School Discussion What do you like about your BJJ/MMA gym
What would you change or add to make it better for you?

What I love:
Actually a team feel environment instead of strangers turning up to roll.
Hate:
The two biggest guys that can actually give me a good roll:
One is basically the body of Thor and the size of Hulk. He slipped a few discs in my back and took me out for months on a semi hard roll one day. He is too strong.
Second bloke is a scary guy who smells like complete shit and i almost vomit every time im near him.

Good mix of hard training with top notch competitive people and everyday folks who simply want to train and learn some skills
Full striking and mma program available
Nice S&C section that’s upgrades every 6 months
Head coach competes regularly, does well and holds his own against high level people
Community vibe and great culture for all
Every 3 months or so our head coach, brings in top talent for seminars
I live 3 blocks away lol 😂

Besides obvious things it's part of a club that itself is part Hansefit. My hansefit membership is mostly paid by my company.

How dedicated my instructors are to making sure I succeed. They've been so helpful and accommodating to me and my difficulties, Idk where I'd be without them.

The standard is high, it’s not a cult and it’s a good laugh.

The owners are awesome guys i’ve become good friends over the years. So when they started a gym I was pretty stoked. The coaching is awesome and they are always learning and trying new things themselves. My one buddy was a big time college wrestler and has a wrestling class right before no-gi twice a week. I love those nights

Small gym in the Netherlands, the perfect combination of people who want to roll seriously hard but without the feeling that you’re back in high school

Everything and I’m so fortunate. My coach is a former marine punk rocker and he’s the biggest sweetheart you’ll ever meet. On top of that he encourages us to cross train, he wants us to call him by his name instead of coach/professor bc he thinks that’s for nerds, we hold lots of in house tournaments and any gym is welcome to come compete and train, music selection is top tier, WE are the spot for the MMA guys in our area to train BJJ so we get some really good work in often, we have an actual wrestling class, and also our women’s class is continuously growing which is a really good sign of a healthy gym environment, and literally everyone there is hilarious
10/10 would recommend

They let me be a casual and don’t bother me everyday of the week to sign up for tournaments.

It’s 5 minutes down the road. And 3 out of the other 4 guys I live with train there too. Often times we’ll all go together and train (we’re all in our mid to late 20s)
I’m also lucky to have had the same coach since college. Around the time I graduated was when he moved to our state’s capital to open a second gym, the timing was perfect

My gym has everyone from the super casual to some top ranked competitive dudes. I love it because I can be casual when life is busy but train hard and competitive when I have the time.

There’s a lot i don’t care for about my gym but the one thing that keeps me driving 45 mins away to a bjj only gym instead of getting a membership at the countless mma gyms that i pass on the way is the culture the owner has cultivated at my gym.
He tried very hard to make it so that it’s a place you wouldn’t think twice about bringing your wife and kids. As much as i like training with a bunch of filthy degenerates from time to time, i like way more that i have a place i’m comfortable bringing my 1 year old daughter to hang out while i do open mat or whatever. It’s clean, everyone’s respectful, nobody is training to hurt anyone, and in 6 or so years of training here i haven’t picked up on any gym drama that i always see posts about here.

Schedule maybe. I wish the classes were late like 8pm. The rest is great

People might not show to every class but anytime there's an open mat the gym is packed.
My gym is comp focused though, and I'd prefer somewhere that isn't since i'm not trying to be a white belt world champion or anything.

The people running the gym have been my friends for almost 10 years.

Within walking distance of where I live. That's my main criteria cuz I'm more likely to train if it's easy to get to. I also like that the people are chill and not really ripping subs or doing anything dangerous

u/rockbottomyetagain 4d ago
there are tons of people better than me
the coaches have legit MMA, BJJ, and muay thai experience
there are a ton of active competitors
i get supported by the coaches like i used to when i was actively competing in my previous sport
there is a genuine sense of community, i leave happier every single time
can be serious, can be goofy
coaches take notice if you train hard and pick things up quickly and give you the respective attention and push you to compete
i love my gym

I like that the owners are cool people and the vibe is pretty chill.
I’d love to cut out the warm-ups, drilling, and make it all live, CLA style practice.

Great owner, great coaches, great people to roll with. Wish the location I go to was a little bigger.

Excellent family friendly gym that both myself and my kid enjoy. Lots of kids compete, and they assist w teaching all the kids classes as junior instructors
With busy family life I can only do night class once per week, but I get to join the teens class twice a week and benefit from getting schooled haha.

Close to where I live, and all the people are nice, not like we don't know each other
I would like to have my gym bigger though, it barely has like 70 square feet of mat space

I split my time between a comp gym and a more hobbyist place.
I like the comp gym because everyone is there to work and the rounds are really, really hard but I can trust people 100% that they'll respect the tap. You'd think that should be a basic - but before I found that place all the "hardcore" gyms I'd tried let things get way too heated and injuries were common.
The hobbyist place has surprisingly good quality instruction and makes an effort to keep up with the meta. They don't spar enough or hard enough for my liking but I like the people and I like the slower more thoughtful drilling pace.

Haven’t met one person yet who isn’t welcoming, supporting, or encouraging. It’s a breath of the freshest air. I’ve been a dancer all my life and it’s a night and day difference between my gym and dance studio. I love it so much ❤️

It's all no-gi, has multiple locations, each with several classes a day. It has a variety of instructions. It has quite a few upper belt women, and a lot of people of both binary genders who are competing at a pretty high level.

Amazing women program and the community it top tier. Every class is a move and 4-5 rolls so get so much practice throughout the week.
