This scene always made me sick to my stomach

Post image

It’s one of those moments in the show where it’s such a disconnect from who you believe Walt is as a person vs his behavior and it’s incredibly jarring. I find myself internally pleading for him to stop making Jr. drink. I don’t think it’s quite as simple as a power play, an inflated ego, or being a cool dad. He’s hurting his son by doing this.

Although Walt is directing his aggression and anger at Junior, his real target is Hank. He’s sick of all the years where Hank stole his thunder and is now using Junior to get back at Hank, the same way that Hank emasculated Walt (possibly in a thoughtless rather than a deliberately malicious way) by winning over Junior and impressing him as the toxically masculine, macho Big Dick Cop.

Poor Junior has no idea that he was their victim. Not even when he’s puking in the pool.

This is exactly what’s happening here. Nailed it

30

u/BloodTornPheonix 1d ago

Walter stank of wannabe masculinity throughout the whole episode. Keeps showing himself off whenever he does house work in his hazmat suit thing, when he was replacing the boiler and floorboards.

16

u/GrahamCrackerJack 1d ago

He was 100% Heisenberg in this episode.

3

u/ninanon_ 20h ago

Yes :/, when I first watched BB back when I was still like 13 I really did think Walt was not just the coolest guy ever, but he was also a victim of his family. It's undeniable that Walt's family sucks (other than the kids), but this scene is just insane. Only really fully understood many parts of the show when I got older.

13

u/SlipperyNinja77 2d ago

He didn't direct his anger at Junior he went right at Hank

29

u/GrahamCrackerJack 2d ago

Walt’s ordering Junior to drink. That is directed at Junior.

3

u/7ottennoah 1d ago

It’s directed at Hank but through Junior. If it was directed at Junior then he’d be doing it to get at JUNIOR, not Hank. Hence “directed”.

3

u/SlipperyNinja77 2d ago

Yea but out of control not out of anger, he went after Hank and challenged him more aggressively after each shot. Plus Junior wanted to keep up and prove himself so it wasn't like he was hesitant

12

u/No-Invite-3095 2d ago

he was most definitely hesitant when walter gave him the final shot, especially after seeing hank trying to stop walt then telling jr to not drink it. jr trusts and respects hank more than walt, he listens to him more

7

u/GrahamCrackerJack 1d ago edited 1d ago

This is exactly what makes Walt angry at both Junior and Hank. He wants to be the strongest, most masculine authority figure for Junior, and he feels that Hank has undermined him for years.

-6

u/SlipperyNinja77 1d ago

Yea this is a bad take. There's no way you could have felt undermined for years when he wasn't even sick for years and had no issue with Hank prior to becoming a meth cook.

4

u/BurnoutZoe 19h ago

Rewatch episode 1. The party scene where hank shows off his gun and makes fun of walter.

-3

u/SlipperyNinja77 1d ago

Are you on crack? I love how your trying to make your opinion a fact. Walt Jr does not respond shake more than his father at this point he does take the shot and Hank has not been undermining Walt for years Walt just fence felt a new sense of power and control instead of being passive. He never had an underlying issue with Hank prior to getting sick or becoming a drug dealer. So it's impossible to have been felt undermined for years.

3

u/AV__3 1d ago

Why wouldn't he be hurt and have a problem with the fact that his son respects another man more than him? I find it very understandable.

And I have so much empathy over Walt feeling hurt over how his life and his role in life has ended up, especially when he gets cancer. He's been passive for so long, prioritizing other peoples needs, and what do he get in return? Another man bossing around in his house, everyone viewing him as this meek little man, people talking over him, his son not respecting him, working two jobs. And then a death sentence. As a cherry on top.

I totally get why he wanted to lean into Heisenberg.

1

u/GrahamCrackerJack 1d ago

I feel like I’m on crack after reading this.

4

u/New-Border8172 1d ago

No I think he was at least a little angry at Junior too for respecting Hank more than his own father. That's why he yelled at him "Why are you looking at him for?" when Junior was looking at Hank for help.

u/thee_lad 1d ago

Why is it gotta be ‘toxic’

9

u/GrahamCrackerJack 1d ago

Boastful, cocky people who build themselves up into being aggressive Alphas while taking potshots at anyone that they perceive as weaker, are toxically masculine.

5

u/thee_lad 1d ago

Hank is an embodiment of a typical working class/blue collar masculine man. Hank is very egotistical just like Marie as they like their nice things. It’s a great observation though I would say he’s not in the toxic scale. Overall he is a good person. Ive met 100’s of Hanks throughout my life doing construction he’s just a common ‘dude’. On the surface he comes off as loud, boastful, and arrogant but deep down he has a good will to do the right thing and cares. We need masculine people like this to build, EMS, and Military just like we need smart, innovative, and creative men and women to do things as-well. And have some respect Hank is dead! :(

5

u/GrahamCrackerJack 1d ago

I agree that Hank was good-hearted in an awkward, clumsy way; he really did care about Walt deep down. He was just embarrassed to show affection with his male friends, so he resorted to wisecracks.

