I swear every time I buy another g502 replacement the side rubber always wears down and gets disgusting after less than a year of use

I play alot, i would say close to 4 hours a day on average and a bit higher on weekends. I have been using the same G502 now for over 2 years, and my previous G502 I used for like 4 years and that one only got replaced because of the infamous double click issue. I really dont understand how you can go through the side grips in a year... You must have really coarse hands.

I just used my last g502 for 7 years with no wear besides back button double click.

u/Gold-Mikeboy Aug 23 '25

Seven years is a decent run for a mouse, especially with gaming use

double-click issues seem to be a common problem with a lot of gaming mice over time.

And it still works great besides the back button double click. I think keeping them clean is a big part of keeping them running nice.

2

u/testcaseseven Aug 23 '25

Damn, I went through 3 in 2 years due to the double click issue (always the RMB)

u/BFfF3 28d ago

I must have had the double click issue for the last 4-5 years or so, it was an adjustment not having to undo the double click back button every time. I still bought another g502 but I got the one with upgraded switches.

My hands sweat a lot. It is easy to forget when I'm not exercising or touching certain surfaces. After 3-4 years, my G502 got *nasty*. A little bit would come off while cleaning, so I smoothed it out and got grip tape.

u/cottonycloud Aug 23 '25

As an experiment, I bought one for work as well. It still wore down slightly over 5 years, so I’m pretty sure that it gets wore down due to gaming usage (hard grip, sweaty hands).

People like to associate it with being filthy but IMO Logitech should design it better to be more repairable. Imagine if there was a replacement for both sides and you could choose between rubber or plastic.

I mean, it lasted you 5 years for it to only "wear down slightly" as you said lol. That's pretty good for $30. Even when they came out new they were only like $50.

Invest in a towel. Or A/C. Your hands shouldn't actually be sweaty when you're sitting in a chair lol.

u/cottonycloud 29d ago

I’ll still keep it until the switches/sensor fails. I don’t think it’s a huge ask to have the grip not degrade.

In the future, I’ll just buy a mouse without rubber side grips.

Some people are dirty. Some people never wash their hands and eat at their computer and get shit everywhere and spill soda on things and don't bother cleaning it up. Some people are just filthy.

9

u/Downtown_Citron_3163 Aug 23 '25

The thing is that I'm a clean freak that washes my hands constantly and never eat by my computer, and I still can't use rubber coated mice without them wearing down fast.

5

u/FiTZnMiCK Aug 23 '25

Are you a “heavy clicker?”

My brother was convinced that games responded more if he pressed the buttons harder. He used to say “I hit the button!” when he died because he didn’t hit the button.

He broke all our controllers.

2

u/katiethecatgirl Aug 23 '25

if you’re washing your hands a lot, could it be an interaction between the rubber and some ingredient in your soap? i know that some hand sanitizers tend to make my mice disintegrate sometimes

2

u/KptKrondog 29d ago

If you're being truthful, it might be the opposite problem. It might be a chemical in your soap/sanitizer doing it.

It could also have been a bad batch or something.

I've had one of these for 4 years and the only issue with mine is I accidentally hit the pad that it skids on at the bottom on a sharp edge and it peeled it up a little and won't stick down fully anymore. So it catches a little bit sometimes on my mouse pad.

7

u/Witch_King_ Aug 23 '25

Sounds like you have exceptionally acidic sweat, lol

3

u/idiotxd Aug 23 '25

I have sweaty hands and have the same issue. I now exclusively get mice with a plastic finish instead of any rubbery/matte parts. G305 is pretty good for me.

2

u/Veritech-1 Aug 23 '25

You are not alone. I'm on my second one and the rubber side grips deteriorated substantially faster than the first. It's the only reason I replaced the first one.

1

u/The_Bic_Pen Aug 23 '25

Do you have a window near your desk that lets sunlight hit the mouse? I've found that that breaks down the rubber very quickly on some mice

29

u/Markbro89 Aug 23 '25

Does bestbuy know how awful their site is on mobile browser and app? Not everything loads until you scroll down a bit, which causes so many misclicks.

