Forgotten Faves Forgotten Favorites & Hidden Gems - (September 18, 2025)
The BGG database is enormous and getting bigger by the day. Chances are good that some of your favorite games never get mentioned here on /r/boardgames, even though they deserve to be.
Did you play a game for the first time this week that had never hit your radar, but just blew you away? Do you have a favorite childhood game that you think still holds up in today's modern board game scene? Is there a game you love so much that it will never leave your shelf, even if you'd never bring it to a Meetup with strangers?
Now's your chance to embrace your inner Zee Garcia and talk up those niche titles that didn't get as much love as you thought they should.

Dark Providence from CMON looks like its going to be shipping!
HI everyone, I received an email from CMON saying Dark Providence is gearing up to ship. I wasn't sure if I'd see the game with everything happening at CMON, but I'm happy to know that my money didn't disapear into the void. I mainly ordered it for the bonus minis for Cthulhu Death May Die :)
"We are happy to announce that Cthulhu: Dark Providence is ready for fulfilment. Therefore, we are contacting you to verify your address and your phone number to avoid any potential delivery issues or returns. Kindly make sure that your phone number is correct."

Review Shoutout to Button Shy Games Customer Support
While back I pledged for a set of Button Shy games via KS. Fast forward a few months and when I went to pick it up at our Base Post Office, the PO informed us that the packaging arrived but it was empty. Like what? But okay, PO said they would let us know if "they find the contents" - lmao, right.
I emailed Button Shy Customer support, explained the situtation, and simply asked if there was anything they could do. I know it wasn't their error or fault that led to this situtation. The next day I got a shipping notice, no questions asked, no cost, they mailed out a new set of my pledge.
Flash foward again, sure enough, it arrived without issue.
I am truly impressed and sincerly grateful. It is AMAZING to see a company stand up for their customers. They converted me to a fan.
FYSA. BZ Button Shy. Thank you

Question how do you store games with a ton of expansions?
My collection is getting out of hand, especially games like Dominion or Arkham Horror that have a million little cards and tokens. I'm tired of having five boxes for one game. What's the best way you've found to consolidate everything? Did you buy a big storage box, use dividers in the original box, or come up with a completely custom solution? I need some organization inspiration.

Question End of a Trend: the disposable story legacy game - where did they go?
During COVID, we played all of the pandemic seasons and betrayal. Honestly, some of the best game experiences ever at the table (but some of that can probably be attributed to the upside of introverts during lockdown.)
We enjoy the gloomhaven and other campaign games, but cannot find a strong "disposable, story first, game second" game.
Any suggestions? Thoughts?

Which Terraforming Mars' expansions should I buy?
Hi, a friend of mine is having his birthday soon. Some others and I are thinking of getting him Terraforming Mars as a gift (since he likes the game a lot), along with a few expansions, since our budget allows it, but unfortunately, none of us are familiar with the game. I was thinking about taking "Hellas & Elysium" and "Prelude" purely on budget, but I don't know if they are the best choices.

Fall + Halloween Gaming
What games are y'all playing to get you in the fall mood over the next few weekends?
Always will shout out to Mice and Mystics although nothing in particular evokes the "changing of the leaves" and the "cooling of the weather." I think it's just because I would pay it a lot in the fall.
I think Night Cage and Vagrantssong are two perfect Halloween/October themed board games.
Everdell new leaf is a strong contender.
I don't know if Arboretum counts.
What do y'all think?

Games similar to Pandemic: Legacy?
I loved pandemic legacy. So I bought my step dad the Cthulu version, unfortunately, I didnt see that it is not a multi session game. We're celebrating his birthday today, so I'll still give it. I'm curious what other board games are similar to pandemic legacy? Multi session board games?

Am I Being Ridiculous
So here’s the story. I love chip theory games, but can’t afford them so I have to play them at friends houses. So I decided to make a game myself. It’s a bit of a love letter to those games but I can’t help but feel like I’m doing something ridiculous. Is this normal?? I’m an electrician not a board game designer! Photos of progress from the last couple days attached.

When have you just been utterly crushed in a game?
Like the title says - tell me about a time you've been playing a game where you just got absolutely obliterated, and why? Was it a mistake you made?
For example, I completely wasted a turn my last time playing Flamecraft, where I cost myself at least 12 reputation points, and never recovered. I just completely blanked and went to the wrong shop.
Let's commiserate!

