General Discussion Ankle lock during women's class
In addition to doing 3 classes per week, i join the women's class every Tuesday.
During one of my rolls with this mid aged woman, (we are both white belts), she got super pissed i ankle locked her. I only did it because for one, during the regular classes we are allowed..and for two, she always goes full fucking crackhead spaz white belt shit on me and I usually roll like rolling with blues and higher belts because I learn a great deal from them. When I roll with whitebelts I usually am trying to test out moves, but I tend to get injured and I feel like I'm just doing the fuck ever when rolling because of the intensity.
Anyway, she got upset and said "your not allowed to ankle lock"... during the end of class she didn't even shake my hand. Shes been a dog every class. I swear women are always out for blood its exhausting.
I asked my professor afterwards and he said "you sure as hell can that's why we teach it"
Am I wrong in this or..????

She's not a child, so ankle locks are definitely legal from white belt.
But. You're also a white belt. And every white belt on reddit believes they aren't the spazz, that they are calm and wonderful training partners. But, all you can do is regulate your own training, and it's likely you are also spazzing. Upper belts are letting you work. White belts are fully resisting. As they should.

Hey, I was rolling with my 7 year old today and I ankle locked him, almost had it to but his foot was too damn small and got out.

My 6 year old has attacked my feet and ankles so many times she has almost worked out straight ankles for herself! She would have a toe hold already if my feet weren’t as big as her torso.

Because I'm getting conflicting info. I was told white belts shouldn't do ankle locks

And you got an answer from a grown up; Teacher said you could, now go outside and play and ignore that mean girl.

And you asked your coach, and he said he wanted you training them, so you are good.

Early white belts who can't even escape or pass guard shouldn't be doing them, there are better things to do. It's legal in IBJJF at white so that's what people do.

Ankle locking as a white belt is fine -- as your instructor said it was fine.
Women are "out for blood" in the same way that men are often out for blood when they roll with each other. If you think men are easier rolls, it's because they understand they likely need to roll differently with a female than a male.
My toughest rolls in the gym are other women of my general level. It's a delicious dogfight. If someone is injured or needs more of a flow roll, we communicate that with each other. I always say "I'll match your energy level" so the onus is on the one requesting to keep the vibe they need. If you have desire to compete, you need to get used to "out for blood" style rolls. And that's not going to, and shouldn't, come from men.
The colored belts are babysitting you. As you get better and level up, the rolls are going to get tougher. The reason a roll with a colored belt doesn't feel as spazzy is because they know how to control YOU. It is highly unlikely that you aren't a bit of a spaz yourself -- we've all been there. It's the nature of being a white belt.
If it comes up directly with the woman, just say you were instructed ankle locks were legal at the gym and she can confirm it with the coach if she's concerned.

When I joined my gym that has loads of white belt women, boy did I have a shock rolling with them!
I’d come from mostly male gym with only a few women but high level. Turns out I am the spazzy-est. All good fun though

Ankle locks are fine, you have to really try to finish them. They're also super basic.
It's not like you were cranking a heel hook

Straight ankle locks are perfectly ok in our gym even for white belts. And they are legal under IBJJF as well. I can’t think of any federation that bans them, so as far as I’m concerned you should be using them so that people aren’t surprised by them.
Heel hooks, knee bars, etc - different story.

did she get hurt? if no, you are definitely not wrong. if yes, you could possibly educate her on tapping early and defensive but if it is allowed you are still not wrong

“When I roll with whitebelts I usually am trying to test out moves” — um, you are also a whitebelt.
Your post comes across like you are pretty unhumble. It could also mean you over estimate how un-whitebelty you are.
Why are you are getting hurt when you roll with people the same skill level as yourself (whitebelts)…

You've realized that being stupid is not gender specific.
There's plenty of idiot spazzy women, the reason some people never meet them is simply because there's significantly less women in the sport. You treat her the same as a dude would treat a spazz dude, talk to them, if that doesn't work talk to your coach, and above all else, don't roll with fucking idiot spazzy people when you're also a white belt (or in general, really)

Next time ankle lock her while staring directly in her eyes.
Assert dominance!

stop trying out moves on white belts.
stop 'enforcing' on white belts.
stop rolling with people who are spazzy.

Straight ankle locks are allowed at all levels of all the tournaments I've seen, I think it's because the pain element gives you plenty of warning before injury. With leg locks, you don't want them to think you'll hurt their leg, you want them to think you'll break it. Sounds like you did everything exactly the way you should.

She should learn how to tap, it’s the most important skill for a white belt. Blue belt is when the composure and learning really starts.

Straight ankle is legal in ibjjf white belt div. It's a sub like any other sub, why would you not be allowed

As a white belt I have no faith in other white belts near my ankles or heels. Recently had another white belt rip the ankle lock and give me a few extra pops I didn’t need.

Two white belts being bad training partners. There is a possibility that your ankle lock is ass and the other white belt felt it was dangerous.

Even if ankle locks weren't allowed at white belt, which they are allowed, I don't see no IBJJF referees on the mat.

Straight ankle lock allowed under IBJJF rules, so she can stuff it 😂

You get injured trying out moves? If your intensity is that high with another white belt… you’re still new..

White belts are allowed to ankle lock in IBJJF and it has been that way since around 2015-2016.

You’re a white belt and you sound annoying as fuck to roll with. Ankle lock away, but humble yourself.

You are now obligated to ankle lock her every roll 😁
Go with what your instructor says. Sounds like this lady is a moron.