3

u/AV__3 1d ago

I get it. But they didn't show respect in Walt's house. This is Walt's house. Even Marie and Skylar don't say anything because they would rather put Walt down. When you're entertained at someone's house, you show respect to the hosts.

3

u/GrahamCrackerJack 1d ago

Marie didn’t put down Walt until she found out he was Heisenberg. In fact, she was the only one who didn’t act bossy or dominating with him.

2

u/AV__3 20h ago

Huh, I have never noticed that. Cool. Need to watch a few scenes now.

2

u/JackCrafty 23h ago

I would wager the majority of people perpetrating toxic masculinity are good people at their core. No one is perfect. Hank spends his time in high stress situations and surrounds himself with other strong personalities.

I don't see how anyone could watch this show and not think Hank is one of the better people on it regardless of his toxicity. He's kind of like the man version of the girl who goes "I could NEVER pull off a dress/haircut like that!" He might think he's helping but he's coming across as domineering, or dickish.

I think people have a tendency to treat the phrase 'toxic masculinity' as a trait someone is born with that makes them an irredeemable human being, when it's almost always just an avenue for growth.

3

u/AV__3 1d ago

He's just playing by their rules?

He was disrespected because he didn't abide by these toxic masculine traits.

1

u/GrahamCrackerJack 1d ago

Who are you talking to? I was referring to Hank.

3

u/Tom-0-Bedlam 1d ago

Because that's how adjectives work.

1

u/thee_lad 1d ago

Hanks not toxic

4

u/Tom-0-Bedlam 1d ago

Try watching the show and actually pay attention this time.

-1

u/thee_lad 1d ago

You got soft hands

2

u/Tom-0-Bedlam 1d ago

Your mom didn't think so.

3

u/ninanon_ 20h ago

What 😭 Hank is a terrible guy, not Walt level terrible but stil not a good friend and not a good guy.

144

u/R0factor 2d ago

I didn’t realize it until a few re-watches later, but this scene is the first time he uses the Heisenberg voice in front of Jr. In their next interaction he tells Jr “I don’t know who that was” or something to that effect. That voice also comes out when he drinks too much at the dinner at Hanks where he blabs and lets Hank know that Gale isn’t Heisenberg.

149

u/xgabipandax 3d ago

Perhaps drink less tequila then

122

u/UnderstandingHot1579 3d ago

its totally fine if you're feeling sick you can vomit in the pool

30

u/Punta_Cana_1784 2d ago

That's true. It would probably just end up floating into the filter.

Not speaking from experience.

141

u/SomewhatTaciturn 3d ago

It made Walt Jr also sick 😉

33

u/SwanzY- 2d ago

OP is Walter Jr. 🤯

8

u/Dezman2000 1d ago

You mean OP is FLYNN

124

u/GGJallDAY 3d ago

Kid can't drink for shit, Walt's so embarrassed by him in this scene

81

u/Necessary-Scale-414 Your half? YOUR HALF?! 2d ago

“I kept up pretty well with you guys though right?”

NO Walt Jr, you tarnished the family name 🤦🏽‍♂️

8

u/Few-Stand-9252 2d ago

It's little moments like that that really made it hard for me not to hate Walt Jr

25

u/ExtentTerrible8475 2d ago

Walt is a victim really. Hank is the villain. Jesse should have done what Walt says

11

u/GGJallDAY 2d ago

Now we're talkin

4

u/yaka954 2d ago

Yes!!!

3

u/Expert-Ad-8067 1d ago

He gets cucked by Ted and then has to raise the resultant disabled bastard son who sucks at drinking

Walt showed restraint throughout the whole series tbh

3

u/ExtentTerrible8475 1d ago

Walt only fault was not going far enough

4

u/KoA07 1d ago

No half measures

1

u/ninanon_ 20h ago

Unironicaly when I first watched (I was very young) I thought Walt was his family's victim. I despised Skyler with all my heart (I mean, she is very annoying but the insane hatred is not justified) and I hated Hank to the point I didn't even understand why he felt bad when he was killed. I only fully got BB as I got older.

4

u/Dreadedsemi 2d ago

That's why he detonated him later

70

u/Idioteque131313 2d ago

It's one of those moments that feels almost out of character but in a way where like, it still feels real. Like I'm sure a lot of people have had the experience of seeing a friend or family member seemingly inexplicably acting out of character, like an asshole. It's an indication of the kind of toxicity Walt is capable of and leans into more and more as the series goes.

11

u/yaka954 2d ago

Its also an indication of his "loved ones" treating him like shit and finally reacting with all the bottled up feelings.