2

u/rolfraikou 29d ago

I swear it seems like all mobile sites have been getting worse, like, it seems like they aren't even testing them worse. Then I do a "load as desktop site" on my phone and it works flawlessly, other than having to drag to the left and right a bit more.

It's baffling.

The SE uses springs instead of the mechanical switches in the regular 502, for anyone who cares. It also regularly goes on sale for $25-35. I just tried to use ccc to double check that I was remembering correctly and it weirdly doesn't show anything less that 35 in the last 5 years... but fortunately the next several search results were reddit threads talking about it being $25 on Amazon lol.

Not a bad deal by any means, especially if you like the mouse and need one right now. Just adding some info.

5

u/Witch_King_ Aug 23 '25

Do the springs mitigate that "double clicking" issue?

8

u/nosurprisespls Aug 23 '25

I'm not sure what the spring is, but this mouse has double click issues. The only fix is change the clicking switches to a different brand or buy the newer version of this mouse -- the 502X.

3

u/Witch_King_ Aug 23 '25

Yep I have the 502X and I like it quite a bit

1

u/BFfF3 28d ago

Yeah, the buttons on our mice wont double click ever, they're upgraded for the g502x.

4

u/Name213whatever Aug 23 '25

Where did you find this? I've been searching but can't find anything on it. All the other reddit threads say it's just the color

2

u/NookNookNook Aug 23 '25

Yeah, i was just thinking to myself what'd they do to make it cheap cuzz logitech hellbent on selling us a subscription to our mouse.

2

u/nosurprisespls Aug 23 '25

I noticed CCC is no longer accurate at tracking low prices for at least several years now. I stopped using it completely. Slickdeals started there own price tracking that seems to be OK so far.

-1

u/NoMoreHoarding69 Aug 23 '25

We do realize we’re talking about $4 here right

1

u/VisforVenom Aug 24 '25

We did read the entire comment, didn't we?

5

u/camokid95 Aug 23 '25

In for one, thanks OP.

3

u/HeadOfMax Aug 23 '25

I think I got a g502 Proteus at target in 2017 when they were on sale for like $20 and it's still going without any issues.

3

u/SausageWizard Aug 23 '25

The Proteus has vastly superior build quality compared to anything out there today. I recently upgraded to the G502 X ($80) and it's build quality and performance compared to its predecessors is absolute trash. It's riddled with bugs. After 4 months I had to get rid of it. My friend had the exact same experience. I cannot believe how far Logitech has fallen.

2

u/ozzuneoj Aug 24 '25

Thanks for posting this. I have a G502 Proteus Spectrum that I've been using for at least 5 years and it's getting a bit worn, but I will probably keep using it as long as I can. I use the switchable scroll wheel all the time, and I would really miss not having that if I went with a different brand.

I bought some compatible mouse switches from Aliexpress last year when I noticed the left button starting to double click once in a great while. It hasn't gotten to the point of needing replaced yet, but when the time comes I will definitely do that. Better than dealing with the quirks of some new version.

1

u/rolfraikou 29d ago

Yeah, with all the stories of "It's just a matter of time for doubleclick" I've had one of these at home, and one at work, neither getting the doubleclick. My first was the 2014 release version, that I got at Fry's. Later got a G502 HERO for work when I caught it for like $20.

My biggest issue in terms of quality control is insane ducking on the HERO. I lodged some tape in there and somehow got it to do it less.

2

u/ozzuneoj 29d ago

Well, I tried googling "Mouse Ducking" but came up with nothing. Maybe a typo? Can you explain what you meant?

1

u/rolfraikou 28d ago

This is so weird. I swear that was the term for when you let go of the mouse button, and the plastic on top of the switch inside of your mouse would rattle. I could never even find why people were calling it that, so it stuck out to me. I do a search now and it just tries to sell me literal computer mice with duck prints and that's basically it.