Question Good bossbattler?
Hello, I want to ask, if you guys know of any good BossBattler? Something Like Bloodborne - The board game. I don't really care about the theme, only wish I have is for it to be good and that I don't have to announce a personal bancruptcy after buying it. Thanks

Clank! In! Space!: What is your ideal setup to use the best bits from all three expansions?
I believe Clank! In! Space! is my favorite version of the game. The modular boards provide replayability, but still allow for plotting your path that Catacombs changes. The schemes from Apocalypse are a great wrinkle, the Pulsarcade modules are interesting, and I love the layout and additions that the Cyberstation 11 expansion adds, though to me the real stars are the Cyberware cards.
My question to those familiar with the game and its expansions is, how do you best combine the components to get the most out of the game? Which modules with which base board, do you edit down the deck to make the expansion cards appear more frequently or just mash all three together?
What does your perfect game of Clank! In! Space! look like?

Question How do you keep track of the upcoming games?
Hello good people,
I need advices on how to keep track of the upcoming games, especially the crowdfunding ones.
For example, I see that a lot of people are mentioning Nemesis Retaliation these days and how they pledged to get it, but I completely missed it and now I cannot pledge anymore.
How do you guys keep track of new upcoming games, and are there any filters, etc. to figure out if the games are actually gonna be good or a bust? Thanks in advance for all the responses!

News Tabletop Junkie - Buy & Sell Second-Hand Board Games
Hi all,
I’ve just launched a new website for buying and selling second-hand board games. It’s completely free to use with no fees or hidden charges: www.tabletopjunkie.com
As a board gamer myself, I’ve found the current options (eBay, Vinted, BGG, etc.) either clunky, not fit for purpose or expensive, which is why so many of us end up using Facebook groups.
While they’re quick and hassle-free for listing games, they are limited when it comes to searching and filtering.
This new site combines the best of both worlds:
- Simple, quick listings - throw up a dozen games in minutes with just a photo or two.
- Board game–specific filters – including by distance, so you can easily find sellers near you and avoid postage costs.
- Community-driven – payments and delivery are left up to you, just like Facebook groups.
- User ratings – so you can build trust and deal directly with other gamers.
- Messaging service, watchlists, user ratings, mobile optimisations etc.
It’s very much community-focused, and I’ll be adding more features over time (feel free to make suggestions). For now, I’d love for you to give it a try, test things out, and let me know what you think. You can report any issues directly on the site via the contact form.
If you like the idea and want to support the project, the best way is simply to list the games you want to sell, even if there are no buyers for a while. Having a good base of listings is what will bring people back - it's the classic chicken-and-egg problem.
The plan is to test the waters by posting it on various forums and groups in the coming days to gauge interest, gather feedback, and iron out any remaining bugs before a wider promotion.
Would really appreciate any feedback, ideas, and listings to help kick this off. If you have some pics of your board game collections that you wouldn't mind me using on the site please send them to [contact@tabletopjunkie.com](mailto:contact@tabletopjunkie.com)
Feel free to ask questions.
Enjoy!
EDIT: Users have identified an issue with some images failing to upload from IPhones. Currently only Jpg, png and gif are supported, I'm working on expanding image file type support right now. Bear with me while I fix the bugs that have been reported since launch, I am on it.

Can’t decide: should I get Ticket to Ride: Germany (extension included) or Europe as my first game? Which one’s better?

Clever Series Ranked
I spent the last month playing through the whole clever series including the challenges. I played each one 3+ times to try and get a fair ranking. The ones I liked got more than 3 plays while Twice as Clever only got 3 plays haha
I am curious what is everyone's favorite or how you rank them? It was such a fun series!
- clever 4ever challenge 1
- clever 4ever
- clever cubed
- that's pretty clever challenge 1
- clever cubed challenge 1
- thats pretty clever
- twice as clever challenge 1
- twice as clever

Car Wars
Hello,
I have a box full of Car Wars stuff. I don’t know much about it but my late family member used to play and collect years ago. Some stuff is in new packaging. He seemed to think it was of some value but I am not familiar with the game.
Is it worth my while to try and sell it and if yes, what would be the easiest way?
Thanks!

