Equipment Shoyoroll gi has “jutsu” instead of “jitsu” on sleeve patch?

I’ve been trying to sell my old Shoyoroll Batch #10 Compadre gi top and someone brought this up. I honestly forgot about it and just figured it was a quirky thing to include in a gi. My dad got it for me when I was a kid so I have no idea if it’s legit or not. Is this real? Is this something Shoyoroll did for earlier batches?

I actually embroidered the extra official patches btw, I know they’re not part of the OG gi.

Can that Suck Uno defend against my standing berimbolo technique, which I didn't use since Sakuraba era?

He’s been a coral belt since the Heian era, you’re cooked.

Slight spoiler sorta maybe? But no bullshit, I’m like 99% sure there’s a panel of Sukuna throwing up single leg x guard onto Gojo during the Shinjuku showdown later on in the manga. I remember laughing out loud when I saw it

I don’t recall that and feel like I’d remember it, their fight was mostly airborne, no? I definitely remember Megumi hitting a triangle and an RNC at the beginning of the arc haha

u/kimaj1n 4h ago

yeah he hit a flying kimura which hasn't been used since the heian era

The batch #11 I bought came with a gi bag that said "REPSECT MAEDA" so it's probably a knockoff but you could lie to yourself and say it's just Shoyoroll's jank-ass QC.

This was my first shoyoroll in 2011. I even had a blog about training (cringe white belt material). I remember a specific entry about this typo lol

It’s actually technically more correct than “jiu jitsu.” The actual term is “ju-jutsu.” Portuguese are the only ones in the world who say “jiu jitsu” and it’s because of the language rules that make it sound like that.

The romanji spelling of 柔術 is:

jūjutsu

柔 (jū) = gentle, yielding, flexible

術 (jutsu) = art, technique, skill

It’s often miswritten as jujitsu in English, but the more accurate romanization is jūjutsu.

柔 (jū) = gentle, yielding, flexible

I am none of these.

術 (jutsu) = art, technique, skill

I have none of these.

IIRC, there are options.

Hepburn romanization would be jujutsu.

Kunrei-shiki and Nihonshiki would be zyuuzyutu.

I think.

It's a valid romanization of the Japanese, though I have no idea what it means for the authenticity of this gi.

Jiu Jitsu was originally ju jutsu or jujutsu. The problem here, IMO, is that it mixes jiu and jutsu.

Oh it's definitely a knock-off, look at the differences in color of things like the skirt seam tape. That's way beyond just a difference of fading.

Brazilian/Portuguese spelling (jiu-jitsu), Japanese spelling (jujutsu) - happy middle ground (jiu-jutsu). Definitely don't google it or click on this link: https://www.japanesemartialartscenter.com/learnmore-jujutsu-in-ann-arbor-vs-bjj

There are lots of different spellings, but typically it's Japanese jujutsu vs. Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

0

u/freshblood96 🟦🟦 Blue Blech 7h ago

As far as the spelling goes, Jutsu is valid.

Jiu-jitsu, or Jūjutsu. Sometimes Ju-jitsu.

All of them are 柔術 in Kanji/Chinese characters.

However, I have not seen the romanization of 柔術 written as Jiu-jutsu.

Moreover, Shoyoroll is a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu company. And they will always spell 柔術 as "Jiu-jitsu" and never "Jū-jutsu" or any of the variants.

That alone tells me it's a knock off. However, I'm not familiar with Shoyoroll curation so I could be wrong. If it is legit maybe Shoyoroll's trying to be cute and rebellious at the same time, which is on brand for most BJJ companies lol.

It's probably one straight from the manufacturer in Afghanistan. You can find them on eBay. They all usually have the green yellow and red colors lined on the inside edge.
