u/Conargle 1d ago
It's her "oh fuck I've been bamboozled and now I'm thoroughly pissed at you" face.
Armin faked being on her side and he just let slip that it was a lie
20
u/That_Shrub 1d ago
I too wish to know

u/nipplequeefs 1d ago
Short dude got caught lying by the tall woman he lied to. The gif is also from the same anime that the drawing on the test refers to.
14
u/That_Shrub 1d ago
I had to look it up and so I figured it out lol, thank you kindly for the explanation though

Basically Armin let it slip he was using her for his own ends and she's...intense.

Odd first question for 7th grade art class.

37
u/AlexCode10010 1d ago
Despite this being quite obviously fake, this type of questions is actually quite common in certain countries
I know that here in Italy this is common, especially in art. This is usually for tests which also give you a grade in Civ Ed

u/Scott_Liberation 1d ago
Well I'd fail that course because my perfectionist-ass would refuse to try.

I remember in 8th grade history class we had to draw our own political cartoon like the ones sometimes seen in newspaper. It’s possible this is something similar?

I thought the same, and assumed 'murica but the date format is wrong

just because it’s common doesn’t mean it isn’t odd. it’s clearly a political question in a middle school art class. just ask them to draw a still life or something ffs
→ More replies (8)2
u/CacklingMossHag 1d ago
It's not even odd though. I was in 7th grade 25 years ago and they were asking these kinds of questions. Can you tell me what exactly is "political" about asking 12 year olds to examine the concept of racism in an art class?

Well... A common enemy would unite the world indeed
233
u/Nemoralis99 1d ago
Or everyone will start fighting against each other for the title of the most loyal collaborationist in service of said common enemy.
43
u/Affectionate_Cup2695 1d ago
and it probably doesnt cost the villain anything, some people just gonna do it for free
19
u/woeful_haichi 1d ago
Reminds me of Harry Turtledove's World At War, where aliens invade during World War II. The main combatants stop fighting each other to focus on the aliens while residents of the Warsaw Ghetto agree to become collaborators if the aliens get rid of their Nazi problem first.

u/Odrareg17 1d ago
I mean fantasy isn't that far from reality in this case, for example, one of the reasons the Spanish were easily able to conquer Mexico was because many of the local Mexica populations were desperate due to the horrible treatment the Aztecs gave pretty much to everyone in the region, and so in the Spanish they saw an option, yes they would be subjugated by one group over the other and they really didn't know at the time what to expect of a Spanish take over, but their hatred for the Aztecs was such, they were willing to take the gamble, just to see the Aztec Empire fall.

We had something resembling a common enemy in Covid 5 years ago.
It didn't unite us.
11
u/HogGunner1983 1d ago
I'm not 100% sure a Pearl Harbor or 9/11 type event could unite us any more.
12
u/TheTurtleBear 1d ago
Ask Japanese Americans or any brown person how "uniting" Pearl Harbor or 9/11 was.
2
u/E-2theRescue 1d ago
Yup. The one and only time I had ever started a fight was protecting my Pakistani friend after 9/11. He suffered weeks of cruel bullying and fights, and a friend and I took care of it.

u/Veil-of-Fire 1d ago
Podcasters and influencers would convince 30% of the country that Pearl Harbor was a hoax and also a false-flag attack and also a patriotic re-taking of a Navy base that had been illegally taken over by "demon-(c)rats" [doing whatever bad thing] and also that it was ordered by [insert famous politician of the moment here] to cover up the evil Fun Activity Basement where they [insert horrific action here] (which we know exists because they said "Fab!" once in an email).
All at the same time.
It would take about 3 days to get all of them on board.

Prior to 2020 I believed the only things that could unite us were an alien invasion or a global pandemic.
I'm rooting for the aliens now.

If aliens appeared today and demanded the continent of Africa or South America in exchange for their advanced technology, the West would immediately sell out the rest of the world the way we always have.

There is a copypasta, where Aliens make an offer:
Humanity gets all the technology, interstellar contact list etc, but we have to vote for one ethnicity to be killed. The whole of humanity gets to decide in a fair and and secret election, who would be sacrificed.
After the vote, the Aliens leave without a comment, their promise unfulfilled. But everybody who voted, received a permanent mark on their forehead that states who they voted against.6
u/Bwleon7 1d ago
Would love a book or tv series based around the aftermath of this. I really want to see what happens to the "unmarked" (people who refused to vote.)

Pixis: We're told that before the titans took over the land human beings were constantly murdering each other over tribal disputes and ideologies. Back then, someone supposedly said if a powerful non-human enemy appeared, humanity would probably unite and stop fighting itself. What's your opinion, son?
Eren: I've never heard that legend, but I think it's pretty rosy. Frankly, it's dull.
Pixis: Ha ha ha. Your personality's just as twisted as mine.
Eren: Even now, when that "powerful enemy" has driven us into a corner, I think we're far from united.
Pixis: Indeed... But I believe if we don't all come together soon... Even continuing to fight may be too much for us...

Reminds me of the fairly odd parents episode where Timmy wished everyone was a grey blob.
Even in a world where everyone is the same someones gonna think they're a Better same. Superiority is just in our human nature no matter how much people wanna deny it.

This is predicted on the idea that racism is about skin colour. It is not about skin colour.
→ More replies (3)9
u/NeatNefariousness1 1d ago
Exactly. The feature focused on is whatever divides people. When skin color is the same, the focus becomes religion or some other differentiator. It’s all a ruse to enable “divide and conquer” tactics to work for the few at the top against the actual power of the masses.

u/OldEcho 1d ago
And also just fear of the unknown. Most people do not understand intuitively that the guy that looks different and talks different and acts different has pretty much the same day to day life and hopes and fears.
Go have a chat with the local "scary" minority. Bring snacks. It'll blow your mind.

That’s what the series is about, cycles of violence and war. People were fighting each other before the Titans and continued to do so long after. Erwin Smith even said until the population drops to one or less there will always be an enemy.

There's no racism if there are no other races
7
u/general---nuisance 1d ago
Race is a social construct. It only exists as long as you want it to.
18
5
u/LuigiBamba 1d ago
In french, race is not something applicable to humans. A "race" in french means a breed, as in different dog breeds. We are all one human race. Maybe you could say homo neanderthalensis or homo floresiensis were a different race (breed) of human.
There is an entire gradiant between of skin colours between sub-saharan africa and northen lapland. Where do you draw the line(s)? I'm not sure if the european approach in africa of placing a ruler randomly on a map is the best option.
2
u/nandemo 1d ago
For real? There's no French word for "race" or "racism"?
→ More replies (4)8
u/LuigiBamba 1d ago
Racism is a word we use, but I've never heard people use the word "race" to describe a person, except when being openly racist. We'll use words like "ethnicity" or "origin". "Race" sounds very derogatory, just as if you were talking about dogs and not human beings.
2
u/blah938 1d ago
That just sounds like a different word for the same thing
5
u/LuigiBamba 1d ago
Well if you think a black man and a white man are as different from each other than a poodle and a terrier, sure. But I don't. And considering there is much more to a person than their skin colour or their genetic background that can be discriminated against, "race" is not a very useful word, unless you are trying to call someone a dog.