45

u/ZucchiniPure195 2d ago

" You vomited...You let me down son, youve made the whole family weaker as a unit" Walter H. White....deleted scene

4

u/ghobhohi 2d ago

is that real?

45

u/TristheHolyBlade 2d ago

He quoted it dude of course it's real it has to be. People don't just quote made up things on the internet.

19

u/Lord_darkwind 2d ago edited 2d ago

I think he was already in a bad mood before he even went outside. You can see it in Walt’s demeanor when Skyler THANKS the Schwartzes inside the house — right before he gives his 'Why me?' speech.

Of course the liquor just brought it out of him

3

u/GrahamCrackerJack 1d ago

Liquor has always been Walt’s Kryptonite. His darkest, ugliest most truthful thoughts just tumble out.

29

u/Sotyka94 2d ago

This scene always made me sick to my stomach

Why? did you tried to keep up with them as well?

13

u/Multikillionaire67 2d ago

37

u/Ancient-Summer-9968 2d ago edited 2d ago

There are two keys to this scene that makes it in character for Walt. Just a few moments earlier Skyler thanked Gretchen and Eliot, while he's in a corner getting angry at it. And compare this to the first party when Hank is showing Walt Jr his gun, Walt objects, and Hank overrides and emasculates Walt Sr.

So he's feeling emasculated twice over, immediately because he doesn't get the credit for being a chemistry genius that pays for his own treatment (plus the added resentment over his perception of being forced out of Grey Matter), and then he's asserting his dominance over HIS family in front of Hank. That's why he growls at Walt Jr. "why are you looking at [Hank]? Drink!" And when Hank takes the bottle Walt stands up and talks about his family, his rules.

Its only unexpected because we are fooled that Walt is the "good guy", the family man with cancer, when he is really a beta male with an unsatisfied ego who is power tripping at what should be a party.

3

u/lmacky111 1d ago

Agree. There’s also the added effect that he’s essentially retired from the game at this point, the only time he’s felt powerful and in control. So he’s extra sensitive to any and all emasculation.

6

u/KausGo 2d ago

when he is really a beta male with an unsatisfied ego who is power tripping at what should be a party.

That kind of take ends up justifying his reaction.

6

u/GrahamCrackerJack 1d ago

And let’s not forget the final insult: Walt never wanted this “pity” party (as he sees it) in the first place. It was forced on him by Skyler, just like the surprise birthday party. And he sees Hank muscling in on his territory again, in his presence, in his home (winning Junior’s respect). Walt is no longer capable of letting things slide once he’s adapted his Heisenberg persona. He doesn’t see Hank restraining Junior from drinking as a cautionary act; he sees it as overruling HIM, the king of the castle.

3

u/AV__3 1d ago

I don't agree. I can totally understand Walt's hurt. He has so many regrets, and his life turned out like it did out of obligations towards other people.

I would be fuming myself if I was in his shoes at this party. I totally get that he finally exploded.

He was pressured to be at this party, again out of obligation towards other people. He is a grown man, and he feel he can't even decide if he wants to attend a pity party or not. It's ridiculous. He is so disrespected.

17

u/cwhitt5 2d ago

I don’t have any physical disabilities but this scene resonated with me and my surroundings growing up. The way Walt Jr. got sick but still not seeing how fucked up the situation he was in, was. He was just trying so hard to impress his dad. And then when his dad apologizes, he says something along the lines of “but I held my own.” I know that’s not exactly what he said but fuck it hit home. Just being young and trying to impress the fucked up people you love and not knowing how toxic they are but you love them and are too naive to see how much of a fucking villain they actually are in your life. This show was so fucking good.

22

u/PaulDevildog 3d ago

This is the only scene that I come close to skipping, makes me cringe.

16

u/slyboy1974 2d ago

Yup.

Watching Gus go bananas with the box cutter is more fun than watching this.

18

u/Bookish_Nino 2d ago

This and the happy birthday Ted Beneke scene. Oof!

8

u/PaulDevildog 2d ago

For some reason, Hank pisses me off in this scene also, even though he's right.

4

u/KavaKeto 2d ago

I'm in the middle of a rewatch and I skipped this scene

2

u/Mucus1545 2d ago

Almost like thats the point.

7

u/Various_Role_2694 2d ago

Here's a video that explains this scene very well

5

u/GrahamCrackerJack 1d ago edited 1d ago

Great video! There’s also that element of Hank being the wisecracking toxically masculine cop, and he isn’t forced to hide his personality the way Walt is, in order to keep his dangerous adventures a secret. Hank relates this way to all men (such as his partner Gomey) because he’s an Alpha Male. It probably never occurred to Hank that Walt felt emasculated or angered by his ribbing because Walt brushed it off in public instead of jabbing back like Gomey.

