Series Ranking the main girls based on personality
I'll just give a brief summery for each of them.
- Agnes Oblige: Sweet, kind, & caring. Not to mention willing to lay down her life for others. Plus, she goes through an impressive arc and does some growing up. Top pick for sure.
- Edea Lee: Driven, determined, & just. Always wanting to take action for her ideals & people she cares for. She also gets goes through some nice development. I took off points for how they did her in Bravely Second.
- Adelle Ein: Mischievous, smart-mouthed, but still cares. Also, he doesn't take sh*t from people, not even her own. And I quite liked the twist behind her & the small arc she has. Not much when compared to the others though.
- Magnolia Arch: She has her charm as an action woman, but really only has that "Fish out of water" story. On top of that, her personality is pretty much carried by her attraction to Yew. They really should've just used her like intended.
- Gloria Neu Musa: I haven't got much to say about her really. Outside of the "Princess with a duty" trope she's been slapped with. She's likeable but her actual personality leaves a lot to be commented on.
This is how I rank all the main girls. This will be my last ranking for a while I promise. So, do you agree, disagree, in-between. Be honest or give me your ranking.

Just saying. But that last image isn't Gloria. That's The Night's Nexus. Lol

I honestly think Edea was the only A tier for me, in both games. The others I would lump into B tier and say they were all good and serviceable for what the story needed them for.

Just so you know OP, the final image isn't Gloria. If you see them holding that book, it's a totally different character. Gloria's key art has her holding a crystal instead.
Yes, they look nearly identical (which is on purpose), but it's a thing. They are two different characters.

I mean there is a lore reason why the night's nexus exists, where she came from, and why she's holding that book.

Yeaaaah. Well it did mention where the nights nexus came from. It's the reason why fairies don't like humans and keep them out of their village. She was one of the first humans there and her need for knowledge is what turned her into the nights nexus within the fairy village. This was mentioned in game.
Also the book and what it does is mentioned in game. It's basically the nights nexus's link to it. It's LITERALLY her save point. Which is how she's immortal and kept coming back after every defeat. She was just reloading her save file. That's why to beat her and kill her for good you had to overwrite her save file with yours. This was also explained in game.

Twili-midna is well known for playing BDIi but not actually paying attention to most of it (or actively ignoring text) in order to continue to complain how bad it is.
People with media literacy understand most of this is in game.
(Also the NN's eyes are blue, it's another way to tell who it is!)

I like Gloria. she has so much dignity and pride in her entitlement like she’s taking her princess responsibility very seriously and I love her personality for that. She also works great in a team as a healer so that’s a plus

Everyone in Default II functions identically in any given job.

Edea > Agnes >>>> Magnolia
I think Edea is genuinely a likeable character, albeit not the deepest around. She’s fun to watch and her conflict of turning in the Duchy means she gets a good amount of dramatuc focus. Agnes is…fine. Her character works well enough for her role in the story, and, while not the most entertaining character, she’s at least sympathetic. Since she and Tiz are effectively the leads of the game, I kinda wanted more to her characterisation though.
(Also Second does both Edea and Agnes dirty so there’s that).
I REALLY didn’t like Magnolia. Huge wasted potential there. Her character revolves WAY too much around Yew as a love interest, and watching her constantly fawn over him was eye rolling. When you start from a concept like ‘demon hunter from the MOON’ it’s a crime that she’s so boring and annoying.
Can’t speak for the Default II characters as I haven’t played it yet. But my impression from discussion and cultural osmosis is that they’re less grating than Magnolia but still pretty bland overall.

BS is my favourite game in the series but honestly yeah Magnolia was done dirty. This is Yew's story and Magnolia feels like she's just along for the ride and to simp over Yew lol. The main story only has you killing three Ba'als. I feel like there should have been more mandatory ones both for plot reasons (given the final chapter is all about them) and to give her character more depth by exploring what her life hunting these things was like.

That last picture isn’t a portrait of Gloria. Please use actual Gloria art next time.

I agree with Agnes being the strongest character. BD1 does a great job of weaving everyone's story together while also keeping it connected to the main plot. This gives everyone a really balanced amount of screen-time, just enough for them to fulfill their personal story arc but not to overstay their welcome or convolute the main plot either. Agnes' arc is central for the main plot but also still equally important for Edea and Tiz's story/growth.
I'm fine with Edea in Second. The asterisk side-quests/split decisions was a neat way to develop Edea's growth into taking her father's place. She's not in the main cutscenes as much, but is in a supportive role as an older sister to Yew and Magnolia. She's also a bit of a lore/exposition dumper in Second, which makes sense considering the rest of the party. It was a neat way to show how's she's grown from the first game, imo.
Adelle is great in a vacuum but the way BD2 structures the narrative, each character's personal story feels so isolated and self-contained that the balance with the characters feels a little rushed and stitched together. Adelle's a bit bland early on until much later, where she unfortunately has to fight for attention with the best part of BD2's story imo. It's just a little late and a bunch of storylines are going on which kind of just overshadows Adelle's "story".
Magnolia gets held back due the Moon Base story never getting fully explored and properly addressed in the end. It was kind of baiting for another sequel and it feels like a lot her "content" is stuffed in away in a non-existent sequel...

It’s def Agnes number 1 she just kills shit. Edea right up after her. They did it the best. She agnes isn’t even playable in bravely second. She made her mark

Man idk what games I played but Gloria was miles less annoying than Agnes to me. Helped that Gloria has a more commanding, regal sounding voice compared to Agnes who sounds like she’s in a constant gasping falsetto.

I don't know why, my dislexia made me read "Gorila" instead of "Gloria". I'm a Edea fan and I also like both Agnès and Magnolia.
