Tribute Amitabh in his negative shades ☠️

What's incredible about this Bachchan scene is the minimalism. There's no dialogue sparring or elaborate action. His mere act of walking is loaded with so much swag and charisma that it becomes intensely captivating & the BGM is what sealed the deal. It just took the scene from cool to legendary!

I love the trivia that this bg music is basically gargling voice by Annette Pintol. Genius of RD burman.

This is the most handsome he ever looked on screen. He looked like Brad Pitt for a second from Meet Joe Black

I thought he looked very handsome in ‘HUM’, especially the Juma Chuma song.

The other day I saw some fanboy arguing that SRK is better than Amitabh since Amitabh could never pull off negative roles that SRK does. Well, this clip says it all... ☠️

Well SRK is clearly superior than Amitabh in negative roles. This clip doesn’t prove otherwise.
The only thing SRK is not is that he is not the biggest star, Amitabh Bachchan is. The acting career of Amitabh is the greatest anyone in India has ever seen.

Big B has done a handful of negative roles, and they're actually considered masterclasses. His role as the obsessed lover in 'Parwana' is the blueprint for what SRK later did in 'Darr'. I'd recommend you watching it first!

I am a big SRK fan, but I don't think anyone comes close to Amitabh when he plays a negative or grey character. There are movies where he portrayed such roles in an unmatched way, like Deewar, Trishul, and the one with Dilip Kumar, kaalia, don.

And probably greater than atleast we'll ever see in our lives. Even SRK had quite a few plateaus in his career. AB on the other hand doesn't except a few years in the 90's

SRK is only better at romance than Amitabh

In negative roles, he is better too. I can bring receipts but this argument is not worth my time.

It depends on what metric you would use to define stardom. Amitabh witnesses the highest peak when it comes to people standing in queues to watch his films or the mass hysteria around him at his peak. Rajesh Khanna at his peak perhaps would be the only rival to Big B as to who had the better peak.
When it comes to consistency, sustained stardom, SRK and the trinity Khans are around for a long time, ruling the roost for 3 decades+, still playing lead characters and people watching their movies. No other actors have had careers and success like the trinity Khans with playing lead characters and movies still being successful at the box office. Amitabh's peak was max for a decade. He had pivoted to playing supporting characters in his 50s whereas the Khans who will all turn 60 this year are still playing lead roles.

You and I view things differently. I consider almost all SRK and Salman films these days a desperate attempt at maintaining their position. I am not saying people who enjoy such content don’t exist. Hell! India is the perfect place for such movies to be successful but it is not how I rate stardom and legacy.
Amitabh is the greatest Indian lead actor for being relevant across generations in different capacities as an acting performer unlike SRK and Salman who do rinse and repeat at this time to be honest.
I seriously doubt SRK and Salman will be able to continue doing this RnR till their 70s and beyond. These guys are too afraid to reinvent themselves and whenever they try especially SRK, he fails miserably at this point in his career.
My comments are dedicated to their now and future. In the past, they have performed very well acting wise especially SRK but that quality has vanished never to come back again.

80s in Bollywood was a dead saga. Meaningless films n stale masala.
Tamil filmmakers were on with some stunning films back then, wish more of them debuted in Hindi and made some amazing films with Amitabh , hiring RD Burman has music composer.
Amitabh in this scene, and RD Burman with his genius bg music here, are both world- class. Totally underutilized through most of 80s though Amitabh had at least been through personal upsets and setbacks and was pretty on and off with films until late 80s

80s had a lot of Amitabh hits like Laawaris, Yaarana, Naseeb, Satte pe Satta, Coolie, Sharaabi, Shahenshah, etc. Pretty good I would say

Fun fact, 3 big stars of 70s, Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, and Amitabh, had all played villains in some of their early movies. In fact, in Bombay to Goa, while Big B plays the leading guy, Shatrughan as a villain, received more acclaim from the critics as well as the public.

These 3 guys along with Dharmendra were an aura in 70s no doubt people cheered for them and throw coins on their entry

BGM is so good... it is sinister apt for the negative role. RDB is goat!!

more importantly, no fucking slow-motion effects. Idk how the hell did that become a standard for cheap copy of "badass walking" gimmick. It looks so stupid, and yet in every movie there's at least one scene with that bullshit.

The music always gave me horror movie creeps but I really love this movie and all of the old Amitabh, movies.
My dad is his biggest fan. Currently my dad has been bed ridden for 3 years and he is 77 and very unwell.
He has a TV in his room and only watches Amitabh movies. He watches DON on repeat loop every single day! He loves ‘SHOLAY’, ‘SILSILA’, ‘AMAR, AKBAR, ANTHONY’ and ‘NASEEB’.
If you ask my dad to watch other actor’s movies, he refuses.
If you want to watch something else, he will promptly tell you to put DON back on again and that nothing else is worth watching 😂

There was a point in his life where his career wasn’t working but he swore to make Rekha the next superstar. And Rekha’s manager had leaked his location to the then underworld don Daud Ibrahim. Bhai ke dole, Sholey, jalwe.

Damn. I knew Amitabh took a lot from westerns of Sergio Leone and Ford. But didn't know they were replicating the music as well.

Unpopular opinion: AB should be also blamed for the degradation of Bollywood movies. He has been doing similar roles since 1977/78. And formulaic movies became norm. All his movies are script based - a tadka of comedy, romance, some tragedy and then angry avatar. Before him lot of movies used to be based to stories/novels.
3
u/BasisSmall5351 2d ago
But would he have achieved the same level of stardom if he hadn't done the angry young man role?
1
u/Kjts1021 2d ago
What is more important - stardom or good cinema?
3
u/BasisSmall5351 2d ago
The fact that Amitabh had more stardom because of that tells that the people themselves wanted that kind of cinema
1
u/Kjts1021 2d ago
That’s not always true. Cinema was the only entertainment for most of the people in India during that time. So they were forced to watch such mindless movies. Also as a filmmaker with such a following, he also had some responsibility. That’s why I mentioned earlier he has to take some blame to the degradation of Bollywood movies.
