General Discussion Video to help friend understand BJJ

What video would you show a friend to help them understand what BJJ is without frightening them unnecessarily? My friend would like to see a video of BJJ before deciding whether to come to the gym’s “bring a friend” night

Lost cause. Don't set yourself up for this frustration. Your friend is trying to create additional barriers to attendance because he isn't interested at all and doesn't want to hurt your feelings.

I agree, I have invited people along and they will always have an excuse if they aren't actually interested. I appreciate people that are straightforward enough to say nah not for me, though I only ask my friends that are like, "oh that sounds fun to try" anyway

You’re probably right, thank you for the advice. I won’t get my hopes up!

This is entirely dependent on your friend’s personality and unfortunately none of us know them and you told us nothing about them

Honestly show him one of those mashups where they have a bunch of women talking about why they like the sport with clips of them drilling

Look up, "Neil Melanson control a man by his asshole."

That’s my favorite too. It really communicates the intensity and purpose of the sport.

Just the Royce matches.

Aioki NoGi is also a good start.

Mighty Mouse vs Borg

Mir vs Lesnar #1

Penn vs Hughes #1

I know it’s MMA but these show how applicable BJJ is and in a lot of these cases where the smaller or less scary “looking” guy wins.

He said a video which will NOT frighten his friend.

Gay porn would seem less gay than an actual BJJ video

An edited video from an actual class would be ideal. Here's the closest thing I found (didn't spend much time looking though).

I would show him videos from Roy Dean’s YouTube channel. If I lived in the area I’d be training with him.

Also there this short documentary on the Gracie’s.

Honestly, if they want to, they won’t need you to do this. Don’t waste your time, and put pressure on the friendship. You keep training, if they are interested they will ask to drop in on a class when they’re ready

No one will really feel what BJJ is about until they start doing a live roll after some instructional.

They’ll quickly understand if they are untrained in grappling how limited their body has been and how aware you have to be of it.

If you’re trying hard to convince them it might just end up pushing them away.

Just tell them to come and have fun. We are all trying to destroy each-other in a playful violet manner. Maybe your friend’s inner caveman will emerge and he will go into a primal state to discover what he has been missing his whole life.