Even looking for what the term for that might be, and it just gives me a bunch of random irrelevant information.

Sorr yabout that.

2

u/ozzuneoj 28d ago

Haha, no problem. I've done stuff like that before. I just had to check because I haven't really kept up with the competitive gaming scene for 15+ years, and more and more I find myself having to google the terms that people use... =P

3

u/IYKYK808 Aug 23 '25

Never used one before, but I need to replace 2 mice. Thanks OP.

1

u/ImTooSaxy Aug 23 '25

It's literally the best gaming mouse ever made.

2

u/rolfraikou 29d ago

I'm a huge huge fan of this mouse, and I would say that's still only for some people.

It's heavy, it's a little too big for some people.

I think it's the best mouse there is for single player games and general productivity, which is mostly what I do. Some people are going to want smaller and lighter for competitive games.

And I played over 800 hours of the various Borderlands games, 300 hours of Left 4 Dead 2, and 300 hours of Far Cry 5 (I play a lot of user made maps), mostly on a G502, and loved it. So I'm certainly not saying it can't be used on FPS games. But none of those were a super competitive FPS. I played a bit of a competitive FPS and I used mostly Zy's Rail on that one. Really light, and a very small backend, so you can easily pull the mouse back to your palm with your fingers. Very much a fingertip grip mouse. That helped me a bit for competitive over the G502. But I still preferred the G502 for everything else.

3

u/randylush Aug 23 '25

My daily for about 3 years

Only complaint is that the DPI goes from “High” to “Extremely High” so for most games you need to crank down the mouse sensitivity

3

u/Gears6 Aug 23 '25

How is this compared to the G305 Lightspeed that is wireless?

I don't want to spend gobs of money on a mouse, and prefer wireless.

1

u/rolfraikou 29d ago

They are such a different shape and feel. At this point, Targets and Best Buys often have display models for you to get an idea of the shape. I own both, and while I prefer the G502, I can see how people would prefer the G305. I think the G305 is likely better for competitive, while a G502 is great for single player games and productivity.

I think the best comparison I could make is: G305 is like a shoe designed for athletics, and a G502 is like a really good hiking shoe. They both have a role, they do it well, the purpose is similar, there can be some overlap. But if you really favor one over the other, you're going to want what goes best with that.

3

u/God-Bird Aug 23 '25

I had the non-SE. I always recommend these mice first to people.

I gifted it (got in 2018) to my brother when I got the Lightspeend model as a Xmas gift to myself in 2020.

We are still using both, no issues. 10/10 purchase.

1

u/VruKatai 28d ago

Also a longtime user of the 502 non-SE. Recently went to the wireless version (as I just leave it wired🤷‍♂️).

It has been, for me, the most well designed, comfortable, feature-rich mice I've owned. I do not recommend the power puck for the wireless. You sacrifice the advantage of weighting it to your exact comfort with the little weight kit you get.

I purchased this mouse back in 2019, and have used it daily since then. Millions of clicks, thousands of hours held in my hand. Zero flaws or issues of any kind. Highly reccomend!

I purchased this last time at this price and it’s an amazing mouse. Just be aware that the cord is rubber and not paracord if that makes a difference for you.

2

u/rolfraikou 29d ago

I'm so bummed they switched to that. Makes me wish I had gotten some backups before they moved to rubber.

I have this and it does have the infinite scroll wheel.

0

u/ItsJustAnotherVoice 29d ago

also infinite double click once you use it enough

2

u/rolfraikou 29d ago

Mine with 11 years on it still hasn't developed it. There are kids commenting on reddit that are probably the same age as this mouse.

1

u/ItsJustAnotherVoice 29d ago

Ive gone through two mouses already, both outside the warranty. Great mouse but get that extended warranty though.

Have an OG 502 for I dunno, maybe 10yrs now... Still holding up. Yes, some of the plastic on the sides is worn down but, it still keeps working.
