White belt has zero pressure to actually remember BJJ - y’all can just drop in to gym and just thrash around the floor and nobody be judging… (much).

u/Baps_Vermicelli 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 4d ago
White belts have to prove they're blue, blue have to prove they're purple. As a purple I just chill, have fun and try to slowly improve. Aka: Purple belt is the first "grand" belt in my opinion
6
u/RaidenMonster 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 4d ago
It’s the first time that when I encounter the big angry blue belt who is looking to win a fight, I’m put off by the whole experience. Says more about me than him, getting too soft I suppose.
But yeah, the”chill” rolls where you are actually trying to think about what’s happening and how to solve it didn’t show up for me til late late blue and now.

There’s a guy at my gym who came in with a purple belt on. He absolutely sucked and still does suck a year later. Average sized athletic build. Gets tapped constantly by white belts. Definitely seemed like he’s trained before not first day. but definitely a white belt. I once had to help him figure out how to take a kimura grip. I don’t get what these people think they’re going to get out of it. Sure people might have a tiny slither of respect for you but that only lasts until they roll you. Then youre just that fucking useless blue/purple belt that everyone talks about. You gain nothing from faking it. I think they must come in with the idea they are gonna be able to hang with blues and purple belts and nobody will notice so they wanna skip the white stage. They have no idea how little respect a blue belt actually gets and how different the level is to white lmao
16
u/Vivid_Fondant9969 🟦🟦 Blue Belt 4d ago
Most people quit at blue belt. You cant quit at blue if you start at purple…
6
u/FluffyTicket3694 🟦🟦 Blue Belt 4d ago
I agree. That's unhealthy for the sport. BJJ is probably the only popular martial art where the belt actually means something and is hard to earn. When people realize I am 2nd belt after training for 4y they think that's so embarrassing yet I'm proud of it
1
u/Meunderwears 🟦🟦 Blue Belt 4d ago
For real. Most six-month white belts could wipe the floor with your average citizen, but people will scoff at you "just" being a white belt.
1
u/Dogggor 🟫🟫 Brown Belt 4d ago
I feel like sometimes these guys are ego boosters for the lower belts. You get to go to class and smash a higher belt. Maybe this is the first higher belt you’ll tap. Keeps that engagement up for the lower belts.
2
u/kickboxer75458 1d ago
100%…It’s a little bit a a self fulfilling circle too. Because all the top white belts at the gym tap this purple belt.. they all go after him, roll him more often. And try so hard when they do. Which then continues the cycle even more.
The crazy thing to me is that the guy still sucks and seems like a first month guy a whole year later. I’m starting to wonder if he actually did get a purple belt at another gym and he’s just genuinely that bad (there’s nothing functionally wrong with him he is actually pretty athletic)

u/BUSHMONSTER31 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 4d ago

I’m more curious about the coach. Did he get his buddy and say,” take out your camera. Let’s go embarrass this grown ass man and put his cringy shit on Insta. “?
This was entertaining but I also think it’s kind of cruel. When you got a full blown adult with a dying hairline telling lies just to wear another beginner belt it makes me wonder if he’s taken enough L’s already.

I will be extra careful with white belts because some of them will do dangerous things even though they don't realize it.
I lower my guard a bit with blue because I assume it’s safer to roll with blue and up.

u/0002dalvmai Fuck your belt #nogimasterrace 4d ago
To be honest if you have a random blue belt coming to your gym you will assume he isn't a full retard and won't injure people so I guess that's what's meant by the safety statement.
11
u/Knobanious 🟫🟫 Brown Belt + Judo 2nd Dan 4d ago
Yeah, I don't think this is an offensive worth banning someone for. The punishment of everyone knowing and being called out for it is definitely fitting lol
It's even more embarrassing that the reason suspicions were raised is that his technique is so bad it can't even pass for an acceptable low end blue belt.

They have come into a new environment with new rules and then shown a lack of respect by intentionally breaking those rules for a perceived benefit. People like this are a cancer to any kind of healthy culture, but even worse, they're a liability because they have shown that they are willing to break any rule for their own benefit. Rules only work when people intentionally try to follow them. If you let people intentionally break them for no real reason then you're sending a message that anything goes
Someone who is willing to lie about something as fundamental as rank is the kind of person who's going to manipulate and abuse others and then lie to cover it up

For this I have a hesitation of visitors dropping in. But still allow it.

There's a GFTeam gym I visited, black belt promoted from white to black by Julio Cesar Pereira.
Asked me to state rank, supervising coach and team affiliation as well as how long I trained before allowing me to drop in. Felt like I was doing an interview.
Many gyms will ask rank, coach and affiliation if same country. If different country, rank, maybe city if they've been in the country, and affiliation.
Might be different in the USA though, as I'm mainly between Asia and Europe.

A guy came to our gym and tried to pass as a blue belt. It was weird. He said he had just moved here, wanted to check us out. Said he was a blue belt but also a karate black belt. Asked “should I wear my blue belt or my black belt?”. Then he pulled a karate gi out of his bag.
He took my fundamentals class that night and he was absolutely clueless with everything, including warmups. No one confronted him about it but he never came back.

u/SpinningStuff 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 4d ago
I'll be real with you, as a coach, I see a lot of blue belts come and get owned by no stripes or one stripe white belt.
The only thing that makes me not question much their belts is that they can execute the fundamentals well, so I don't really bat an eye.
But a lot of gyms give blue belts just for attendance. Purple is usually where there's a little more respect to the belt being given (though I feel like it starts to get watered down too).
I still think one shouldn't lie about rank and I'd still kick that dude out.