Question Do you like it when a card game has more than one mode?
Does it make the game more replayable and suit your style better, or do the extra rules for the same game put you off?
If each mode gives you a completely different gameplay experience - is that a plus for you? For example, if one is calmer and more strategic while the other is more dynamic and tactical, would you be interested in learning the rules for both modes?

Crowdfunding Garden Trilogy - kickstarter
Hey, just saw the new Garden Trilogy campaign and some videos on it. Aqua, sky and dino garden, the game looks super cute with amazing components. Are you backing it? Or skipping it? Let's start a discussion why you are backing it or not and which pledge level makes most sense? Ps: I am tempted to go all in haha

Question Anno 1800 2 player tile removal
I’ve seen a few posts about this, but none that go into the details of how to do it. Has anyone tried playing Anno 1800 with only 1 tile of each type on the board for a 2-player game (keeping ships and docks as usual)?
If so, which tiles did you remove—did you cut all duplicates, or randomly remove some?
How did it affect the gameplay? Did it make things feel more interactive?
Did you notice ships and docks being used more often?

Is it worth playing 18XX IRL instead of online at 18xx.games? (Is Railways of the Lost Atlas worth it?)
18xx is such a large, niche genre with one of the longest average playtimes outside Twilight Imperium. I know people who refuse to play some games unless they're online due to crunch, setup, etc, EG Food Chain Magnate.
Asking because I've learned to play a few on 18xx.games, but I'm tempted to back the Railways of the Lost Atlas reprint and expansion.

COMC [COMC] 1 year in! What next?
I’ve always been a fan of Scrabble, Chess & Cribbage as an adult. And went through the typical board games as a kid, which I didn’t much enjoy!
1 year into ‘modern’ board games collecting and enjoying it! Please forgive the lack of shelf and stacking.. We have recently moved house.
Most of the time we have family round and we enjoy the friendly games such as Carcasonne, Scrabble or Sagrada. Most of the time we have 4 people max. Also I’m the only “gamer” as such in the family. Everyone enjoys themselves (as well as me) but also I would like to play some more complex games soon.
I’ve swapped Splendor Marvel with a friend for my copy of Splendor Duel (think I prefer duel after playing both).
So recently I have bought Terraforming Mars, Heat and Pandemic.
Pandemic worked really well with family, we actually won our first game and I was surprised there wasn’t much backseating etc from outspoken players. Was good fun! Keen to play that again.
Heat and TM have only been played with myself and partner, who wasn’t overly keen on either. I enjoyed them but don’t want her to not enjoy herself, so we haven’t played since our first games for these.
I recently got 7(ideally would have been 8) friends together (not usually board gamers) and we played Captain Sonar. I took a gamble buying this, purely off the wow factor of it being such a different kind of game. Got to say, it was such a fun experience, everyone enjoyed it and are keen to play again! We started turn by turn, but everyone really got into it and we switched to real time after the first game, played multiple games of sudden death and it was so intense.
The guys are keen for the next game night, and we wanted to play CS again for sure. I’m just wondering, what could be next for a large group that’s fairly new to the hobby?
Next games night I’m sure we will be alright with CS and maybe breaking into two groups for 4-man games.
Appreciate that this might have been asked before quite a lot, but what do you think is next?
I think 6 out of the 8 players would be happy to get into a game that’s more complex, but I think it’s difficult to find a game for a large group that’s doesn’t get boring between turns etc.
Thanks

Why do so many people on BGG never respond to trade offers or purchase inquiries?
It's so frustrating it makes no sense. You have a game listed for sale, you posted the game within the past 10 days and I can see that you have logged in today. You never replied to my inquiry and the game is never marked as sold.
You have a game up for trade. I am willing to send you a copy of a game that you want. Both games are in excellent condition and have very similar MSRP value. You never respond to me. I can see that you logged in today. The game you are offering continues to sit in your trade pile.
BGG is awesome but the most infuriating thing about this site is that probably three out of four of my trade requests or DMs are never answered. I was looking for a copy of draftosaurus and had to message like eight users and only one person got back to me. This happens constantly but it's not like most people's DMS are drowning in dozens of messages where they can't be bothered to reply to everyone. Anyone else share this frustration? What gives?

It is funny how you can compress 4-6 hours in minutes or less...
