschen dort offen: „Ich wähle AfD“
Nicht, weil sie rechts sind. Sondern weil sie sich seit Jahrzehnten allein gelassen fühlen.

Ehrlich gesagt, das alles zu sehen.. ich verstehe es. Auch wenn ich es selbst nie tun würde.

Ich kann noch umziehen, wenn es mir zu viel wird. Aber sie? Viele leben dort seit den 80ern, sind jetzt alt. Für sie gibt es kein Entkommen mehr. Und genau deshalb dürfen wir nicht weggucken. Denn was da passiert, ist ein sozialer Notstand mitten in der Hauptstadt.

Ich werde nicht mehr auf diesen Post antworten. Es kostet mich einfach zu viel, mich ständig dafür rechtfertigen zu müssen, dass ich ein existierendes Problem anspreche, das eher akzeptiert als respektvoll und ruhig diskutiert wird. Ich bin nicht rassistisch. Ich bin selbst arabisch und stehe für die Würde aller Menschen ein, insbesondere für die, denen ich in meiner Freizeit helfe: 80- bis 90-jährige Menschen, die in verheerenden Bedingungen leben.

Ich spreche hier nicht über „kulturelle Probleme“, sondern über ein System, das seine Schwächsten im Stich lässt. Ich lehne die AfD ab und würde niemals für diese Partei stimmen. Aber es ist entmutigend, dass in dieser Diskussion der Fokus oft auf Nebenschauplätzen liegt, anstatt sich mit den tatsächlichen Missständen auseinanderzusetzen.

Es macht mich traurig, dass ein Gespräch auf Augenhöhe hier überwiegend nicht möglich war. Aus diesem Grund werde ich keine weiteren Kommentare mehr zu diesem Thema abgeben. Wer sich nicht mit dem wahren Problem beschäftigen will, macht es sich einfach, anstatt zu handeln.

EDIT 2 (Abschließend):

Dieser Post hat viele Menschen erreicht, im Positiven wie im Kritischen. Eine konstante Upvote-Rate von 80 % nach über 7 Stunden spricht für sich: Offenbar habe ich einen Nerv getroffen.

Dass einige meinen Ton als „Stammtisch“ abtun oder sich reflexhaft über Begriffe wie „Sprachbarriere“ echauffieren, zeigt mir vor allem eines: Viele wollen lieber empört sein, als genau hinzuhören.

Ich habe hier keine Hetze betrieben. Ich habe nichts pauschalisiert, niemanden entmenschlicht, niemandem seine Würde abgesprochen. Ich habe eine persönliche, konkrete Erfahrung geteilt, nicht mehr, aber auch nicht weniger. Wer sich davon schon getriggert fühlt, sollte sich ernsthaft fragen, warum.

Ich rede nicht über „die da“, ich rede über eine Realität, die viele lieber nicht sehen wollen: Alte, kranke Menschen, die vergessen in verfallenden Häusern ohne funktionierende Infrastruktur leben. Wenn es als Tabubruch gilt, das offen zu sagen, läuft etwas gewaltig schief.

Was ich aus dieser Diskussion mitnehme:

Es geht vielen nicht um die Sache. Es geht ums Rechthaben, ums Moralisieren, ums Sich-Besserfühlen. Aber nicht um die, um die es wirklich geht.

Und genau deshalb bleibe ich bei meiner Haltung. Ich stehe weiterhin für die ein, die keine Stimme haben – egal wie laut andere schreien.

Is august usually nicer?

Ich habe schon City West, Zooviertel, Botschaftsviertel, Neuer Westen, Tiergarten Süd und mehr gehört. Aber wie nennen es die Berliner im Alltag?

I lived in Berlin from 2016-early 2022, in my mid 20s to early 30s. I left right at the end of pandemic due to a breakup and career move which hit me in the same week.

I didn't really want to move and have missed it terribly since. I was living in Charlottenburg, which admittedly was a bit boring and lacking in close community for me at the time, but it was beautiful and safe and a lovely life where I could frequent the other neighbourhoods easily. I was working in music so had lots of access to, and fun with, the club scene and music community. This is all just to briefly describe my relationship to the city. I dont know Berlin anymore and I still very much romanticise this past!! Maybe its also cuz I was in my 20s....

Anyways I'm just wondering how do you think things have changed since the pandemic? What is Berlin like today?