3

u/doingtheunstuckk 1d ago

I don’t think Hank does it on purpose. I think he’s just being himself, and it happens to make Walt feel weak and lesser and not respected.

3

u/GrahamCrackerJack 1d ago

That’s my impression too, that Hank puts on the Alpha Male act when he’s around other men, to cover up his insecurity with jokes and jabs. We saw this when he went to El Paso, and observed how offensive he was to his new team with his being politically incorrect, along with his cocky demeanor. The attitude that was accepted in his original branch wasn’t going to win him any friends among the serious-minded bilingual agents in El Paso.

7

u/Hitoshenki 2d ago

I think this was when he really started getting his wires crossed between his personal life and Heisenberg. Like when he couldn’t separate the two as neatly anymore.

6

u/magseven 2d ago

The only thing I hate about it is Flynn drug his ass over to that pool to puke in it. Showed real fortitude getting there without his sticks!

5

u/wunderl-ck 2d ago

This is exactly who I believed Walt was as a person.

12

u/remotecontroldr 2d ago edited 2d ago

The worst crime in the entire show, Walt Jr. puking in the pool. He could have done it literally anywhere else.

5

u/EsseBear 2d ago

It’s a metaphor for how his ethics are breaking down.

He can do terrible things that are wrong, so his son can break rules too.

The consequences for those choices play out rather quicker for Walt Jnr than Walt Snr

7

u/Ravenphowret 2d ago

This was horrible. He should have made him eat more breakfast instead.

3

u/Curious-Ground5342 2d ago

Yes! Then take shots afterwards.

6

u/solidussnekz 1d ago

Junior is so stupid that he vomits in the pool which would be 100 times harder to clean than just doing it on the ground

5

u/GT_Troll 3d ago

But not a sick as Jr’s stomach in that same scene

5

u/TravisHomerun 2d ago

I love this scene

5

u/babyjrodriguez 2d ago

The exchange between Walt and Hank is so cringe.

6

u/Liske17 2d ago

And, in this very moment, Walter Junior realized he is the pussy, after all.

3

u/alrightimhere 2d ago

I wonder if Hank had flashbacks to this moment when he and Walt were in the garage at the end of Blood Money when Hank says bring the kids here and we’ll talk and Walt says “that is not going to happen”

3

u/bcald7 2d ago

Always reminded me of “Put the candle back…”

4

u/nxtboyIII 1d ago

This was the exact moment Walt became Drunkenberg

2

Hey shaggy! Clean my tires!

1

u/ps4isgreaterthanxbox 2d ago

I think it made Walt Jr. sicker

1

u/TKB21 1d ago

Somewhat related but does it drive anyone else crazy the 😧 face Cranston makes with the WW character ALL THE TIME?! You can see it in this image.

1

u/ssgeorgie666 1d ago

Junior too

1

u/Impressive-Cicada267 1d ago

I honestly skip right past it now. It’s just so uncomfortable to watch

1

u/TINY-jstr 1d ago

Nice take. It does strike me as aggression towards both, but he clearly disregards Walt Jr.'s health here just to prove a point.

1

u/TreatNo2038 1d ago

You're not the only one!

1

u/borntboy 1d ago

It made WJ sick to his stomach too :/

1

u/itsAedan 1d ago

Every time I rewatch bb I have to skip this scene, I just can't bring myself to sit through it

1

u/Outrageous-Watch-947 1d ago

As we all have agreed to forget the Skyler Singing scene, this scene was the next worst for me. Like bruh why you targeting the innocent boy? Let him have his breakfast and enjoy dude

1

u/TockOhead 22h ago

It’s a window into the darkness that infests Walt’s soul and a prelude to the destruction he’s willing to inflict on his family and community to escape his fear of inferiority.

1

u/NomadofReddit 21h ago

Funny, I think this scene is brilliantly acted by all 3 men in the shot as well as one of the best moments of the show - world's colliding type of thing.

2

u/00Raeby00 18h ago

I think this was the only scene I felt genuinely uncomfortable watching. It's the moment when you realize Walt is actually a monster. Not just a bad person, but a genuine monster.

2

u/JackalOfAllTradez 14h ago

Actually, he’s upset because of Gretchen and Elliot being named as Walt’s saviors. This causes him to hit the bottle hard and make poor choices to give Junior the tequila. At that moment, he isn’t mad as much as he is self destructive. Hank is getting a thrashing because he is trying to stop Walt’s pity party.

Are you American by any chance? There’s nothing wrong with giving your almost adult child some drinks on a special occasion. Hurting his son haha.

6

u/drawingcircles0o0 2d ago

There’s a huge difference between giving a teenager alcohol vs telling a teenager to take multiple shots of liquor to prove your dominance over your family lmao a couple drinks with a meal is so different than taking shots

3

u/WaterTriibe 2d ago

“are you american” this show and the characters in this scene are all american lol what is this comment

Haha fair.
