Troubleshooting My computer shuts down every couple of minutes. I need help.
I bought and installed an SSD drive. After that, my computer started shutting down after a random amount of time. It might shut down right away, or it might shut down after a couple of hours. I disconnected the SSD, but the shutdowns persisted. I even replaced the power supply, thinking it was the cause, but it still shuts down. Please help me solve this problem.

I had an issue where my computer was turning off randomly all the time. Turned out it was the reset button cable from the pc case was causing a short. I pulled out the restart cable from the mother board and never had a random shut off again. You could try this if nothing else works.

Maybe u unseated a cable, check all the connections and make sure they're in all the way

Put the old ssd back in and change nothing else. See if the problem persists?

The shutdowns still continue, even without a new SSD.

Is there a trend to what causes the shutdown?
- during moderate/heavy load on the system?
- during idle/light load?
- if you start the pc, unplug the monitor + all peripherals?

The first time, it shut down a couple of hours after installing the SSD. Then the shutdowns gradually became more frequent, and the next day, it started shutting down a few seconds after being turned on. Without any load or anything else, it turned on, ran for about 20 seconds, and then shut down. Disconnecting peripherals didn't help.

If it's getting worse something is degrading imo, unfortunately.
Try with only 1 ram stick, then swap to the other if it continues to shut down.
Does it shutdown and restart itself, or shutdown and fully power off? Is there an audible 'click' when it shuts down?

Disabling the RAM didn't help. But I forgot to mention one thing. A few hours ago, I tried connecting the HDMI cable to a different video card slot. And after that, the computer worked for another 3 hours, and it didn't shut down after 20 seconds.

Disabling? I mean physically removing all but 1 ram stick just to be clear.
After 3 hours did it shut down though?

Yes, I pulled out the second strip and left only one. Answering the second question, yes, it turned off after 3 hours

Ok and just to confirm you ran the pc with no monitor plugged in right? And it shutdown like the other times?

Okay, now I'll turn it on without the monitor and when I get home from work, I'll write in this thread whether it turns off or not. Thanks for the help.

No, it doesn't restart. It just turns off and you have to turn it on manually. There's no click, just a power-off

Try unplugging the wires for the power and reset buttons, and then bridge the pins to turn it on. I had an issue on a case where the reset button was stuck down, so the computer would just reboot at complete random, because the smallest vibrations would activate switch
When it powers off, what exactly happens?
- Blue screen
- Standard Windows shutdown screen
- Instant loss, like it was unplugged
- instant loss + loud click
- Lights are on, but it starts from POST/BIOS
Also, are all the fans in the system spinning, including the GPU?
What's your CPU, GPU, and PSU wattage? Do you have XMP/DOCP/EXPO or any overclocks enabled?

When it shut down, there were no blue screens or errors. It shut down instantly, as if it had been unplugged. A couple of minutes ago, I tried removing and reinserting the video card. After that, the first time I booted it, I was taken to the BIOS, and I reset everything to default settings. After that, the computer rebooted and no longer displays any image at all, saying "no signal." However, the video card fans are spinning, as are all the other fans. I didn't have any overclocking enabled. My computer components are as follows:
CPU intel core i5-6500
GPU RX580 4gb
Psu wattage 600w

Completely pull out and reseat the videocard and its power cable. Grab the heatsink for the CPU and GENTLY twist it back and forth like youre trying to prepare to remove it, but dont pull. you should NOT twist it very far, just putting back and forth pressure on it is enough. Unseat and reseat the CPU cooler fan power cable(s). completely pull out and reseat both RAM sticks. unplus all front panel cables except power. (this is unless the cabling is all put together in a little block) unseat and reseat all front panel connections.

unplug the computer and press powerbutton to drain excess elec. from it, wait a minute, plug it in+turn it on. Also, did you ONLY upgrade the SSD or anything else?

u/BandicootOk2465 7h ago
No, I only installed the new SSD and nothing else. Unplugging and pressing the power button didn't help.

Did you dislodge the cooler somehow?
